Spelunky 2 is a masochistic experience and after 1,100 hours I have finally succeeded in achieving all of my goals for this game, which includes my first completion of the game's most challenging ending yet: The Cosmic Ocean clear. And I must say, it was a pretty rewarding grind.
i have played this game on console since its release, and played Spelunky HD before that. I believe this game to be a amazing sequel to HD. A perfect game made more perfect.

this is the best roguelike ever. i haven't played that many, but if i had, this would still top them all. play it if you want a fun, silly looking game that requires some serious skill to master. i have hundreds of hours in this game across different platforms and i still haven't beaten the hardest ending.
Did you enjoy Spelunky HD, but didn't think it had enough utter BS? Then this is the sequel for you! Sure — it's massive, beautiful, and endlessly replayable. But the tightness and balance of the original is swapped in large part with pure cruelty: full-screen enemy spam, unpredictable instakill traps, and tile-perfect navigation. I've never played another game expressing so much sheer contempt for the player, and I find myself raging at the game far more often than I'm actually having fun. In absolute terms, maybe a 7/10. Good game but flawed. On balance, I'd give it a thumbs up, but I wish there was a middle finger option. EDIT: Though as I play more after going back to HD for a bit, I do appreciate that the game aims to recreate the joy, mystery, and difficulty of the original through the eyes of an experienced player while expanding on it substantially. Reminds me a bit of Metal Slug X in that way. There's still far too many cheap deaths, though. And I just can't believe how unfair the hitboxes are sometimes. Incidentally, I think the shortcuts are far more essential to learning the game than in the original.

Pretty engaging game with a high difficulty, but lots of things to do and discover to push you even further beyond every run.
