The Act 3 prison sequence is an awful (and buggy!) collection of the worst tropes of the past few decades: forced imprisonment, taking your gear away, forced hand to hand brawl (which becomes bugged if you die due to sharkman invincibility), prison escape stealth sequence (in an ARPG? Really?). Bugged door to your cell that does not open if you die in the escape sequence. A game-ruining experience.
“Alestorm?” — “Yes.” Piracy's a crime and crime doesn't pay And we go home poor at the end of the day But I'd rather live my life in rags Than be chained to a desk with a wife that's a hag! We live each day like there's nothing to lose But a man has needs and the need is booze They say all the best things in life are free So give all your beer and your rum to me We are here to drink your beer And steal your rum at the point of a gun Your alcohol to us will fall 'Cause we are here to drink your beer We are here to drink your beer And steal your rum at the point of a gun Your alcohol to us will fall 'Cause we are here to drink your beer Drink, drink, drink, drink Drink, drink, drink, drink Drink, drink, drink, drink Drink, drink, drink Dafuq, why is this game better than most games today? On top of that, it’s made by a single developer. Better then "Path Of Exile" ,"Diabo III & IV" . This is what Skull & Bones should’ve been, honestly! It has too many controls and mechanics but that's ok.
A brilliant new take on the aRPG/Diablo-like genre! The second-by-second gameplay loop of shooting and looting is very satisfying, there is great enemy and level variety, and the game sprinkles in enough humour to set the tone apart from the usual grim themes of these types of games. The other unique feature is ship combat missions, which takes some getting used to but break up the gameplay to keep things interesting, And anyway, you can't have a pirate game without ships and cannons. Lastly, I am a fan of the instant selling of loot, with no need to return to town.
Rum & Gun? More like Bore & Dom. The combat isn't satisfying and there are terrible gameplay choices that make playing this game tedious. You have a reload mechanic that slows you down to a crawl and with the typical reload mini-game of pressing the button once the slider passes a point on the reload bar. This can be turned off in the options but reloading shouldn't be a core gameplay mechanic and it is, since most weapons so far have like 10 ammo. Sure, real powder weapons could not be reloaded by changing the magazine or inserting a clip but this is just unnecessary realism. Shooting feels terrible. All weapons are relatively slow projectile weapons and with enemies running all over the place and the game being 3D most of your shots miss, sometimes even at point blank range. Even if you put your cursor on the target, shots might miss because you're shooting at a crab or a flying insect and the shots go above or beneath the target so you spend your time running in circles, trying to hit something. AOE weapons exist but they use a lot of ammo and the damage and range are abysmal. The same goes for melee that also sometimes misses for some reason. There is a charge attack that you can use by pressing dodge and the direction you're facing while attacking but it's cumbersome to use. There are also spells that you get from socketing runes into weapons but I haven't found any use for them. The maps are boring. They all look the same and you go from one enemy group to the next and there is never a challenge, even on hard. Keep moving and shooting, move to the next group. The loot is uninteresting and collecting items is a chore. You get lots of weapons and runes that you can socket into them but the stats they give you are pretty meaningless and all the weapons are projectile weapons of sorts. A pistol that shoots one shot, one that fires a burst of 2, one that shoots cannon balls, one that shoots two cannon balls... Collecting them without running over each and everyone of them is done by playing your instrument which also heals allies but it's a toggle and if in the heat of battle you want to quickly pick up rum (health) or powder, you often end up playing your fiddle and kicking instead of shooting which is a mechanic that is useful exactly when? That's right, never. There is a massive skill tree but skills are randomized. On level up you get a choice of four skills that you can select from or reroll, like in a roguelike but this mechanic has no place in an ARPG. There are items that make your level up give a skill point that you can spend freely but WHY? What is the point? Let me select my build. Why do I have to spend money or rely on random drops to freely choose talents? Not to mention that some talents are utterly useless. Flat damage reduction by 1 or increasing damage by 8. My weapons do 300 damage and I'm taking 100 damage hits and that's just at the beginning of the game. Well, I suppose I'm dealing 308 damage and take 99 damage now. Whoopie doo. Then there are bugs or maybe design choices that are not communicated. Rune sockets can be added to items but not to all. This gun can have a socket, the other cannot. A gun with a socket cannot get a second one while my shirt can. The system behind it? Who knows? The only game-breaking bug so far was that a completely unnecessary boat that traverses a blood pit of like 5 meters spawned on land and I had to replay not only this but also the previous map. You can't just run past enemies because the level exit only works out of combat so I had to kill everything all over again with these terrible combat mechanics. There are auto-generated treasure maps in ASCII format that match nothing of what the real map looks like. I tried to guess a spot that vaguely resembled whatever the ASCII map tried to show me, only to find out that my shovel is single-use and I had to buy a new one and replay the map. Of course the treasure map disappears when you leave the map and you have to find a new one. XD marks the spot. I nearly forgot to mention the terrible default key bindings. Weapons are selected by numbers and the first weapon is on 0. Hey dev, take a look at a keyboard. Where is 0? The same goes for confirmation which is done with Enter that is about as far away from WASD as 0. Reloading is done with R and the mini game also uses R. Try to run from enemies with WASD while repeatedly pressing R at the right time to reload your gun. Left mouse would've been the obvious choice. At least you can rebind this. Also everyone has an Indian accent for some reason. I thought this was a pirate game? Thumbs down says I.
