best game ever
I would give spelunky 2 a lukewarm thumbs up if you've played the first game, and a slightly more positive thumbs up if you haven't. In a vacuum the game is fun but it does also have some flaws. Firstly, I think the game borrows too much from spellunky 1. There is definitely a lot of new content and this is a much larger more polished game overall, but as a sequel it seems just a bit too "derivative" for lack of a better word. To put it another way, Spellunky 2 feels more like DLC and a texture pack for spellunky 1 than a new spanking game (maybe that is slightly too harsh but I think it would be dishonets of me to ignore a small feeling of dissapointment at the scope of the similarities). Most of the same items are still here with minor or no tweaks and some of the new items are cool, but realistically don't really shake up the game very much, the ol gun and jetpack combo still reigns supreme. Most of the enemies are admittedly either fully new or reworked to varying degrees and the game is definitely bigger, better and more complex than 1. Now before I get too negative I want to right myself and acknowledge Spellunky is one of the most tightly designed platformers out there. I think in many cases spellunky even beats handcrafted platformers while being mostly procedurally generated. Just about everything in the game has been measured at an atomic level to be the exact right amount, your jump height, your whip hitbox, weird interactions between game elements etc. It is immensely satisfying to discover the "science" of how to clear a spellunky map and how to use the enemies and items available to your advantage. If you like learning by playing and experimentation Spellunky is a great game to be playing, because there are tonnes of things to discover and the game generally encourages and rewards you for doing so. On the more negative side again (for some this might be a positive) the game is brutally difficult. One wrong input and your god run goes down the drain. Spellunky more than most games does not give the player "guardrails" to guard progress within a run. You can get better equipment but just about anything can still hit you midair knocking you out and putting you in a lengthy recovery animation, you can farm 99 hearts of health and still get stunlocked by a basic enemy and die (or fall onto spikes). As someone who has 100% achievement completion in Spellunky 2 (except for a cosmic ocean win) my feeling is that the game is too punishing. It demands perfection even in the face of random nonsense that is (largely) out of the player's control. That is not to say there is no skill involved, quite the contrary, you need immense skill to even begin to enjoy the game, that was sort of my point. Sure, with some luck and practice maybe you can get to the "basic" ending (Tiamat) but if this is as far as you go you won't really get to dig into the secrets and the substance of spellunky. Let me just say, it is a bold move to design a game so unforgivingly, and while I think on a practical level the game is worse for it, I cannot deny that because the game is unrelenting, there is a real sense of achievement to reach even modest milestones. So make of the difficulty point what you will, it likely depends on your personality whether you'll enjoy it or not. Another positive, the game has multiplayer. If playing solo was hard, in multiplayer it is borderline impossible, but once again, I have to say there is just something fun about fighting an uphill battle in a team. Overall if you never played spellunky before and you are up for a challenge, the game is worth experiencing, but it is definitely not for everyone.
This is the greatest game in the universe, god bless derek yu. i hate this game.
hard and a chalinge i recomend this to pepole who like very hard games.
made me rip all my skin off
