The Old City: Leviathan is an experiment in first person exploration that focuses entirely on story. All that exists is you and the world. Set in a decaying city from a civilization long past, The Old City: Leviathan puts the player in the shoes of a sewer dwelling isolationist.

I'll say that this isn't really my type of game. But I do try out, give a chance. You'll never know. I know now I didn't like this one. Whiles most of the world story is in text, mostly on the walls. It felt like turning a page in book. But you'll have to find where the next pages are. Reasons of not having to read too much in a single place. You'll need to explore and take in the world and story it tells together with the wall texts. The narration could've worked much better. If there was something to interact with or bounce. I felt like parts of the world is cut. As I only feel like a saw one of the factions, after a every trip. Where are the rest? Or I'm I missing something? In my opinion. The environment isn't worth it. There are some amazing areas. Too much to read. Cluttered everywhere. Is the narrator in the same world?

This game saved me at a very stressful time - my memory of playing this is entangled with Bonfire Toffee tea and lots of blankets as it was a particularly harsh winter and my old house did not have central heating. But this game was the escapism I needed... I loved wandering the environments and slowly uncovering the story through environmental storytelling. It was also nice to just see critters and monsters chilling and existing in this world without having to have any interaction with the protag or impact the story... it made the world feel more organic and alive. I'd definitely recommend this for anyone who just loves to walk around in an eerie, dingy, gloomy world and escape reality.
Have very fond memories of this one. Considered looking into starting working as a video game photographer while playing this game, lining up the camera angle to capture the beautiful renders. Reminded me of a song, "Find me and follow me through corridors" - (by the band) Franz Ferdinand ‧ 2004
You have of course been to the beach, but have you ever considered the two paths that there lie before you? One, is to sunbathe. Keeping yourself within the understood. Perhaps it is boring, but not enough for it to be an issue. Should you be the type of person inclined to choose this option. The calm of predictability is after all what you are seeking. The boredom and sanity are one, in this sense. If that's the case, I don't know that this game has much to offer you (beyond a shift in perspective you currently don't desire). The other option, is to venture out into the water. Will it be cold at first? Most definitely. That is what keeps some sunbathing, I think. Will you grow accustomed to the cold? In part, but always it will return, your body telling you that, should you stay too long, you will depart completely. Why do it then? Why venture into the painful & deadly? That which may only be endured, not enjoyed? Conviction. Conviction that the suffering will yield something, with an immense value. The belief that you can do much more than mere pleasure would limit your capacity to. That there is a purpose that lies beyond yourself , your creed , your capacity . And so, in striving for it, you will incorporate it, and be worth all the more. If this is your dream, if you feel a deep stirring within as you understand the meaning of these words, then -just as it does for me- The Old City calls for you. Heed its call; let Leviathan bolster your being, so that Nineveh may be cured. What other path is there? Not one worth pondering, surely... The unclean waters are a heavy burden to shoulder alone, without ice. The exploratory narrative and pages intentionally left blank (to let the intensity of the former breathe) may admittedly interrupt the flow and lead to tedium, if one is not sufficiently in tune with the games dense and poetic prose (and falling out of tune is a tragic and fairly frequent possibility). It should be approached as a scavenger hunt instead of as a sermon, I'd ironically preach. And if one is unwilling to engage with some rather dark and gruesome themes, then one best steer clear. Though I would uninvitedly caution you from closing your eyes too much: those dark sights hold beauty in abundance too. A rosary and love letter to the agnostic spirit, The Old City: Leviathan is a philosophical and spiritual work that appears masterful in symbols and rich in meaning. An experience that calls for me to return and wander, both in body and mind.
Need a surreal change of pace? Don't come to this expecting to know everything, thats not the point. Just enjoy the journey
I just finished playing this for the second time, first time maybe eight years ago. I rarely replay games, but the vibe pulled me back. I've listened to the soundtrack a lot over the years, sometimes on repeat. It might be hard to get in to the head of a deranged, isolated person wrestling with philosophical ideas on their own, but I used to be one, so the kinda disorganized and sloppy idea-forming makes sense to me. It feels spontaneous, and in-the-works, and that's the point: philosophy is not a solution, but a never-ending process. A lot of games that are intended to be atmospheric suffer from being too glossy and clean-looking, giving them a sort of weightlessness (that's typical of 3D games), but this one feels right. My one complaint is that there's no camera bob or footstep SFX, you feel like you're just a floating camera instead of a person. Maybe the idea was to make the PLAYER feel weightless INSTEAD, but I found it distracting. Good liminal and surreal stuff. I got more out of the philosophical ramblings this time, after having read too many books.
