About

A classic tactical RPG returns! The second game in the main Front Mission storyline is finally available outside of Japan for the first time.
FRONT MISSION 2: Remake blends intense strategy with a deep and involved storyline.
12 years have passed since the second Huffman conflict. The impoverished People's Republic of Alordesh has been suffering a severe economic decline ever since the war ended. In June 2102, soldiers of the Alordesh Army rise up and, led by Ven Mackarge, declare independence from the O.C.U. (Oceania Cooperative Union).

Ash, an O.C.U. soldier, manages to survive the ensuing battle, but Alordesh is completely overrun by the Revolutionary Army. Ash and his surviving teammates infiltrate Alordesh's chaotic underground in an attempt to escape the country. However, they soon discover that there is a huge conspiracy behind the coup.
In FRONT MISSION 2: Remake, the perspective switches between three characters: Ash, Lisa, and Thomas, creating a worldview that goes beyond a simple dichotomy between good and evil.
FRONT MISSION 2: Remake preserves the mature story, strategic turn-based combat, and Wanzer customization options of the original. Enjoy the revitalized classic with updated visuals and new features and enhancements!

I will start by stating that I am a huge fan of the Front mission series, I started playing since front mission 3 I played 1 using snes emulators and traslations a long time ago, and it was very primitive, very different of what I playted before (i started with 3, and had played 4 and 5 before 1) Nevertheless, it was understandable, its an old game, so even if it was not the best experience, i finished it This brings me back to this game, FM2, i was never able to find this game in emulation, so I was exited about the remake, and the remake itself its decent, basically its the same game, with some very few improvements, and a graphic overhaul And this is the sad part, i dont know if I can recommend it, this game is slow, boring, and messy, long range weapons are very useless, the difficulty its all over the place, the aerial enemies are a pain, and its not worth to equip AA weapons, many things in combat have no proper balance, its not an enjoyable game, however, nothing of this is the remake fault, this is because of the original design from long time ago So i guess, if you love the Front Mission universe like I do, then this is kind of a must, but if you dont care, then just skip to FM3, 3 its a lot better in every regard This remake its pretty much the same as emulation, with better graphics, and I guess, more convenience since you can just install it trough steam, but what you are getting its basically the same game, this can be good or bad depending on your point of view, i got it during a sale, and for me, I cant complain, lots of hours, got what was promised Its just that the original game was not as fun as the others in the series, even the story, its not bad, and it kind ofpredicted AI, but its not the greatest either, the tone can be really serious and then very childish, again, not exactly bad but not good either, there are 31 missions, plus some secrets, but around 16 for me it stopped being enjoyable, the last missions for me were basically grinding, you have a New game+ option, but honestly, i dont think you want to play everything again, but at least, you get many hours of game if thats what you like If you want to know this franchise, better start with 4 for something easier, or start with 3 if you want something good and complex, 2 is not a good entry, this is basically an old game that will take you back in time, some missions that will take unnnecesary long time, the weapons setups are not user friendly and you spend lots of time in there, if you dont mind then get this one, and I hope you are as patient as I was
The last patch broke the game. Fix it.
Okay, I really didn’t want to believe it, but it’s bad.
I’m a fan of Front Mission 1, but I had never played Front Mission 2 before. I was surprised to see the mixed reviews for FM2 on Steam before buying the game. How could that be? How could the sequel to such a great game be that bad? That’s what I thought. Then I decided to buy the game, bite the bullet, and push myself to finish it no matter what it took. I was very optimistic, and my will was strong. But man… it really is bad… First, let’s talk about the story. It starts quite well, we’re under attack, something goes wrong, and we’re losing comrades quickly. You start investing in who you think is the main character, and then… the story cuts! Suddenly, you’re following a completely different group with new characters, doing their own thing and then... it cuts again! Every time this happens, you lose focus on the characters. Sometimes characters just leave a group or get left behind, and then suddenly show up in another group later. This continues until the mid-to-late game, when everyone finally joins the same group and the constant switching stops. It’s messy, and you easily lose track of the main goal of the story. Each group has its own objective, one is just trying to survive, one wants to uncover the truth, another wants revenge, but it all feels disconnected. After finishing the game and taking a few days off, I can’t even remember what most of the characters look like. Even now, while writing this review, I barely remember anything. Unlike FM1, where you at least remember the main character’s face or even the color of their starting Wanzer. The constant group switching doesn’t just hurt the story, it hurts the gameplay too. Every time the group changes, all your upgraded Wanzers and trained pilots are gone because they’re not with you anymore. Instead of feeling progression, it feels like a reset every time. Not to mention the equipment variety in this game is very limited. There’s not much to choose from, and new parts are rarely available. Compared to FM1, where reaching a new town usually gives you three to five new Wanzer models, in FM2 you’re lucky if you get even one new model. After 60 hours, I finally finished the game with 100% achievements, and I’ll probably never play it again. Why the thumbs up then? Well, the game isn’t broken and it didn’t crash on me. And it might be an okay game if you’ve never played FM1 to compare it to. So… yeah.

It's fine. The translation (which, as I understand, was overhauled completely at some point since release) is surprisingly enjoyable to read and, crucially, complete. It plays much faster than the original too - between the near lack of loading segments and the snappier animations, the gameplay itself feels simply better. The rest is the rest. Portraits don't really do Jun's style justice. There was no attempt to reinvent the original's panoramic animations. Presentation feels generally cheap (fonts, environment). A new update broke things, but it was rolled back promptly. Not the remake Tsuchida's work deserved but they tried (are trying?). Probably going to enjoy this more than the FM3 remake for the cast\setting alone.
QoL improvements from remake 1 are totally absent. Controlls are terrible, UI is terrible and the overall feel is like remake of Shin Megami Tensei 3 remake in Unity engine. Even with the discount this game is "outdated" more than 8bit game, not worth the money
Playing FM 2 after 1 shows how weak this game in the series was. You'll find nearly nothing that made 1 great, instead you'll find many ideas that make the game slow and unfun. Story, characters, mechanics, everything. While the devs can't be blamed for that if they wanted the game to be like the original, they have made unskippable cutscenes that stay waaaay longer than they should, making the game even slower. Pass if you aren't a fan of the series.
I don't really understand why this is so overwhelmingly negative. I'm coming into this after finishing FM1 last year and I have no experience with the original games. This is more Front Mission and that's what I was looking for. I don't think the cast and gameplay were that exceptional in 1 either, but it's a pleasant SPRG with a military setting. Some of the mechanics and systems are a bit archaic and feel more like bloat, and I don't particularly care for them. The Ace training mission, arena combat and all the random one liners people in bars give you are a bit whatever. The network apparently unlocks a bunch of things but it's not interesting at all. All in all, do you want more FM flavored SPRG? This is great. If you're looking for Final Fantasy Tactics, Battletech or Super Robot Wars, that's not it.
