Tbh this game gets a lot more hate then it disserves. I'm not saying this is the best RE game, but this game imo still is worth checking out, cause it can be a fun time. Especially with friends. I also find the mercenaries mode to be a blast. So if you can try this game it's pretty fun.

This game is not a "hidden gem". It's not "over hated". It is properly rated as a middling mediocre action game with the thinnest attempt to be "horror". The QTE's are OBNOXIOUS, they are everywhere, you can never escape them and the number of insta-death QTE's is beyond frustrating. Not to mention all of the spectacle of the game is caked with them, ensuring that you will never truly enjoy the slack jawed WOW factor of a scene, instead your spinning the stick for the 100th time in the past 5 minutes or holding the trigger to accelerate the poorly controlling vehicle trying not to die and be forced to do it all again. The level layouts are mindless, RE4 seems like Skyrim in comparison to the level of hallways in this game. While the production value of this game far exceeds something like RE5, making environments very nice to look at, that production value doesn't make up for the fact that you are blazing through them so fast that none of them leave a lasting impression. Not a single combat arena comes close to even the starting Village fight of RE4. The story and writing is inconsistent and all over the place. Narratively kneecapping Chris Redfield's character for the sake of a single cutscene where he and Leon aim their guns at each other (admitted to by devs in an interview) only for the real Chris to comeback the instant the scene is done, sucks. What was the point, that SINGULAR cutscene didn't make up for 3 chapters of a ruined Chris. Leon cant decide if he's a tortured soul witnessing "racoon all over again", a love sick puppy chasing Ada, or a wise cracking action hero. They try to have him be all of them but it never feels natural, Thank Wesker they figured out his character in the remakes and 9. Jake was a dumb idea from the jump, his casual misogyny, antagonistic relationship with Chris and Leon (characters we actually like), and eye-rolling discount DMC Dante personality make me so glad he's never returned. Piers is cool. Helena and Sherry are barely used as characters, Sherry gets damseled repeatedly to make Jake look more like a badass and to try and sell the laughably thin "romance" between them. Helena's plot is a joke that will make sense when we get to the cathedral, and afterward she exists to tell us that Leon might have some feelings for Ada, thanks Captain Obvious. And Ada is there too. Some of the enemies like the Gas bag, the Swarm, and the flesh chainsaw guy are cool but they get buried underneath a mountain of Zombies that are slow and uninteresting with action this fast. As well as J'avo who use guns and cover, feeling like enemies that fell in from another franchise until they mutate but even that is cool the first couple times but by the end of the game they are tedious and annoying more so than fun to fight. Pair that with a horrendous cover mechanic and guns that lack the impact to feel different and unique and you'll never find yourself truly enjoying the strategy or level layouts of the combat. You'll have some fun at first but by the end of the 2nd of three 6-7 hour campaigns of the same monotonous combat the fun factor of suplexing a J'avo starts to wear very thin. "Oh but the combat has so much depth the game doesn't tell you about, you'll get it once you jump into mercenaries..." I appreciate that people can have a good time in a side mode to this bloated identity crisis, but the level layouts and enemy AI/variety of the MAIN 20-25 HOUR GAME do NOT incentivize using or learning any of that. And even when it comes to mercenaries, if enjoyment only comes after hours and hours of messing with the systems to eventually arrive at a somewhat deep combat system. GO PLAY DEVIL MAY CRY, GOD OF WAR, OR TITANFALL. Anyone telling people that this game is a secret masterpiece of action game design has either never played good ones or is lying. In the recap shown to media for the, at the time of this review, upcoming Code Veronica remake Capcom displayed RE1 Remake to start, moved to RE2 Remake to establish Leon and Claire. And then to show Leon's story they showed RE4 Remake and RE9 Requiem. No RE6 in sight, thank god. This game was a cynical attempt by the Capcom higher ups to turn Resident Evil into Call of Duty. It's not a passion project or even a creatively motivated addition. It was made to abandon the horror, abandon the soul, and abandon the fans of Resident Evil in exchange for Modern Warfare money. And thankfully it failed, if you enjoy it, enjoy it, but it doesn't need to be defended, revived, or sanitized. It needs to be melted down and remade into something actually resembling Resident Evil.
