Payday 3 is finally in the state it should’ve launched in, the game has genuinely improved. Bottom line: Payday 3 does a few things better than Payday 2, but Payday 2 still outperforms it in almost everything else.
I played the beta and didn't like it at the time due to severe connection issues, but honestly, this game is improving a lot. If the developers keep at it, this could easily become the next No Man's Sky style comeback story. The good: -The heists are cool and have really good theme variations. -The animations are top-tier; movement and actions feel incredibly fluid, realistic, and well-done. -The new gameplay mechanics are a very welcome change of pace. -The new assault system feels way more natural and realistic. For example, when the police first arrive, they actually try to negotiate with you, unlike Payday 2 where a Bulldozer would teleport into the bank two seconds after the alarm rang. -There aren't many masks available yet, but the designs they do have look great. -The objectives feel way less repetitive because they stopped overusing those constant drill repairs from Payday 2. The bad: -The game needs more heists. There are currently fewer than 20, and for a game built entirely around replayability, you need way more variation. -Progression feels completely lacking. The devs still seem clueless on how to handle it, and adding an infamy or "prestige" system with exclusive rewards would be a massive improvement. -There are only four difficulty levels and they aren't particularly challenging, so the game needs more bite. A "realistic" mode with fewer cops but much higher enemy damage would be perfect. -There are too few special unit types; adding some new special enemies would really help mix up the combat loop. It definitely lacks some features when compared directly to Payday 2, but we have to remember that Payday 2 benefited from over 10 years of post-launch updates. That said, I do think the devs should drop some free missions to build goodwill, especially since this game costs way more than its predecessor did at launch. Even after the price reduction, it’s still double the price of the original (at least here in Brazil). Overall, it's a really fun game with great foundational additions. The environments are more interactive, and the stealth mechanics are deeper and more realistic. It’s an easy recommendation for fans of the previous games or anyone looking for a solid co-op shooter. Just don't make the mistake of expecting "Payday 2.5."
There are two things I absolutely love about Payday 3--the core gunplay and the first-person animations. Every other system is significantly worse than Payday 2. Bless the animation team. I absolutely adore that there is an animation for the majortity of interations in the game. Reload animations of guns added after release are spectacular as well. My favourite has the be the Judge shotgun, where 2 shells get stuck and the character has to flick them out with their finger. It's a stupid animation, but it has a lot of charm. The skill tree is terribly short-sighted. Every throwable has a dedicated section that only affects that specific throwable, which will harm the viability of future throwables. The tree is also grouped into 5 arbitrary tabs, a carry-over from PD2 that does nothing except make the tree more confusing to navigate. Why can't all the weapon-type specific trees all be placed together in 1 tab? Then all the throwables in another, then deployables, stealth and loud. Sure, there's some overlapping skills, like a stealth tree also giving adrenaline, a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ health buff, but it would certainly be better than the way skills are organized now. Skills are also much less interesting than in PD2. Inspire, jokers, berserker, frenzy, overkill aced, crits, body expertise--PD3 has none of interesting things like that. Instead, you'll find over-engineered ♥♥♥♥ like +2% accuracy for every shot hit and -2% accuracy for every shot missed. What the ♥♥♥♥ happened to gain some accuracy with a suppressor attached? Why is weapon accuracy the ♥♥♥♥ energy is being spent complicating? The armor plate sytem is a complete failure. Go into any loud lobby, and all anyone runs is Impact plates, which use the armor regeneration from PD2. Adaptive plates are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ useless because on the hardest difficulty, enemies can break a plate in like 2 shots in less than a second. You poke your head out a second too long and ♥♥♥♥, that regenerating adaptive plate ain't doing ♥♥♥♥ no more. It doesn't help that getting hit barely has any feedback, so enjoy your eyes being glued to that bottom left of the screen to make sure you haven't hit your starbreeze mandated tea break yet. The weapon customization system is a wordy mess. The weapon stat bars barely help. There's ♥♥♥♥ like horizontal recoil, vertical recoil, overall recoil, initial gunkick, overall gunkick, whatever else. Why doesn't the game just show all these stats? Why are these just relegated to ambiguous wall of text? How hard can it be to just show every stat????? LMGs are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ worthless because they start dropping off the moment you try shooting enemies outside of sneezing distance. Every pistol besides the Deagle shoots BB rounds for some reason. There's a revolver whose animations all take 20 years each. Payday 3 is a near-complete regression from Payday 2, and I do not see this game getting much better. The systems they have reworked from release have only lead to worse iterations of PD2 systems.
