I've played the older Sonic Wings/Aero Fighters games when I was a kid (even though I'm admittedly terrible at them). I would rank Reunion as an okay title in the series. It does the bare minimum to qualify as a Sonic Wings game but falls far short of what is expected of one, especially in 2026. Graphics: Sonic Wings goes with 2.5D graphics which is a step up from the older Neo Geo games, but the models for the enemies and the environment lack polish and feel kind of dated, almost like a PS2-era game. The color of the enemy projectiles sometimes clash with the background, making them hard to spot. Sound: Reunion comes with a new soundtrack that didn't really leave an impression on me. However, you do have the option of playing with an arranged soundtrack made up of remixed songs from the past games including my personal favorite, the boss theme from AF3 ("SHOW ME WHAT YOU'VE GOOOOOOT"). You can even customize the music for each stage and boss, although I wish the selection of music tracks could have been bigger. Gameplay: If you've played one of the previous games, it's largely the same here. Pick a character and blast through 8 stages of enemies while collecting power-ups and bombs and facing off against huge bosses. They've even kept the grammatically quirky dialogue for the banter between characters and in the endings as a throwback to the classic games (no doubt intentional). A new feature here is having a character fly solo but also with a wingman whose special attack you can access, in addition to keeping your own special attack. So if you pick Mao Mao with Hien as a wingman, she can use both her time-stopping special attack as well as Hien's laser beam bomb. This is honestly a great addition and there are lots of potential combinations to explore and play with. The 8 stages are pretty short in length and each loop takes around 20 minutes. The stages and bosses are kinda dull compared to previous games, despite returning stalwarts like the Super XX and Vazeel. The boss fights in previous games were epic battles of endurance as the bosses went through transformation after transformation or as you shot each part off the main body. Here in Reunion, not so much. I really wished there was a branching path system like AF3 and Special which would have really boosted the replayability. Closing notes: What's on offer here is very lacking. You get two unlockable characters and that's it. This makes the high price that the developers are asking hard to stomach. I bought it at 70% off during a sale and I still think I paid too much for it. If there were more content like more characters from past games, unlockable alternate aircraft for the characters, more music tracks, some kind of museum with stuff from the older games to browse through, an ending viewer among other things, maybe the high price would be justified. As it is, there's not enough to entice newcomers to come in and not enough nostalgia for veterans to stay. However, I would still recommend it IF you can get it on a steep discount for fun, quick sessions if you have time to spare.
Great shmup release, an obvious labor of love. Looks way better in game than in screenshots somehow. Also... Sonic Wings Special for the Sega Saturn Original JPY price: ¥7,800 Equivalent in 1996 USD: ~$72 Value in today’s dollars (2025): ~$147
I purchased this game for $17.99. Sonic Wings Reunion feels like a 3D knockoff of the original Sonic Wings franchise. The first game that I played in the series was Sonic Wings on the SFC back in 1993. The game feels very generic compared to the original sprite work. Using the analog stick the game feel very stilted and not really responsive. I recommend using a Dpad or an arcade stick. On the plus side, Sonic Wings Reunion runs at an 600+ FPS on my system without Vsync. I am going to keep this game since I love shooters, but for anyone else I'd wait for a steep discount (around $5 - $10) to pick this one up. This remake feels very phoned in for an legendary franchise.
This is a difficult game to recommend simply based on its base price. The game itself is just what it says on the tin: A good, new Sonic Wings / Aero Fighters. If you like the series, you will most likely like this game as well. But as said, it's price is just not OK in any way, shape or form. SHMUP's being a niche and thus, needing higher prices to offset the lower player base is perfectly fine. But let's not kid ourselves here: A 60 bucks price tag for a game with a visual presentation so bad that it actually causes clarity issues is simply ridiculous. If you get it on sale for 20 or even 30 bucks, it's a perfectly good Sonic Wings game! But its base price is just comically overpriced for what's on offer.
If you love shmup game with lot of characters, then this game is for you. Each character has unique attack and bomb. There are total 10 character (2 of them are unlockable character). and The Music is Awesome. While you in the character selection, Press E or Q to change the music / sound mode, I recommend to change it to Arrange mode for the best experience haha. I bought this game on sale -70%
