While there is a lot to like about this game it is utterly ridiculous that I can have three stacks of units next to an enemy stack and all three miss two turns in a row. There needs to be adjustment in hit attempts for distance and some improvement in hit chances for consecutive attacks on the same target. The current set up makes tactics meaningless.
yes seems free time, has made me understand how many games i own and have not reviewed, which leads me to another,.... another one which steam says i've played a lot less than i have on the site version, it has Arnhem in it, so i had to have it, play it, re play it, then re play it again, again and again, as that's my fav battle in all time, so far i've owned and played every version on well every format it's ever been on, bought consoles and machines just to play the game on different format hoping one day it would get near to a classic i played on a 48k spectrum version way back in the day. this was close and really enjoyed it so yes because it does this and many other great battles in history i'd recommend it
I absolutely love this game. It has a feel like squad leader yet slightly different. Most scenarios are pretty quick so it's not a huge investment in time to play a quick game. Multiplayer works fine. And the occasional tournament is a blast. The art work on the boards and counters is excellent, and there are quite a few boards to use with the editor. I have all the DLC's, but would love to see North Africa and the Italians. My only gripe is they haven't added the Japanese to the quick mission builder.
Turns just take wayyyyyyy too long to cycle through, enemy shooting, next enemy shooting, next enemy shooting etc etc. spend more time waiting for the animations to cycle than planning your moves.
Fun, light as a feather, and dicey, dicey, dicey. Worth picking up on sale if you want some entertainment. Just set your expectations properly. This game is a blast if you want a tactical, turned-based, board game-style that is easy to learn and play, doesn't bother with details, and if don't mind absurd random number generation. It's neither ASL nor Combat Mission, and that's fine. It's not meant to be those things. You can pick it up and play quickly with little rules overhead. The UI mostly makes sense. The graphics are cool. The AI makes smart decisions. And you can do a fun and challenging game in, I don't know, 15-25 minutes. But holy mother of probability. The "dice" rolls are something to behold. The game allows you to chose between different die roll levels from in favor of you the player to that of the AI. Something in the middle is the default setting...which in no sense means even. Averaging 25 rolls of the die for both me and the AI, and the AI had an advantage of on average 3.5 pips. Fine, I get it. The AI needs help. But don't call it neutral. Changing the die roll bias helps move it to your favor, but then things get truly wild. Overall, the game is way to dicey, to be taken too seriously, with wild swings one way or the other happening all over the place. Combined that with the weird settings for random number generation and the lack of cruncy detail, and you get something more akin to a craps game than, say, the poker of ASL/Combat Mission. There's definitely a place for it in a wargamer's library. But just don't expect too much. ****EDITED**** Update to the dice rolling comment: on neutral/no bias settings, through my most recent 100 2D6 rolls, the AI is averaging a 6.0 (which what a no bias setting would imply), while my rolls are averaging between and 8 and 9 with a lot of variation. Again, not the worst thing in the world as a cheap fix to an AI system, and you can always adjust the bias. But it's most definitely not neutral. A fun game, just be very aware of what you're getting into: a full on dice chucker but with loaded dice.
This is a major improvement over Lock & Load. The turn structure is much more practical, the controls are intuitive, and the rules of the game are correctly built into the fabric of the game so there is no hunting through the manual to figure out how to pop smoke or use a flamethrower. It does what a computer wargame is supposed to do: handle the rules, while the player focuses on tactical choices, such as trying to get men across a street without being decimated. One improvement that is needed, however, is L&L's support weapon existence outside of its parent squad, so support weapons can be recovered from lost squads, or captured.
Game needs a redisgn of movement an combat phases, use the order of battle ways to play and it will be a success. Until then don't buy this game it's a nightmare!
ok so most of my experience of this game is from youtube vids. but i mainly bought it bc of the dev engagement, and simplicity. im new to tabletops and this is perfect!
Read the manual and was looking forward to playing only to discover that in Windows 11 the mouse is invisible.
