I have enjoyed this game tremendously, especially when I made a decision not to google any strategies or gaming tips for playing. Mars is a harsh environment and it has been super fun to ♥♥♥♥ up and find out.
Per Aspera isn't great in my opinion but certainly not bad. Its good enough that I finished the main campaign (about 20hrs). Other users said it well; this game is a visual novel that acts like a colony builder. Most of the time playing this game (for me) was on max speed watching Netflix on the side waiting for certain events to happen from story-related moments to visual updates to Mars as you terraform. My biggest gripe with the game is late game builder management. Others have said it better than I can so I won't beat a dead horse here but in the late game its much easier to brute force 10x the amount of workers and other buildings you needs, carpeting them across you map and just 16x the game speed to wait things out. The late game was terribly boring.

For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Watching the credits roll now, so this is going to be a fresh take. I didn't know what to expect. My only base-building experience is in something like Starcraft I/II and I am also a fan of Dyson Sphere Program as a space factory game. This is super simplified in terms of factories, but with targets and a story. It is constant expansion and resource gathering, while progressing through a simple tech tree (much smaller than even Civ or something). I think I enjoyed the game overall? By the end I was just building over and over and grinding to hit a target. It will probably be the only time I play through. The story is interesting, but somewhat predictable. I feel like more could be done with the research outposts other than some basic info card about previous Mars expeditions. I suppose going through a second time to try to be more efficient could be intriguing, but the base-building is pretty repetitive. Blueprinting would be helpful. I read about a mod that makes worker hubs redundant and that other buildings act as hubs and this could be a major improvement. I had over 500 worker hubs at the end and I think my building max was 2000. Based on my traffic screen, I could have done more. Why can't I select all of a type of building? I have to go hunting around to find them. Maybe I over-generated resources and research. Hard to know. tl;dr: Overall, worthwhile, decent story. Mechanics could be a little better. I am not itching to start over anytime soon.
I logged so much time in this game not because it is good, but because it was the new colony sim in my life at a time when I needed many hours of the kind of escapism that only colony sims and 4x can give me (Stellaris also racked up a lot of much more deserved play hours during this period of my life). This game is pretty shallow as a sim, and has a pretty dumb story with bad voice acting. It does scale in a satisfying way, but if you like things that scale just for the sake of scaling, play cookie clicker.
This game is a slow burn. It hits a sweet spot for me when I need something that is distracting and satisfying without requiring an excess of micromanagement. I can focus in, build and plan and expand -- but I can also look away for a few minutes without tanking my whole game. I also like that there are different ways to play through the story. I've had the game for quite a while, but I'm starting a new playthrough tonight, because I haven't done them all yet. (I'm also a little compulsive about things like this; your mileage on this aspect may vary.)
Honestly, I had a blast with this game. Finished my first playthrough not long ago. I was itching for a casual building game and I felt right at home. It had been a while since a game was able to get me this excited. Getting water, seeing the plants grow, I was really proud. The game keeps you on edge with attacks, the amount of ressources available(can be fixed with mod) and with your own ability to generate too much O2 because you like seeing this grass the and trees grow(which will in turn allow Mars to burn to ashes). Some people have commented on replayability, I can sort of understand that. You always terraform Mars. It's the planet itself so it doesn't change. However, there are multiple endings to explore if you play the story mode which, to be honest, blew my mind. Overrall, it's a really good game in my opinion and I'll come back to it after some time I'm sure.
I really really really want to like this game, but it just always grinds to a slog every time I sit down to give it another shot. I think the developers are so close to striking gold, but not quite.
