One of my favorite games as a kid. So glad to see it remastered
If you have never played it before it is highly recommended to use a guide and you absolutely must have plenty of seperate saves, because the game can let you easly be stuck in a dungeon for ever. Since some dungeons have no way out until you defeat the boss or revert back to a previous save. Also very important: the enemies seem to level with you and if you fought a lot of battles alone (because you did not read a guide for instance), your party members will die easily. True they will level fast, but I still found this had a negative impact on the rest of my playthrough. If you like RPGs and do not mind losing progress due to having to revert back to a previous save, than this is your game! I however do not like to have to revert to previous saves to progress, so I do not recommend it.
The Remastered is awesome and introduces lots of quality of life improvements to this game. The biggest ones are the New Game+ that carries over your items, equipment and arts/skill. Since there are multiple heroes and when you complete one story you don't have to regrind again. If a hero appears in a previous story and you leveled that hero, the hero will appear with the same skills and magic unlocked! There is also a story section that tells you exactly what you need to do next to trigger the next story mission. All this cuts the game padding down significantly. This is a very hard game to recommend to newcomers unfortunately. The graphics and music are good and and it does have a nice charm about it. The main issue is that the overall stories just aren't very exciting to play through. Outside of the main quests, the side quests are (mostly) the same and the areas are mostly all the same so it becomes repetitive. There aren't really much changes to NPC or dialogue either. Rather than look forward to trying out a new perspective with new areas or content, the world just feels mostly empty. As a player, you end up repeating the same optional subquests in each storyline to get the same equipment. Why they couldn't just make this a big giant single game is baffling. I started this series playing Romancing Saga 2 and 3 and I would recommend either of those games over this one first as it's flaws in my opinion just outweigh the pluses even with the updates.
Fun but challenging JRPG to play.
Great revisit from the past.
Okay so let's start off with my negatives first. Understanding how Monster Party members progress their stats requires looking it up. Understanding how Mystics' absorbs work requires keeping a guide open. Besides Realm and Light most of the magic types are niche utility and your mileage will vary for them depending on playthrough and luck. Emilia is a great character but her scenario has some gross and uncomfortable moments that, while never explicit, really have not aged well. On a related note, Roufas is a nothing character who could be removed from the game entirely and nothing would be lost. Okay that's all the negatives. Holy s*** I love this game and every part of it, despite the negatives I listed. I love the world and the way it presents it. I love exploring the regions. I love the characters (except Roufas). I love the story. I love how the combat encounters work. I love the bosses. I love how characters progress and learn new skills, even the obtuse ones like Monsters and Mystics. I love how much freedom you have in building your party. I love how NG+ gives you total control over what you carry over (I personally recommend not carrying over items and only carrying over monster rank if it's a scenario of one of the main party members of your previous game). I even love the difficulty-spike final bosses. I think this is one of the best classic Square Enix RPGs and more people should play it.