This game is aboslutley incredible for the price point. One of the first games ive played in a while that scratched the itch that diablo 3 left in me. The setting feel really well stylized and the voice lines and interactions are impressive...
Rum & Gun is a Diablo-like that gets a handful of things right and a lot more things wrong, with some outright nonsensical design choices and gameplay that gets dull due to lack of variety much faster than other games in the genre. Unlike Diablo or Path of Exile, Rum & Gun doesn't have classes. Instead, it has a giant perk tree that you get four random choices from each time you level up. Half the perks are absolutely useless: there's one that reduces damage by a flat 1 (in a game where enemies can do hundreds of damage in the end-game) and another that adds 8 damage to attacks that cause stun (in a game where enemies can have tens of thousands of HP). Most of the good perks feel like a tax rather than a bonus: the most important branches are one that stops reflected bullets from instakilling you and a second that reduces virtually all incoming damage by 75% at higher levels. The game throws out the random perk mechanic a few hours in when you get access to a cheap item that lets you choose your perk from the tree instead of getting four random choices. You might notice that I didn't mention skills anywhere in there, and that's because Rum & Gun doesn't really have them. You can slot runes into your gear to get them, but they're not very good and generally less efficient than simply running around holding down the mouse button with two pistols equipped. This is one of the things that this game does poorly: where Diablo has AOE skills all over the place, Rum & Gun just.. doesn't. There are AOE weapons, but you're very limited for ammo and they don't do a lot of damage even at high levels. There's also no real build diversity. While there are a couple branches of the perk tree that boost summons, summons for the most part don't scale well and generally aren't viable. Most of the skills are dedicated to eventually dual-wielding pistols. Then comes the annoying part, which is gearing up. Rum & Gun has a system where you have a maximum loot level that will drop, which can be boosted by buying an item from a shop that boosts "curse" by one level. Curse increases enemy HP and damage, and can only be removed one level at a time by dying. I don't know why the developer couldn't have had a slider or something for curse once you unlock it (even if you still had to pay for it) but it's irritating when you want to clear the game but you're on 120 curse and enemies barely take damage because gear largely stops scaling at a certain point. I'd get Path of Exile over this any day.
A damn fine A-Arrrr-PG. Sure, there's small snags like unclear keywords, a wildly lopsided skill tree, clunky boat steering, and occasional deaths out of nowhere. But especially for $5 it's a ton of fun running around with double pistols, a hand cannon, or just slamming an anchor into people. Spells are evocative and the rune system is a neat take on the Diablo gems. The endgame is a little shallow but the game itself is a fun romp.
Rum & Gun is a combination of a twin-stick shooter and action RPG about PIRACY! ... honestly it's not all that great, being a lot of Kiting Simulator 2024, but it was fun enough for the 13.5 hours it lasted, and it's only $5. Unfortunately it has a lot of gimmicky maps especially as you move along in the game (ship combat maps, tower defense maps, etc.) and they are mostly bad. Some of them, like the first tower defense, are OK, while others - the MOBA-like one especially - were stupid. The story is overtly silly, which is fine and probably what you should expect from the title. This is a... limited recommendation, I guess. It's pretty skippable, but it's also not a bad game.
