Reviews
As a long-time Sonic fan, I thoroughly enjoyed it, in spite of its many shortcomings and in addition to the many efforts Sonic Team and all the developers made to make this the very best experience. The story, while a little much with its references, is nothing but a highlight after so many previous stories tried to downplay the dichotomy between serious/reflective character moments and light-hearted cartoony-nature the series has always been known for. It was great to see the main team (Tails, Knuckles, and Amy) have strong, positive character moments, especially with their arcs setting up growth for future games. More importantly, making them feel like they've lived through the 35 years of the series was something us fans didn't know we needed and got. That's on top of the new character, Sage, and all the interesting new lore surrounding the Ancients, the Chaos Emeralds, and the Titans vs. The End. The presentation left a lot to be desired, unfortunately, as the cutscenes typically showed characters statically talking to each other and devoid of expression/animation. Alongside this, leaving a lot of the lore to things like the Egg Memos screamed that, despite the writers planning for a strong story, they did not get to deliver it in a traditional sense and instead had to pivot to something simpler. The Final Horizon also continues to add to the story, continuing the same pluses/minuses of the main story. The gameplay is separated into two modes: Open Zone and Cyber Space. The Open Zone gameplay, while it has its flaws with the art direction and pop-in, was very exciting to experience. Getting to tweak Sonic to feel exactly how you want him to feel was awesome, along with how fast he can get when running around the Islands. I wasn't the biggest fan of all the abstract gameplay elements (platforms, red rings, pulleys, etc.) being presented in the air, without any attention as to *how* they work there. In other Sonic games, these elements are presented organically, in tandem with the environment and the structures the developers build to make them believable. Seeing crazy rails and platforms strewn about the world makes the Starfall Islands feel less like an actual, legitimate place Sonic explores and more like a level in a game that was designed by game developers. And that's a bit rough when, in the past, they've been able to do this. As for Cyber Space, it's a very mixed bag. The gameplay is pre-fixed to what the developers decided, rather than the fine-tuned settings you got to construct, so Sonic can sometimes be extra challenging to control. And as for the levels, ignoring the reuse of previous level themes we've seen time and time again (*cough* *cough* Green Hill *wheeze*) and ignoring the reuse of entire level design from previous games, it's very hit or miss when everything lines up to be engaging enough. I found that, the combination of Sonic's pre-set physics and Sonic Adventure 2 level design, made to be some of the better levels. especially as they sometimes would diverge slightly to create new level design in-between. Additionally, the completely new levels and one of the only new themes (Eternal Highway) were great, but then there were weird, random elements such as the awful drifting mechanic or the slow skateboard Sonic has to use for the very last level. The Final Horizon is great in that they absolutely do great at trying to create new mechanics and completely new levels, most of which seem to work great! It is limited, though, by the insanely difficult collectables and the lack of checkpoints. Still, I felt the gameplay was a net positive, held back by necessary experimentation Sonic Team needed to implement in order to begin this new, long-term direction they're planning for. Above all, you can genuinely feel the developers' efforts to make this game big and fantastic, something Sonic had sorely been lacking for years. And despite some of the missteps, I can absolutely recommend this game to any Sonic fan. Just, make sure to do some research on gameplay beforehand! OH! And btw, the Titan fights are 10/10.
Find Your Flame
pretty fun game i got it when it came out
unplayable kal
I still think the game could use some polish in many areas but the overall core gameplay is very fun. The story is decent, the music is awesome, and it controls fairly well but takes getting used to. I'm not a huge fan of how the 2d cyberspace levels feel to play though. The thing that bugs me the most about the game is that it feels like a beta test still, with many physics quirks that have gotten in the way a few times. Aside from those two things however, once you get to the bosses you can almost forget all of that as you have the time of your life fighting them, listening to an epic soundtrack in the background! Overall, good fun but could use some work.
