I first played the original Serious Sam: The First Encounter over 20 years ago, long before the HD version existed. Coming back to it now was a pure nostalgia trip, and I'm happy to say that the game still holds up incredibly well. What makes Serious Sam special is its simplicity. No unnecessary mechanics, no endless tutorials, no complicated progression systems—just you, a huge arsenal of weapons, and hundreds of enemies charging at you from every direction. It's the kind of old-school FPS experience that feels refreshing even today. The HD remaster does a great job of preserving everything that made the original memorable while improving the visuals and performance. The environments look better, the enemies are more detailed, and the game runs smoothly, but it never loses the charm and spirit of the classic version. The massive battles are still exciting, the soundtrack still gets your adrenaline pumping, and the iconic enemy screams still trigger instant memories. Playing it again reminded me why this game became a legend among FPS fans. If you enjoyed the original back in the day, this HD version is absolutely worth revisiting. And if you've never played Serious Sam before, it's a fantastic opportunity to experience one of the best old-school shooters ever made. A timeless classic that proves great gameplay never gets old. 10/10 – worth every minute for both nostalgia and pure fun.
Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter is exactly what it promises to be: a classic old-school FPS built around fast movement, large enemy hordes and constant action. There is very little focus on narrative, progression systems or anything beyond the core objective of moving forward and surviving increasingly chaotic encounters. The gameplay follows a formula that was extremely common during its era. You explore large maps, collect weapons and fight dozens of enemies at the same time while constantly staying on the move. The game rarely asks the player to do anything beyond shooting, dodging and adapting to larger enemy waves, but that simplicity is also part of its identity. One aspect that surprised me is how the level design avoids excessive repetition. Many shooters from this period relied heavily on reusing environments and layouts, but throughout my time playing I rarely felt like I was running through the same locations over and over again. My biggest criticism is not necessarily directed at the game itself, but rather at how my own preferences have changed over the years. When I was younger, especially during the Windows XP era, I spent countless hours playing Serious Sam 2 and similar shooters. At the time, endless waves of enemies, simple objectives and pure action were enough to keep me entertained for entire afternoons. Today, after playing hundreds of games across many different genres, I find it much harder to stay invested in a gameplay loop built almost entirely around arena combat and enemy hordes. The formula still works, and I can understand why so many players continue to enjoy it, but it no longer holds my attention the way it once did. That does not make Serious Sam HD a bad game. On the contrary, it successfully delivers exactly the experience it was designed to provide. It knows what it wants to be and remains faithful to the identity that helped make the franchise popular in the first place. In the end, Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter is a solid classic shooter that still captures the spirit of old-school FPS design. It may not have the same appeal for me that it had years ago, but I can still appreciate what it represents and why it earned such a strong reputation among fans of the genre. Меня очень сильно забавляет как в игре ремастернули лишь саму графику, но сами звуки оставили примяком из 2001 года, из-за чего даже немного воспринимается как хоррор из-за рассинхрона визуала и аудио
Absolute classic, they don't make games like this nowadays.
Sam, I am!
My review covers TFE and TSE as one game. Like most Serious Sam fans, I consider The First Encounter and The Second Encounter together as Serious Sam 1. Not much to say when it comes to define this classic: If you want to experience a straightforward FPS without the complex mechanics and systems that modern shooters tend to layer on, Serious Sam is exactly that. Each weapon has its place against specific enemy types, making weapon switching a natural and satisfying part of the experience. The game is packed with quirky and funny secrets that reward curious players, though sometimes the reward is a punishment. The Second Encounter introduces power-ups and the serious bomb, which are welcome additions, and TSE's Mayan levels are my favourite but overall I prefer TFE's levels. Also, in my opinion, The First Encounter has the better final boss of the two releases. I want to point out that the classic versions offer a closer experience to the original game. The HD versions, on the other hand, offer a more modern experience and are best played through the Fusion version, which is the most refined and polished way to experience them.
pure fun, colorful and vibrant levels, no annoying gimmicks like modern games.
This game is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fever dream. People on drugs were doing it and that’s not even a hyperbole. Words cannot explain how epic this game is. Dude grab it on sale and trust me this going to be the most testosterone educing experience ever. One of my favorites boomer shooters so far 10/10
