IN A WORD: MAYBE

IN A NUTSHELL:

WHAT TO EXPECT: WW2 themed turn-based wargame. 'Beer and pretzel' play style. Attritional combat model. Chess-like battles. GUI obfuscated game rules/mechanics. Incomplete scenario implementation. Active dev. Single-player only. ACHIEVEMENTS: NONE. STATUS: WORK IN PROGRESS. SHOULD BE IN EARLY ACCESS. WHEN TO BUY: HOLD OFF. WAIT FOR IT TO MATURE.
More info below.... https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2390599395
THE LOWDOWN:
Frontline: World War II (F:WW2) is the fourth title in a series of Unity-made turn-based wargames with a 'beer and pretzel' approach and style. This title focuses on the Allies' efforts across the breadth of the entire war. It embraces the same design methodology, look and feel to be found in a mobile game. Content currently consists of six mini-campaigns of 1-6 missions and a number of scenarios. These start with a small force that can be added to through the purchase of additional units with a limited number of resource points. Achieving optional objectives provides the opportunity for additional resources. Though there are over two hundred playable and non-playable units to choose from, only certain allied units are available depending on the scenario and historical availability. Gameplay consists of turns using WEGOUGO. Units are moved across tiny hex-tiled maps. An attritional model is used for combat between a dozen or so units on each side. Chess-like tactical battles take place between individual combatants. Each class has their own strengths, tactical abilities and designated roles. Unit abilities and tactical factors can be used to augment the damage dished to opponents. Up to two special tactical abilities which should be earned by levelling seems broken. Manoeuvring units into position or attacking enemies in certain ways will trigger tactical factors which lead to efficient enemy elimination. Graphically F:WW2 contains gorgeous unit models akin to table-top soldiers of old. Terrain tiles are colourful. The soundtrack seem to be a mix of stock tracks, interspaced with excerpts of period radio broadcasts. No game manual or real tutorial existed, while badly needed tool-tips to explain some of the game's mechanics were mostly only seen in the game's tutorial. Make sure you hunt for this before commencing the campaign. Prestige points seemed to be a score rather than linked to purchasing units in mission. Resource points are used instead but are not consistently carried from one mission to the next. Shortcomings were encountered during play including: GUI issues, unsaved and states. These were reported to the dev., who rolled out some fixes. Some of these were verified. Campaign missions act as stand-alone scenarios, the only difference being there is no starting force. A day 1 dlc and the newly added Midway scenario were present. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2390920991
THE GOOD:
+ 23x campaign missions across all theatres of war. + 200+ unique units (not all playable). + 30x unit abilities useable before attacks. + 21x combat actions and factors are modelled to provide benefits to units able to effect them. + Well-drawn graphics. Especially the units. + Well scaled gameplay and missions. + All DLC's are free.
THE BAD:
- 20x neglected scenarios. - Overly small maps. - No core force. - Some game rule obfuscation. No manual. Tool-tips are rare and happen in game. - Stock/asset based soundtrack. At least one game I know uses some of the tracks. - Restrictive movement. Cannot move through allied units. - Cannot sell/swap out purchased units. Do not a mistake make. - BUGS: Save states, minor GUI, text error. - Should be in Early Access. Needs more testing and balancing. - Can only play the allies side. - Simple but restrictive GUI. Lacking in tool-tips. - Minimal differences between units from different nations. - Only save on exit. Hoping it never becomes corrupted. - Accidental use of clouds for fog of war.
