This game is lots of fun, has a great variety of JDM vehicles, and cool customization features to really make the cars feel like they belong to you. I have spent hours customizing the vinyls, completing races and just driving on the Shunto Expressway. The only real dig I have on this game, is how unfair the AI becomes at the later difficulties. I noticed after I approached the level 4 performance parts, many opponents would wall ride corners, take no damage, and lose very little speed. However, you as the player have to slow down, because the wall damages your car. It is a small gripe, but it makes a number of the races at the higher difficulties more frustrating than enjoyable. Overall, past this one problem, game is preem and encapsulates on the experience I was looking for.
from playing zero on the play station. To now a upgraded gameplay, this game is fun for street racing. the perks also make it to where if you want a short race or a long time attack race. which i like. runs great on a 1050 nvidia so dont worry about graphics issues
Reminiscent of classic arcade racers, this game is simple and strikingly beautiful. The cars look and feel fantastic, and customization is satisfying - EVERYTHING centers on driving. Rather than standard races, you challenge opponents on the Tokyo Highway. Defeat them all to build your reputation and be allowed to race the higher-ups. Along the way there are car meets offering extra challenges, and some selective wanderers will only race you once you meet their conditions. No always online. No microtransactions.
I really but REALLY TRIED, to love this game but I'm sorry, its just overhyped as many racing games out there ... The handling is something that is so unable for someone to understand, the mechanics of the bosses and the rubberbanding is worse than a 2004 need for speed game. Sound engines are almost for every car the same, there is no variety, no taste in the game. it feels rushed to be completed. Very few visual customization options as well per car with rims being very few as well The optimization for a game of its graphics URGENTLY needs to be fixed, its not acceptable to max out a 7900XTX making it overheat with hotspot temps reaching +80C Last but not least the turbo cars ... holy moly, how am i supposed to play "guess the non-turbo car that will beat you today" when you already have all the upgrades available fitted while an N/A RX8 just beats you without sweating? there is no logic from that, when you have clear advantage you are in a bloody disadvantage. Also why the AWD cars just, don't feel like AWD cars? what's up with the handling? torque percentage F-B doesn't even feel like i make a difference. There is clearly no description on each setting that im changing so i have to play the classic "what does this button do" and have to figure out the hard way ... unless there is an update, i don't think is worth playing at the moment ...
Very cool racing game, less heavy on the customization than something like Need for Speed but more in-depth on actual tuning. I'd say the current price is a bit much, get it on sale.
Just like the old days. Lots of fun, especially if you played back in the day
As much as I loved the original games I can't recommend this game. The audio is horrible and you can't even hear the cars and the steering and controls are just horrible. it's a classic but maybe a little too stuck in the past. Had to request a refund
I really want to give this a neutral recommendation. Because it does what it says. Arcade style highway racer around Shuto, just like you'd expect from TXR. However I am left wanting. I also apologise for the formatting, and nonsensical progression of this rant disguised as a review. Oh and uh, TL;DR, as I kind of drag on a bit with useless information. Fun game, fairly simple. May insult you if you prefer retro sports cars. The sound design for the cars is questionable at best (I do not have a rant for this). And the power scaling is honestly terrible (I do have a rant for this, apologies in advance). It's set up to force you to get the newer cars. If, like me, you're an idiot who's obsessed with the R33, you will find yourself with a power cap of roughly 450ps (481ps if you hit the jackpot with legendary tuner, and get a power unit upgrade at a PA), by which time, I'd had to swap out to a VB S4 WRX to get past the next stages to unlock upgrades. So here is where you probably (maybe?) get confused, and I most certainly got confused. How come an FA24 (no hate, I love me a boxer-4, and oversquare is hot) is capable of making more power than an RB26 with the same upgrades? Well obviously because it's a newer car that requires a higher stage to unlock, duh. Unfortunately, this is not isolated to the RB26. The 1JZ, 2JZ, 13B, SR20, and 1UZ also suffer from this weirdly low power cap. I could also include the B16, but they do take considerably more work to make powerful. Also K20 makes less than some may expect, but neither 580, or 660ps is anything to cough at from a 2 litre, especially one presumably running off 100ron, opposed to e85? On the plus side, at least the EJ20 makes a rough 550ps fully upgraded? Suffers from the usual torque curve for an EJ though. Nice 9k redline, shame it's all down hill over 6k, and useless over 8k. You know, Subie things. (I like to see this, too fewer games acknowledge that redline isn't necessarily where peak power is) So why is this badly worded rant in my review? 'Cause it nearly killed the game for me. As previously stated, I'm obsessed with the R33, it's the car I want to use. I don't wish to farm the points to allow a VR38 swap. I want to use an RB26 in my R33. And a lot of people will want to keep the 1JZ in their A70 Supra/JZX100 Chaser, the 2JZ in their A80 Supra, the 13B in their RX-7, 1UZ in their Celsior. Knowing that realistically each of these engines have examples making considerably more power than the game allows, being forced to use a newer car to progress feels somewhat insulting. So if I feel this way, why still give this a positive recommendation, while wanting to give a neutral? 'Cause in the end, I find the game itself to be fun, and it doesn't lie to you about what it is. The issues I have are something only a pedant, or 90s JDM "but but they're better than everything else :c" fangirl's going to care about
Simple AA offline single-player game, just the way I like it. Kinda oldskool game-design vibes to it (as in like ps2 - Xbox 360 era), I had an absolute blast playing through to completion! It's one of those simple as you make it/ let it be, yet fully capable of offering up complexity/depth if you so choose to seek it out, at the same time. For me, definitely the type of game to come home to/ boot up over a chill weekend and just turn your brain off to. The game can be pretty addictive actually, ngl. The gameplay loop kind of reminds me of Pokémon in the way that it is, in all honesty, ultimately pretty repetitive. I can see how, much like the OG Pokémon formula wasn't for everyone, this similarly wouldn't be. It's either gonna be your "vibe" or it isn't. **my additional two cents, for what it's worth** AAA game development has for the most part been lackluster/ disappointing in many respects lately, so this was absolutely clutch for me. Personally overall I'd probably give it a solid 8/10, I really like the sense of progression in this game unlike*cough, cough*Forza Horizon. I would've definitely liked to see the dev's take more risks with the narrative/ story telling. For example imagine that in a sequel you start the game a lowly member of one of the various street racing gangs/ alliances/ clubs or whatever, and you have to slowly grind your way up the food chain/ pecking order. CRAWL YOU WORM. Eventually introducing some plot twists into the mix along the way, maybe your trusted gang only sees you as a means to an end/ betraying you/ were using you while convenient, and some player choice to where multiple endings can take place or something. PS: to Genki the Developers. Come on Genki your Tokyo Xtreme Racer games (much like, again, Pokémon) have been far too same-y for far too long, we have to admit that, it's still a good game with it's core formula. But hasn't really shifted gears per se' from since like all the way back, the good old Sega Dreamcast days. TAKE RISKS, EXPAND YOUR SCOPE, AND INNOVATE or you will end up just like that aforementioned Sega Dreamcast. Thank you. - sincerely, a long time TXR fan
