I can only recommend getting this game if there is a steep sale. If you like the Sonic Wings series, this game can be enough of a fix to pass your time for a short play session. The sound effects is good enough, it's one of the highlight and is what make Sonic Wings standout. I'm quite a fan of the Sonic Wings series, originally playing it at the arcade in the 90s, known as Aero Fighters in the US. For this game, it's not the best the franchise can offer. I haven't played it too much, but from initial impression, the main criticism I have is the conversion to 3D graphics, and the short and limited amount of stages (and thus bosses). The use of 3D background doesn't look great especially compared to 2D background of the older games. It look dated for today and won't age well. The clouds and water looks nice, but not so much buildings and landscapes. Also they decided to make the enemy's bullets pinkish instead of red like the older games, this combined with the 3D background makes it harder to see enemy's bullets. Most of the stages are not memorable, especially the final stage is just ugly with weird psychedelic colors. In the older games, there were a good amount of variation in location of the stages, like the Panama? canal, Paris night time, under the sea, going to space, Hawaii going over a volcano. Most of the stages in this game are cities fly over with ugly 3D buildings. except for the sea and the arctic stages. As for the bosses designs, some are from the older games which I like but lot a of them aren't unique enough and the conversion to 3D isn't great. They need to pay attention to the scrolling speed of the background. In the older games, sometimes when approaching a boss the background slows down significantly to create anticipation, or speed up very fast to create frantic feeling. It's lacking a bit of variation here. Some of the effects like each characters' unique bomb animation and their shots just doesn't look substantial and cool enough. The bombs animation are too fast and doesn't feel devastating enough. They should re-release Sonic Wings Limited, which is one of the more popular version. Or at least model the design of the next game from that. Pick some of the best characters, stages design, and bosses from Sonic Wings 1, 2, and 3. The game probably will feel more substantial if you can play it on a monitor in portrait mode, instead of landscape.
Very cool graphics and sounds. Like REAL cool. Yes, it is twice the price on Steam as it is on Switch or the other consoles. I have never found an official reason for that, but I think it runs best on PC. Probably because of the combination of 2D and 3D graphics. They charge a lot for it. I bought it on sale and it was still expensive. The creators want their cash and they want it bad. As of the time of this review, the lowest price has been $47.99. The game is short, but it has 3 different difficulty levels and lots of combinations of characters you can try. Each combination of characters has its own different conversations and they are kind of funny. So it does not stay the same between runs. It is a work of art. Treat yourself and check it out sometime. I noticed it was made by Hamster who also makes the Arcade Archives collection. Arcade Archives just released its 500th retro arcade game for modern consoles when it released the original Space Invaders for Christmas 2025. It is the only Space Invaders release that nails the original arcade sounds. So check this game out and check that out too.
Objectively, a piece of doo-doo. Subjectively? For whatever reason, I love this game lol. It just puts me in a trance and it's freeing and fun. The dialogue is hilarious, and it's an honest to god arcade game!
**Flawed, charming, and very rough on the eyes** This game is... flawed. I do not know whether this is an AMD issue, a Linux issue, or simply the game being the way it is, but I strongly recommend turning **V-Sync** on. With it enabled, I was able to notice visual effects and shadows that I genuinely was not seeing before, which made the game much more palatable. Even then, the 3D presentation still feels rough, and some projectiles, especially thin needle-like rockets, can blend into the background. On **Steam Deck**, this is especially harsh. Some enemies and bullets feel tiny enough to be made for ants, so I would avoid playing it there. The game felt much better on my desktop PC, which makes me suspect there may be some odd internal scaling going on for smaller bullets and popcorn enemies. Some stages are also genuinely rough on the eyes. The **Arctic stage** feels like a flashbang, and the **final stage** is a moving wall of color that can become nauseating to look at. That said, there are good things here. The **character banter** is genuinely funny, and the Engrish adds a weird nostalgic charm. There are **two unlockable ships**, and each individual character and character pairing has its own banter and ending, which gives the game more personality than I expected. The **arranged soundtrack** is also really good, and the large variety of ships gives the game a surprising amount of replay flavor. There are also nice little touches, like the scoring items changing by stage: rubles in the Russian stage, yen in the Japanese stage, euros in Spain, and so on. There is even a **second, much harder loop**, which I appreciated. Some boss designs are great, especially the big rocket and the large Arctic cruiser, though others felt less memorable. Overall, I did have fun with it, but I cannot give it an easy recommendation. There is charm here, and fans of Sonic Wings may get a lot out of the character interactions and variety, but the visual readability issues and rough presentation make it hard for me to fully endorse, even on the sale price.
RECOMMEND ON SALE! It’s a fun Shmup, it’s not $60 fun though. I’m actually a little blown by the fact it’s so expensive on Steam, I thought the Switch asking price was a lot with it never being on sale. Grabbed this for $17, as a diehard shmup fan I didn’t mind biting at this price. I’d advise anyone casually in the genre to hold for a cheaper sale price. It’s fun, but there are much better shmups you can get cheaper.
