Like it. is something different
one of the worst games i ever played! i got it cheap so not a lot of money lost there. but i wouldnt recommend it at all even if it was free .
SpellMaster: The Saga is an ambitious indie fantasy RPG developed by Spellbook Creations and published by Valkyrie Initiative that aims squarely at the tradition of classic, systemic role-playing games rather than modern streamlined action titles. From the very beginning, it presents itself as a game driven by exploration, choice, and player agency, inviting you into a large, continuous world that rarely holds your hand. The result is an experience that feels earnest and expansive, filled with ideas and systems that reflect a deep love for old-school RPG design, even when its execution struggles to keep pace with its ambitions. The narrative places you in the role of a young and relatively untested spellcaster who arrives in the troubled land of Allion at a time when dark gods, ancient forces, and political instability threaten to tear the region apart. Rather than relying on heavy cinematic storytelling, the game delivers its plot through quests, environmental storytelling, and interactions with NPCs who follow their own routines. Much of the story unfolds organically as you explore towns, wilderness areas, ruins, and dungeons, creating a sense that the world exists independently of the player. This approach rewards curiosity and patience, as important context and optional lore are often hidden off the main path rather than delivered through scripted sequences. Exploration is one of the strongest pillars of SpellMaster: The Saga. The open world is broad and encourages wandering, with caves, forests, abandoned structures, and monster-infested regions scattered throughout the map. There is a deliberate lack of rigid level scaling, meaning that some areas are far more dangerous than others early on. This design choice reinforces the feeling of vulnerability and progression, pushing players to learn when to retreat, when to prepare, and when to test their limits. Discovering new locations, powerful enemies, or valuable loot often feels earned rather than guaranteed, reinforcing the game’s commitment to player-driven discovery. Combat blends melee and magic in a flexible but uneven system. Players can wield swords, staves, and other weapons while also casting a wide variety of spells, allowing for hybrid playstyles that mix physical combat with elemental or arcane abilities. In theory, this flexibility encourages experimentation and creative builds. In practice, combat can feel rough around the edges, with stiff animations, inconsistent hit detection, and enemy AI that sometimes lacks nuance. Battles tend to rely more on positioning, preparation, and raw statistics than on fluid moment-to-moment action, which may appeal to fans of older RPGs but feel dated to players expecting modern action responsiveness. Progression systems are deep and layered, offering skill development, equipment upgrades, crafting, and alchemy. Gathering materials to brew potions or enhance gear adds a sense of long-term investment, especially as tougher enemies demand better preparation. There is also a broader meta element tied to the idea of establishing and developing a magical academy, which hints at long-term influence over the world and your role within it. While this system adds thematic depth, it often feels underutilized, serving more as an atmospheric and narrative feature than a fully realized management mechanic. Quest design emphasizes freedom and consequence, frequently allowing objectives to be completed in multiple ways or approached out of sequence. Some choices subtly affect future interactions or outcomes, reinforcing the game’s emphasis on agency. However, this openness comes with drawbacks: quest instructions can be vague, journal tracking is sometimes unclear, and players may find themselves uncertain about whether progress is blocked or simply requires more exploration. For players who enjoy piecing together objectives through observation and experimentation, this can be engaging; for others, it may come across as unnecessarily opaque. Visually, SpellMaster: The Saga reflects its indie scale and classic inspirations. Environments are functional and atmospheric but lack the polish and animation quality of larger productions. Character models, effects, and UI elements often feel dated, and technical issues such as camera awkwardness, clipping, and performance inconsistency can disrupt immersion. At the same time, the visual style supports readability and reinforces the game’s old-school identity, which some players may find nostalgic rather than off-putting. Ultimately, SpellMaster: The Saga is a game defined by contrast. Its world design, sense of freedom, and systemic depth demonstrate genuine ambition and passion for the RPG genre, while its rough mechanics, uneven combat, and technical limitations prevent it from fully realizing that vision. It is best suited for players who appreciate classic open-world RPG philosophies, are willing to tolerate jank in exchange for scale and choice, and enjoy uncovering systems through trial and error. For those seeking polished action or tightly guided storytelling, its flaws may overshadow its strengths, but for patient explorers and fans of old-school fantasy sandboxes, SpellMaster: The Saga offers a sprawling, imperfect, yet sincere role-playing experience. Rating: 5/10