AND THE REST:
* Mobile port look, feel and play style. * Fair quality campaign. Some mission require additional balancing. * 3x difficulties. * XP levels up class type, not specific units. * Abstracted supply / reinforcement model. * Decent battle sounds and radio excerpts add to the ambience. * Basic AI. Mutual support. Target focus. * Currently being updated. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2390595162
ANALYSIS:
F:WW2 proved to be a decent game with plenty to attract fans of simple, tactical wargames. A good design gave way to a few aspects that I cannot fathom. Despite the obvious mobile roots the game plays quite well but there are incomplete features and a distinct lack of polish, that are holding back a recommendation. In my opinion this should actually be in Early Access. My initial misgivings regarding the attritional combat model faded away with the enjoyment of unleashing my units in combat. Turns were fast but battles tended to last longer than I initially expected due to the higher strength points of units. This despite the petite nature of maps and small forces. The range of available units, their abilities and the tactical combat factors brought a welcome layer of complexity to strategy. The implementation of snipers and their sniping ability was a personal highlight of mine, followed by a naval bombardment ability. These were tremendous fun to use. While the methods of calling airstrikes had a nice balance to it. The abstracted supply model and limited reinforcement was simplistic but did not take away from the streamlined gameplay expected from a mobile game. This ensemble of factors provided a fair amount of tactical nuance making the combat model the game's main strength. Being a very colourful game the graphics especially the combat models proved an attractive reminder of days spent table-top wargaming with toy soldiers. Even the map tiles were great to look at. A 360d rotating map or even just the ability to flip it would have been a bonus. The soundtrack was another matter. Most of the tracks used seemed to be stock items. Perhaps a single original well-made track would have served the game better. The radio excepts and battle sounds however added to the ambience. While this may sound positive a number of concerns unfortunately came to the fore. The bugs and incomplete features were my biggest issues. Problems with basic buttons, saving and text errors gave F:WW2 an unfinished feel. Cloud cover could have been a wonderful fog of war mechanic but sadly its presence turned out to be a happy accident, one that proved detrimental in seeing on screen info. Scenarios also seemed neglected. Always active unit abilities hinted that the unit levelling system was broken. The lack of a core force and unlinked nature of the campaign had me scratching my head. Why were starting resources inconsistent between missions? Why was prestige not used as currency to buy/repair units? Perhaps I did not grasp the decision-making behind these.
VERDICT:
That said F:WW2 is on the way to being the TBT that it promised to be. In my view it will take some more effort from the developer to complete this game to the level I would be happy to recommend. When that day happens this review will change to reflect this. For now unless you are happy to play a game that has some flaws and should be in Early Access I would hold off and keep an eye on future updates. A low budget, round based WWII hexfield strategy game. Graphical presentation is neat, with much love for detail; altough a bit overcrowded. Maps are small to medium sized. Mechanics are simple but appropriate. The gameplay is quite catching to addictive with enough campaign missions to keep you busy for several hours to days. Alltogether not as complex as the AAA-titles of the genre (e.g. PC or PC2), but a good game for the price. Recommended for fans of hexfield strategy games.
This is a 6/10 for me. Its an interesting iteration of a tabletop game, especially for such a small shop. And the art and radio excerpts are really cool. But the game play has some issues like not being able to move one unit through another, which makes the maps really cramped. And there really is no campaign to speak of, just a series of unlinked scenarios played in sequence. What you do in one scenario seemingly has no bearing on the next.
This game is fun. I play it every day. In my view, its about picking apart the defenses of a dug in enemy. Much of the allies job in WW2 was to do exactly that. If you just throw your troops at the enemy emplacements they will get butchered. The game has a lot of replay value if you enjoy revisiting missions to refine your tactics and try to bring all your guys home again. The maps are the right size for me. Any bigger and they would take too long to finish.
Hex-based wargame. Combat is decent. Gameplay interesting. Decent enough.
If turned based strategy and/or tabletop gaming is your thing, it's worth a look.
easy to play squad level deployment.
I got this game for free, but I had already purchased: Frontline The Great Patriotic War and loved that game. Frontline: World War 2 is the newest game from a very small game developer. The Frontline series of games are great pick up and play World War 2 games that everyone can enjoy. I play on the lowest difficulty so that I can plan my moves but not get crushed if I screw up badly. Turn up the difficulty if you want a serious challenge, but I'm happy just having fun at my own level. I think I could be a General but really I'm not that good. I like to have fun and this game, and the rest of the Frontline games, are really fun. Great graphics, awesome music and superb sound FX round out an easy to play, easy to learn game. You hear actual World War 2 Radio chatter in the background as you play and that adds a lot of atmosphere. There's is a campaign and plenty of scenarios to keep you busy plus you can save anytime you want. If you are looking for a fun, easy to learn World War 2 game, then try Frontline World War 2 or any of the other Frontline games you'll be glad you did. Fantastic.
