The story of Twin Sector takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where the remains of mankind have been put to artificial sleep in cryogenic chambers deep under the contaminated surface of earth — until the planet becomes habitable again. You as the player must take the role of Ashley Simms, the protagonist of Twin Sector.

Twin Sector is a hard game to thumbs down because the premise of "Portal but with the Gravity Gun from Half-Life 2 instead of a Portal Gun" is good and there are some puzzles that use it well, but it's just too clunky to wholeheartedly recommend. This was really the first of the Portal clones and after the original came out I was desperate for anything with a similar style. Where Twin Sector really falls down is that the timings needed to pull off a solution successfully are often very precise and hand be somewhat haphazard depending on certain random elements. It is incredibly frustrating to know the solution to a puzzle, but have to try it again and again because your timing was just a millisecond off. The physics for pickup up and throwing objects are really not good and fighting the turrets you come across is mostly a game of "throw stuff at it over and over again until it breaks". And that's a shame because near the end the puzzles got a bit better and as things got closer to the ending I did find myself legitimately getting invested in the story and characters despite largely being a more serious near beat-for-beat retelling of Portal. The atmosphere and aesthetics are interesting and the game does have an intriguing vibe. It's almost a hidden gem and when it works you think "ah, this is kinda neat" but it's just not consistent or smooth enough to make the frustration worth it. If we were still in the late 2000's with only Portal for our first-person physics puzzling fix I would almost recommend this, but with games like Quantum Conundrum and Q.U.B.E providing more polished alternatives I can really only say it's worth a try for the very curious or ardent genre completionists. I would love to see a more refined game that uses this same mechanic but until then Twin Sector is more of a curiousity than anything else.
★☆☆☆☆ Terrible!
Puzzle
Worst game ever, and I'm not even joking. It's not that hard to satisfy me as a gamer, but this game failed completely. It begins with the sound, I have the German version and the robot sounds just horrible! I just can't listen to without having my ears bleed. They just recycled the same texture and it's not even good looking. And this is even more frustrating, because games with less developers have much more appealing graphics. The puzzles are frustrating, because they aren't nearly as understandable than the ones in Portal were. Puzzle games have to face this enemy. And for me personally, the puzzles in Twin Sector just were confusing, which is enforced by the strange physics. Huge boxes fly to the air and bounce of the ground as tennis balls. This game also misses a soul. Portal had this fantastic humour, but Twin Sector has no atmosphere at all.

This game has so much wasted potential the idea of it is cool, but the game itself is so poorly executed.

Twin Sector is an ancient game from 2009. It's a whopping 16 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for the typical features of modern gaming PCs, hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on contemporary machines. The game looks and feels dated. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an old game. This seems to have be lingering on Steam with an inflated price to try profit from abandonware. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. You even get 4K support, but before you grab your credit card to buy this, the developer doesn't know about drop down menus. The game starts at 720p Windowed mode. So you need to click through the resolutions one at a time, for each refresh rate at 720p, until you get to the next highest resolution... and repeat... until you get all the way up to 4K. It takes longer to configure the graphics for this game than it does to complete it. The game itself had some potential, despite rather poor production values for a 2009 game (Well, it's from HeadUp, this is not a triple-A publisher). You interact with the world with left and right mouse buttons as you have some powers or whatever... it's just too dated feeling and lacks engagement, with C grade writing, dated assets... When you play this game the first thing you think is you could be playing something better. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 18 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 110,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 110,000+ games on Steam? Twin Sector is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $5 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again. Even when it was new, this was never a triple-A game. This is the kind of game that went almost directly from the warehouse into the cheap bargain bins at the front of the shop. Now, on Steam, without any modernisation? This is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Metro Last Light", "Sleeping Dogs" or "Rainbow 6 Siege". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. Unfortunately Steam reviewers aren't presented with a "Maybe" option... if they did, that's what I'd choose. This isn't a completely bad game, but it's also not one of the best. As always, if you read my review and you can overlook the negatives I've called out, or they just aren't important to you, then by all means go ahead and buy this.
It feels a little like portal but with push & pull one click pulls the other pushes. You can tell it's from a small dev, as it loads excruciatingly slow. The Menus are fairly bad taking you to the main menu where while playing a game you don't expect to see "new game" or "load game" but you expect "resume". I think the idea is fine, the execution is lacking.
Poor Voice Acting Boring Story Boring Environments Annoying Puzzles If you like basic Puzzle games and aren't looking for anything special, go for it when it's on sale.
