Serious Sam VR: The Second Encounter is a full-throttle virtual reality shooter that embraces the series’ old-school roots and amplifies them through immersive, physical gameplay. Developed by Croteam VR and published by Devolver Digital alongside Croteam, this VR adaptation faithfully recreates the content and spirit of the original Serious Sam: The Second Encounter while reworking its systems to function comfortably and effectively in virtual reality. Rather than toning down its chaos to accommodate VR, the game doubles down on sheer intensity, delivering an experience that feels both nostalgic and freshly invigorating. The campaign drops players into a globe-trotting barrage of oversized arenas and enemy swarms, where survival hinges on constant movement, spatial awareness, and smart weapon usage. Enemies flood the battlefield in large numbers, attacking from every direction with little mercy, and VR places the player squarely in the center of that storm. The sense of scale is immediately striking, as towering monsters and charging hordes feel far more threatening when they loom over you at full size. Combat becomes a physical exercise, requiring players to turn, strafe, and react instinctively as threats close in. Gunplay is the heart of the experience, and it translates remarkably well into VR. Weapons feel powerful and satisfying, with motion-controlled aiming making every shot more personal and deliberate. The ability to dual-wield firearms adds a layer of empowerment and spectacle, encouraging aggressive playstyles that fit the series’ tone. From rapid-fire guns to heavy-hitting explosives and melee options, the arsenal remains varied and flexible, allowing players to adapt quickly to different enemy types and encounter designs. The result is a combat loop that feels intense without being unwieldy, rewarding precision and awareness over passive strategies. Movement and comfort options are handled with a surprising degree of care. The game offers multiple locomotion styles, including smooth movement, teleportation, and snap turning, allowing players to tailor the experience to their comfort level. These options make the game accessible to a wide range of VR users while still supporting high-speed, freeform movement for those who prefer it. This flexibility is crucial given the game’s relentless pace, and it helps prevent motion discomfort from overshadowing the thrill of combat. Multiplayer further expands the game’s appeal. Cooperative play transforms the campaign into a shared battle for survival, with multiple players coordinating firepower and positioning to withstand enemy waves. Competitive modes add another dimension, offering fast-paced matches that embrace arcade chaos rather than tactical precision. While the multiplayer community may not always be bustling, the option to team up or compete adds meaningful replay value and reinforces the game’s identity as a social, action-driven experience. Visually, the game retains the bright, exaggerated style that defines the Serious Sam franchise. Environments are large and readable, enemy designs are instantly recognizable, and visual clarity is prioritized to ensure players can react quickly amid the chaos. While the presentation does not aim for cutting-edge realism, it serves the gameplay exceptionally well, maintaining performance and readability even during the most crowded encounters. The game’s biggest limitation is also its most defining trait: its single-minded focus on action. Narrative elements are minimal, and players looking for story depth or character development will find little to engage with beyond the premise. Additionally, the physical demands of sustained VR combat can make long sessions tiring, particularly for players unaccustomed to high-intensity VR experiences. However, these aspects are largely expected given the game’s design philosophy. Ultimately, Serious Sam VR: The Second Encounter succeeds by staying true to what makes the franchise memorable while embracing the strengths of virtual reality. It delivers a raw, energetic shooter experience that feels tailor-made for players who crave relentless action and visceral immersion. For fans of classic FPS design and VR enthusiasts looking for a demanding, adrenaline-fueled experience, it stands as one of the more satisfying and faithful VR adaptations of a traditional shooter available on Steam. Rating: 8/10
I just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love standing with my own (non visible) feet in this childhood memory. Great Experience, 10/10, would kill again.
Love it! This game has one of the best VR sniper implementation I have seen!
Top! so sollten alle klassiker ins VR wechseln, da bezahlt man gerne ein zweites mal :)
