Final fantasy for americans
When I booted this game up, I was immediately drawn in by the combat. It's really fun. The job system? Fantastic and the best it's been since FF Tactics which is a game I absolutely love. The story though. ♥♥♥♥♥♥. At first it's genuinely intriguing, I had tears in my eyes watching Jack demand to fight Chaos, constantly restate his intention to kill Chaos and ignore anything any other character says if it doesn't relate to Chaos. However, the game starts to lose it's charm quite quickly. After a while it feels like Jack's autistic rambling about Chaos inhibits the other characters from being likeable? Like he's the one performance in a movie that makes the whole thing suck. He's like Rebel Wilson, incredibly one note and genuinely unlikeable in large doses. The fact that the other characters don't tell him to shut the hell up at any point makes them cowards. This, combined with the lack of enemy variety and mission variety and the ridiculous amount of loot management makes this game feel like a slog, even though at it's core it has everything needed to be a fun action title like FF16. 3/10

Preface: I bought this on sale for 16€. Playtime includes 31 hours of Season Pass (which I played like 3 months later). I have not played any adjacent Final Fantasy games but I streamed it for a friend who has. The reason why I bought this game was because of the memetic trailers. "I'm here to kill Chaos" is just campy enough that I knew I would get a good chuckle out of this game for an evening or two with some friends. As far as story goes, what I saw is what I got. Without knowing anything about Final Fantasy 1, I was just in it for the Chaos, but my friend got a kick out of all the Final Fantasy references and says it's an excellent Final Fantasy 1 retelling. The hack'n'slash/soulslikey combat (that I later learned is pretty much what Nioh is) was solid. The various systems the game dumped on me at the start were maybe a little overwhelming, but for the main game, I didn't really need to engage with them too much, which was fine for me because I just wanted to see more of the story. As the difficulty started ramping up, I was getting more and more engaged in the action itself, checking out the dozens of different jobs until I locked myself into one that really stuck with me (Sage). When the season pass content started ramping up the difficulty, I found myself actually delving super deep into the equipment and other mechanics which just made me love the game even more, but I'll cover that more in the Season Pass DLC review. Just know that there's plenty of room for variety of builds and there's plenty of difficult challenges that you can choose to take or avoid that lets you experiment a bit if you're getting bored. Overall, if you love a protagonist who doesn't want to listen to loredumps, tries his hardest to skip any dialogue and absolutely cannot read any rooms at all, it's a great game even if you don't care about Final Fantasy. For the Final Fantasy lovers (especially of the first one), seeing those old monsters come to life in a reimagined way must be ecstatic. ARE THOSE CUBES????? So many people write this game off as being to edgy or campy or as another reviewer wrote "so-bad-its-good"... How do people not get that it was very much intended for Jack to be a giga-edgy dork. If you are into goofy, campy humor then you will 100% love this game. I think it must just be that people weren't expecting a Final Fantasy game with a sense of humor, but Team NINJA did a masterful job! (side note for the crowd that always switches JRPG audio to Japanese first thing, they really went all out with the English voice acting for this. The voice actors absolutely nailed it, 10/10. IMO as somebody that doesn't speak Japanese, the English version definitely makes the humor more incredible so if you gotta play it in Japanese, you should also do a playthrough in English or you are missing out big time!)
I only recommend this game for the combat, which is its only redeeming quality, and even then only on a heavy sale 10~15 bucks. The cutscenes are a joke and have some very odd pacing, and they almost feel like there's meant to be an open world or hubs to move around in between most of them. Cutscene walking into town> loading> cutscene of us in the town> loading> cutscene in the throne room> loading> "gameplay" allowing us to walk around small throne room and optionally talk to 2 other people. leave throne> cutscene leaving town> loading> cutscene walking into chaos shrine>loading> explore the chaos shrine level. I was surprised by the mission select screen as well, just a static map with a few nodes that pop up here and there, some side missions appear later and are redo's of the levels but in reverse.
