Story was perfectly paced and amazingly written. Characters were beautifully written. Music was Mitsuda with a bit of Uematsu, which is all you need to know to define its quality. Visuals were amazing. And the gameplay was peak. Go play it right now, even if you don't like turn based RPGs. Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece. Second best game ever so far after AAI2
I can only say great things about this game. The music and art are so pretty. The story is brilliant along with the many expansive side quests which provide so many ends to explore. Those are complimented by the cast of characters which are all really unique but fit together so well. Switching between the cast during long hauls without saves feels really good. I do think a lot of the game is quite easy but I still had fun every part of the game. So much of my 30 hour save was spent exploring with a world which responds so much to you. There's so many little details with the main mechanic of the game which makes you smile!!! so much!!! The game fills you with a really warm feeling and its such a nice journey to go on. Its really hard to say anything negative about the game.
To clarify, I highly recommend this game. I do not however recommend this port on Steam. It is very buggy, resulting in a lot of crashes. 14hrs in and I've had the game crash about as many times. Occasionally sound just decides not to work necessitating the reboot of the game. The HD resolution vs the original doesn't change much. The terrain/background seems to have a hard time keeping up with you if you run. Fun game, play it on the DS.
I do not think any video game is perfect, but Chrono Trigger is as close as it gets.
TL;DR: Game good. Port bad. Chrono Trigger is a timeless classic. Great story with wonderful pacing, peak 2D graphics, fun and simple tech/combo system, immersive exploration with no random encounters. Relatively short length ensures that the game does not overstay its welcome (unlike most modern RPGs). Despite the updates, there's still plethora of issues with this particular version of the game-- blurry scaling of the in-game font, graphics and sound being wrong at places, music or SFX cutting off or missing in a number of scenes, random crashes, gamepad bugging out, unexplainable slowdowns and more. While I applaud Square Enix for bringing this game to modern platforms, greater care should be taken when preserving classic games. As it is, I cannot recommend this version of the game. If possible, play either the SNES version or the DS version instead.
Fun Game. Crashes a lot, but there is a bookmark function that kicks in that is like a quick save of when you go through doors and ♥♥♥♥. It is kind of annoying, but this is an easy way for me to play on a couch and also on my steamdeck. Had this game on SNES, DS, PS1...Vita?? who knows. So fun, just the crashing is annoying
I've always loved Chrono Trigger, since the Snes it's been one of my favorite games. But this port is a dumpster fire with stuttering and crashes, weird lag randomly and a complete lack of developer interaction for years now, so most of the player base is forced to use mods or SpecialK to smooth out the game play which is ridiculous when it should be the responsibility of the development team to fix their releases.
how would you write a review for Mario 64? For Ocarina of Time? For Coca-Cola? For DOOM? CHRONO TRIGGER is that type of game, where most games are derivative of it. That being said u gotta be willing to deal with some old game nonsense(TM) if playing in the modern age
Great game, not so great port. Crashed a lot, but luckily it has a nice auto save.. So I guess it really depends on if you're a glass half full kinda person. "Well I beat the boss and the game crashed." vs "Well I beat the boss and the game crashed, luckily I can jump back just before the fight instead of the last save point." I personally thought it was annoying af.
