Saurian is a survival-simulation experience about living the life of a dinosaur. Starting from the egg, you must survive to adulthood amidst the perilous Hell Creek ecosystem of 66 million years ago, meticulously reconstructed with the help of professional paleontologists.
A bit of (pre)history
The Saurian project was crowdfunded in June 2016, raising over USD 200,000 and unlocking ambitious stretch goals such as multiplayer and VR support. It was released on Steam as an Early Access game in August 2017. The pace of updates and devblogs felt quite decent for an indie title, though it slowed down with time as these things always do. Four years later, in May 2021, the dev team revealed on their blogthat the former manager of the project had stolen around USD 75,000 from the company's bank account. He was removed from the company, but the damage had already been done and the project seriously lost momentum. The latest (last?) patch was released in June 2023. The latest devlog was posted in January 2025, specifying that the dev team was down to 5 unpaid volunteers working on Saurian in their spare time. It now seems highly unlikely that the game will ever receive any further update. The Steam forum and Discord server of the game still count some die-hard fans who believe in a rebound, but 14 months of radio silence and nearly 3 years without a patch tell me that keeping hope is more of an act of faith than a reasonable expectation.
What's in this fossil bed
So let's review the current content. There are two playable species: the dakotaraptor, available since the Early Access start, and the triceratops, added in October 2020. They play radically differently. The triceratops is a heavy weight herbivore which prefers living in a herd. This game is a simulation aiming for scientific accuracy over pure fun, so playing as a slow moving herbivore feels rarely thrilling. You eat ferns, drink freshwater (saltwater will increase your thirst), interact and mate with your fellow herd members, and learn to identify bipeds. What's moving behind these trees: an lone anatosaurus looking for a waterpoint, a grumpy pachycephalosaurus or an actual threat? Playing as a young triceratops, I once had to lead my siblings across a river despite the risk of getting caught by crocodilians as a large tyrannosaurus was hunting us. He ate my sister and let us go, satiated. Outside of these rare situations of danger, the life of a herbivore feels pretty dull. The Dakotaraptor on the other hand is a highly mobile carnivore armed with the dromaeosaurid's signature sickle claw. Since it needs to hunt for a living it offers a much more dynamic experience than the trike. As a hatchling or a juvenile you're actually an easy target for a number of other creatures who'll eventually become your own prey if you survive, from the speedy archeroraptor to the poisonous palaeosaniwa and the various crocodilans lurking in or around rivers and swamps. Your parents will soon see you as food as well. You'd best run away from them and focus on catching orange-headed lizards called chamops and cat-sized marsupials named didelphodons, or look for dead mosasaurs beached on the coast. You can use your scent to locate most preys. As you grow up, you may try your luck against larger game such as ostrich-like ornithomimids, young triceratops, or even an anatosaurus. You need to balance your needs between thirst, hunger and health: an excellent health is required to attract your mate as well as to resist the poisonous bites of palaeosaniwa.
Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event
While Saurian offers some decent fun, its limited content means that you'll experience it all in a matter of hours. You'll soon be able to identify any creature from a distance since all species exist only as adults, outside of the dakotaraptor and the triceratops. You'll never get to confuse a baby anatosaurus with an archeroraptor for instance. The game is missing half of its promised playable dinosaurs: the pachycephalosaurus and tyrannosaurus are in-game but can't be controlled. Several non-playable dinosaurs on the to-do list, such as the ankylosaurus, aren't implemented at all. Two achievements can't be unlocked since they require features that were never developed or completed. Finally, the visuals look rather dated and the UX is poor. There is barely any feedback when you hit or get hit by another creature, which makes combat difficult to read. I've a lot of respect for indie devs trying something new and ambitious, and I'm sure the team did as best as they could with their limited means. Unfortunately the project was robbed of its budget and the content remains incomplete 10 years after its crowdfunding. Saurian will never land, just like the quetzalcoatlus gliding forever in the sky above its game world.
The game is abandoned for years and the devs didn't even give a ♥♥♥♥ to say the reason. And if the reason can't be told then an honest sorry would be fine too, but just leaving without any last words is peak of responsibility and maturuty.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!! It has been abandoned by the Devs and most likely will never see another update. Don't waste your money, go buy The Isle or Path of Titans instead.
Classical dinosaur game rugpull for one of the most boring experiences I have had. Not even worth looking at. (I only have this cause it was included in a humble bundle)
save your money its a dead game for years i have been waiting for it to finish a absolute waste of money
Wouldnt bother buying it, its still unfinished + the devs 100% abandoned it.. 3 years has passed and nothing.. Looked to be a great game at the start.. but now.. not worth your money, better off buying differ dinosaur games.
The concept is there, but overall just really not worth the time and money. Ive had Saurian for around 4 years now, when i first got it it was in early access and only had the Triceratops and baby carnivore playing options - i launched it recently again and surprise surprise, not much has changed. The game is moving at a glacial pace, and while the Devs post some updates every couple of months or so, most of them are miniscule things that bring little to no depth to the game play (aka, grass updates, sky updates, sound updates - nothing that the players will actually care about, oh look here, its a water update! how fun...) The game is poorly optimized, forget about a smooth playing experience unless you have a beefcake of a pc, so even though the graphics are on the lower scale - your game migh spontaneously crash just because the water level in the game decided to rise. The gameplay loop is so simple and bland youll get tired of it in an hour. You hatch as a baby, you eat, sleep, wake up and run around finding food again untill you grow up - when your grown you either form a pack as a Trike or just wander around aimlessly as a carnivore looking for a mate, it all stagnates after that bc the game is mostly empty, theres a glitchy t-rex you can try and fight every now and again but thats about it. Overall - its nowhere near worth 20$, if i knew what the game was actually like id only pay around 3$ for it, maximum of 5$. Save your money guys, maybe come back 20 years later - maybe by then the devs would be close to finishing this so called game.
I've tried, Beasts Of Bermuda and I gotta say this game is slightly better in my opinion. It's a little nicer, calmer, but it's NOT easy. That's what I like about it. They also research a bunch of stuff on dinos, with help from palentologists, it's really fun if your into games like, Wolfquest or The Wilds. I personally think game is awesome, but idk what you think. Give it a try, I thought it was worth it. Also if you are experiencing random flashing lights, go to properties in steam, go to launch codes and type -dx11 . If that doesn't work use -screen-quality low .It forces your game to make it at the lowest quality of the sky so it might look a little weird but trust me, the code is worth it if you find it annoying. Also what I like is when you are a juvenile or hatchling you wanna grow up right? When you are older in-game it feels like your begging for it back. Amazing game tbh.
