Man, I... I don't know. I would say I would give a mixed rating if it was possible, but I don't think I would, because that's not really accurate to how I feel about it. It's complicated. I'm going to give it a positive review, because overall, I'm glad I spent time with this game. But I was really, really close to giving it a negative review. Tldr; If you're a fan of SaGa and want to try it out, you're gonna get a lot from the game. I don't know if you'll like it, but you won't leave feeling like you got nothing. If you're a fan of old games, and more specifically, really antagonistic and unfriendly design choices, go ahead. I don't regret my time with the game, you probably won't either. The game is exceptionally cool. I can't even imagine playing this when it came out. The sheer amount of ridiculous and easily missable content is staggering. What's also staggering is the amount of progression necessary dialogue being locked behind nearly incomprehnesible places. Take the pubs, for instance. There is an option, every time you open the dialogue with them, to "banter." Almost every single time you try this, you will be met with the same inane dialogue about the pub being busy. Except, there are 2 (kind of 1.5) times throughout the game you absolutely have to banter. The game teaches you that it's a joke option, and then also forces you to do it to progress the plot without so much as even hinting toward it. Take the above example, and replicate it possibly a hundred different ways. There's a minigame, that once started, makes 1 NPC per town change their dialogue until you finish the mini-game (which can easily take hours, especially before you fully understand what you're doing). Most of the time, this doesn't matter. Except, sometimes, those NPCs are progression critical. The boat captains that take you to different places can get chosen. The NPCs that lead you into major side-quests can get chosen. It's so easily avoidable, too. Every single village or town has extraneous NPCs that could have been chosen, yet they randomly make some essential NPCs do it too, I've heard you don't truly need to grind to beat the game. Sure, that is definitely true. It is absolutely not true if you're trying your best to minimize using a guide. You are 10000% going to miss some absolutely crucial pieces of equipment, or spells, and you'll never even know that they existed. If you see anyone claim that they found the aurora area without a guide, they're flat-out lying. It is quite easy to end up in a situation, especially against the final boss, which is leagues and leagues more difficult than every other thing in the game, where grinding is effectively necessary. In fact, I imagine that with minimal guide usage, the vast majority of players will end up in a situation where grinding is necessary, at some point or another. Here's another thing, every single time your party (5 main + 1 reserve) gets updated, your formation reverts back to the default. This doesn't sound like a big deal, except you are actively punished for not constantly changing your party. The vast majority of the game's content is directly locked behind allowing certain NPCs to accompany you at times, and therefore you're heavily incentivized to keep your reserve slot empty in case you talk to an NPC that wants to join you, lest you miss out on content, possibly without even knowing you did. And man, it's just annoying. Especially near the end of the game, you're going to get people coming and going and coming and going and it's such a small thing, but it is so indicative of the blatantly hostile design the game is inundated with. I kind of love this game, you wouldn't think it by reading me complain about it, but it is truly special in a lot of ways that are hard to describe while minimizing spoilers. But there are just, so, so, so many design decisions that even by the time make absolutely no sense at all. Decisions that do nothing but add frustration, or obscurity, in places that had no need or reason for them. I actually find a lot of these things quite endearing, or rather, I did near the start, but by the end, I was just exhausted. The game is lovely in so many ways, yet I can't remember a game so (I think) accidentally mean-spirited. I don't think they were just trying to troll you by annoying you as much as possible, but it certainly does feel that way. It's just bizarre. In so many ways, this game almost feels modern, in an avant garde way. At other points, the game feels more outdated than the original Dragon Quest (or Dragon Warrior, if you prefer). Like, this is a game that simultaneously feels 30 years early, and somehow 10 years late. And the ways it feels revolutionary often merely feel novel, whereas the ways it feels dated even for its time are massively frustrating.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3590397875 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3590397936
If you're on board with the SaGa series, RS3 is an easy recommendation. +Music, as usual +Bosses, as usual +Varied areas, lots of secrets +Generous NG+ function +Menus are a massive improvement over RS2 -Disjointed story and obtuse questlines -Minimal reason to play all 8 characters; gameplay remains mostly identical for 99% of the game -Items, magic, equipment and formation descriptions all severely lacking, though fitting for the series You've probably read about the significant walls players encounter when getting to bosses for the first time. I had a similar experience, but there are so many directions to go in and things to find that it's not as disheartening as it might seem at first. It's also significantly easier to avoid encounters in this compared to RS2, so trudging across maps doesn't get nearly as tedious. Great game! Can't wait for the (hopefully inevitable) remake!

I beat the hell out of this game to there and back when i was in college, but even by 1990s standards is just so bare bones and waste time like no other. Endlessly wondering to find maybe one or two quest to do with no real understanding of how to progress. I bought it for nostalgia reasons and just got bored and tired of 4 hours of no quest, even after opening up the world a little bit.
I spent 90 hours with this game, and it blows. After the opening, you will have to scrounge for things to do. You can't explore the world - you have to unlock fast travel destinations by having an NPC tell you about them. If you do manage to find a quest and complete it, your reward will be a small sum of money or a recruitable character. These characters hardly differ at all, with progression only existing in terms of gear and weapon skills transferable between party characters. Sadly, the money stops having an impact early on as well, because shops will almost never stock more than 8 items, and most of them share inventory. Fans try to say this is a "JRPG sandbox". Sure, if that sandbox has no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sand. There is no leveling up, no overall story, and no reward for spending time here. Apparently some of the quests have different dialog if you pick other options, but that's not even close to enough to get me to play this again.
Thank God for the absolute angel who graced us with the 60 fps mod & an enhanced UI closer to the original SNES UI. I didn't touch this remaster for years because of the locked 30 and mobile UI. Mod works just fine on steam deck.
