I played Obscure back on the PS2 at its original release and remember being pleasently surprised. This game utilises "fixed camera angles" like the classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill games but mixes it up with a cheesy high school teen slasher flick story, and combining gameplay from both franchises. This survival horror has alot of the classic elements you would expect; variety of actual puzzles, limited supplies, dark and tense atmosphere, unique monster designs and since this is a co-op experience, reliability on your partner. Speaking of partners each different character you can play as, and switch to at any time, have their own special abilities - so it is advisable to use different characters in the appropriate situation, I think this adds depth to the gameplay. The story is cheesy, not serious, but there is a charm to it. It also features my favourite "game fetish" storyline in which everything is normal at first, but slowly devulges into the horror you came to expect, and you have to fight and learn the mystery behind how this all happened. The combat is basic, there is auto-lock, power attacks and standard attacks, but that's all this game needs I feel. The good thing is that the controls are easy to learn and complexity is not needed here. Unfortunately, for me, the music is quickly forgettable so don't expect some Akira Yamaoka level of quality here. That being said, what I hear fits what is happening, just that it isn't something you would listen to casually. I recommend this game to fans of the classic RE and SH games, and looking for their fix on survival horror with some original concepts to it. However, this game was originially released back in 2005, so expect some outdated mechanics compared to modern horror. Also, this PC port is a re-release of an older port but adds native widescreen support and full controller support, among general optimisations to work on modern Windows systems. The only bummer is that there is still no mouse support. I should also mention the game does indeed run at 60fps.

We need more Co-op survival horror games.
"There's nothing left for us here." 😞 - Josh
hmm. so at first when i learned about this game i was like "Obscure looks like a pretty cool obscure game for being such an obscure game". now after playing this obscurely obscure title, its still obscured to as to why this obscure game is so obscure. while the game might be obscure, it doesn't deserve to be obscure, and not because obscure is the name either, but because its actually really fun! if you enjoy RE1 like games with a comedy/horror vibe but also pretty challenging like a true survival horror game should be, then you should really enjoy this game! this is probably one the most obscure obscure games that are obscure for reasons that yet remain obscured to me. this is an obscured hidden gem!
the embodiment of the 2000s
never played this game before, but experienced some odd form of nostalgia. it's like some non-existent memory from the childhood arose in my head: i'm sitting in my tiny room playing this on playstation 2, surrounded by cassettes and posters. this is definitely the most naive game i ever played, but it's so imbued with the spirit of the times that you want to feel it again and again. the atmosphere is so viscous and ominous but very homely and cozy at the same time. lots of games today try to capitalize on nostalgia, but this particular feeling is absolutely impossible to recreate now. you can't reflect that surrounding reality now because it doesn't exist anymore. i think you can create this type of thing only unintentionally.
Honestly, that is the exact kind of game that makes you wonder why more modern co-op horror games are so allergic to just being fun. ObsCure is rough, clunky, awkward, and the camera occasionally behaves like it has been personally betrayed by geometry, but the actual idea is brilliant: Two-player survival horror. Teen horror movie tone. Limited resources. Character swapping. Actual co-op tension instead of “one player is the main character and the other is a decorative backpack.” The camera is absolutely its biggest crime. Fixed angles plus co-op plus enemies lunging out of corners is basically the game saying, “What if visibility was optional?” But once you accept that, it has such a good PS2-era horror vibe. It feels like The Faculty, Resident Evil, and a school detention nightmare got shoved into one weird little cult classic. Jumping straight into ObsCure 2 makes sense too. It is more polished in some ways, messier in others, because apparently consistency would have been too generous. But if you liked the first one for the co-op chaos, puzzle solving, stupid horror energy, and “why are we still in this building?” mood, the second one is absolutely worth playing. Hidden gem is the right phrase. Not perfect. Not even close. But memorable, playable, and weirdly charming. The kind of game that deserved more attention instead of being buried while the industry spent twenty years discovering brown military shooters and crafting menus.
There are some games you remember because they were good, and then there are games you remember because they became part of a specific time in your life. Obscure is one of those games for me. I used to play this on PS2 and absolutely loved it. Back then, I don’t think I could fully explain why I loved it so much. I just knew there was something about it — the school setting, the characters, the music, the horror, the feeling of exploring those dark hallways — that completely pulled me in. It had such a distinct atmosphere that even years later, I could still remember how it felt to play it! Replaying it now, all these years later, I expected nostalgia to do most of the work. Instead, I realized something: Obscure was genuinely ahead of its time. The atmosphere is still incredible. Leafmore High feels like an actual place rather than just a backdrop for a horror game. The empty classrooms, abandoned corridors, underground areas, strange experiments, flickering lights — everything creates this perfect early-2000s teen horror atmosphere. It feels like someone took the horror movies I grew up watching and somehow turned one into a playable experience. And then there’s the soundtrack. I remembered loving it, but hearing it again made me realize just how much of Obscure’s identity comes from its music. Olivier Derivière created something haunting, melancholic and strangely beautiful. The choir, the eerie ambient tracks, the emotional themes — the music doesn’t just accompany the game, it gives it a soul. There are moments where you’re simply walking through the school and the soundtrack makes you feel this strange combination of fear, sadness and nostalgia. It has stayed in my head for years without me even realizing it. Even the gameplay surprised me. Playing it today made me appreciate how ambitious some of its ideas actually were. Having a group of teenagers with different abilities, being able to switch between them, choosing who accompanies you, solving puzzles together, and knowing that characters could actually die and the story would continue without them — that was such a cool concept, especially for its time. And the co-op! I remember playing it with my cousin! A survival horror game where someone could literally sit beside you, grab another controller and experience the nightmare with you? On the PS2? It feels even more special now, when couch co-op itself has become much less common. Even the light mechanic was clever. The idea of using light as an actual weapon against the creatures fit the story perfectly while giving the game its own identity instead of simply trying to imitate Resident Evil or Silent Hill. You could tell the developers wanted Obscure to be its own thing. But what I appreciate most now is its personality. Obscure is unapologetically a product of its era, and I mean that as the biggest compliment. The teenage characters, the dialogue, the clothes, the music, the high-school horror-movie energy — it captures the early 2000s in a way that would be almost impossible to recreate intentionally today without it feeling forced. Yes, some parts have aged. The controls can be awkward, the dialogue can be cheesy, and there are moments where you can absolutely feel that you’re playing a PS2 game. But somehow, those things only made me love it more. Because underneath all of that is a game with so much heart. Replaying Obscure as an adult felt strangely emotional. I wasn’t only revisiting Leafmore High; I was revisiting the version of myself who first played it. I remembered sitting in front of my PS2, completely absorbed in this strange, creepy little world, having no idea that years later I would come back to it and appreciate it even more. And sometimes you discover that you were right to love them all along. Obscure was one of those games. It was creative, atmospheric, ambitious, beautifully scored and far more innovative than I understood when I was younger. It took the survival-horror formula and gave it the personality of a 2000s teen horror movie, while introducing ideas that still feel surprisingly fresh today. I went back expecting a nostalgic PS2 game. I came away thinking, how did this game not become bigger than it was? Obscure deserved more recognition. It deserved more sequels. It deserved to become one of those survival-horror franchises everyone still talks about. But maybe there’s something fitting about the fact that it didn’t. It remained exactly what its name suggests: obscure. A strange, beautiful, creepy little PS2 gem that some of us were lucky enough to discover growing up.
This classic ps2 horror game is a must play for survival horror fans, it's not the best in the genre but it's a short sweet and fun romp through the sea of ps2 survival horror games.