A fun heist game. Mostly a sidestep from it's predecessor, although some mechanics are better realized and concepts that are good for the game have been added *Retrospectively to launch* This and Payday 2 are seperate experiences, in many ways as Payday, the heist is to it's sequel. Whether or not this game lives up to it's franchise's previous crescendos remains woefully uncertain and even more unlikely. However, what may emerge despite it's rocky launch and slow development could very well define itself among those titles as an experience worth not only playing, but investing in. With that in mind, that is not *quite* yet that product. and although fun, is still shot full of holes which need desperate repair. The development of the game has passed between hands once now, and the experience has improved for it. Too often do games release half baked, and as a long time fan of the franchise, I find myself optimistic for the future of the game, but equally disappointed at the results produced thus far with the paid DLC model introduced years prior. If this is our product thus far, perhaps hopes should not be set too high for the final coalescence of development when Payday 3 reaches the end of it's support. As stated, this game is a different experience, with some of the soul of those prior still glimmering from within. And if it doesn't cut it, you can still play payday 2, which is full of it's own special suite of bugs and issues, but easily a legendary experience worth your time.
payday 3 feels like a better looking, downgraded payday 2, that at least has crossplay. I don't want to dislike the game. But it's... it's like you want to add features but forget that they impact gameplay in a negative way. Oh and you must make an account to play it. ♥♥♥♥ this.
I was hesitant due to the negative feedback, mostly from lifetime Payday 2 players giving the game a shot, realizing there's not as much content or isn't Payday 2 remastered, and saying the game is bad. It was on sale, it's been almost two years since I played the beta, I decided to hop in and see what all of the fuss is about. Low and behold, I can't put the game down. It's good fun and has plenty of replay value. I'd catch myself saying "one more run" that turned into two or three before bed. I'm about level 140 right now, caps at 150, and then unlocks the Infamy prestige system that goes up to level 1,600(?) with new rewards. It's really good to see them pumping out consistent updates with a roadmap on future additions. They're even doing map reworks which tells me they acknowledge their mistakes and fix them. Here's my Pros/Cons list for anyone who wants a fresh perspective from someone who doesn't care how the game relates to Payday 2: Pros * Awesome UE4 graphics with DX12 implementation. * All animations are smooth and high quality. * Haven't experienced really any in-match bugs. Objectives always trigger, no issues with the maps, enemies, or NPC. * The gunplay feels hard-hitting, it's weighted and impactful. You shoot a guy in the knee, the enemy reacts to a knee shot. Enemies dip, dodge, and take over. The quality of work gone into the gunplay rivals that of CoD/Battlefield. * The enemies are more armored up than previous titles, you will see armor break as you shoot enemies in the chest and helmet. Accuracy on where shots land becomes more important. * The skill system is awesome, easy to understand with plenty of build options. * I believe there four police assaults total for most maps, what I like is that you get about a 20-30 second break in between the first three rounds instead of a constant never ending horde of police. But if you don't get out by the fourth assault, it's the final and never ending. I'm not sure if other Payday titles offered a break between rounds, but it's vital to get the robbery and optional objectives completed without being harassed. * You can choose your armor set and mod it with different plates, e.g. a 4-plate piece, 2-plate, 3-plate, etc. You can choose thick armor that doesn't regenerate and requires an armor bag, hybrid armor that will regenerate if the plate doesn't break, and a type that regenerates even if the plates broken. If you have a 4-plate set, you can choose which individual plates to use for all four slots. All with different skill perks. * There's a new overkill system where once you get enough kills, you can call in a big ass weapon to clear a path. You've got a baseball bat, a rocket launcher, grenade launcher, minigun, 50-cal sniper, and a few others that can be modded. * The character models, customization options, and voice acting are all spot on. Especially the voice lines used when telling civilians to get on the ground. "Let's play a game - you get on the f*cking ground or I f*cking kill you. Ready?" * There's crossplay and it works smooth, which also reveals a much larger player base then the 1K - 2K through Steam. Finding a match takes less than 15-30 seconds. Cons * Limited maps and weapons with the base game, DLC purchases required for more. The good news here is their DLC is cheap, all of it combined while on-sale was maybe $40 or that of most standard big titles like this. A new map might be $2-4, a weapon back of three or four guns another $3-5. I'm okay with this for two reasons: I want to support the developer and all of these small transactions combined to unlock everything in the game equals to that of one character outfit in a game like Diablo 4/PoE2 or triple-A titles. * Limited weapon mod selection, maybe 2-6 weapon mod options for each separate attachment. Obviously something they're working on because the DLC guns have new gun-specific mods. * Matchmaking connection can be spotty. You'll play 5 robberies in a row without an issue, but randomly get "can't connect to host", long loading times into some matches, fires you back to the main menu if it can't connect, etc. These are easily tolerable and hopping into a different game usually solves the problem. * Enemy accuracy is on point, let's just say the police academy trained these pigs well. They do not miss. There's a regular SWAT guy in front of you, he's landing every shot. Add a squad of SWAT and you're in a confined space, you're in trouble if you can't get quick kills. In the final round to escape, 30 cops landing every shot on you during sprint, it does get annoying. Not a huge con but should be noted. * They've leaned towards a more cartoony/goofy mask selection. You still have most of the classics, but the higher end masks are no longer badass, they're more "how funny/crazy can we make these masks". I prefer a more tactical/clown mask/The Town style aesthetic, so more of a personal con here. I can't really think of anything else that's super negative to report. Really, give the game a try and don't go in expecting a Payday 2 copy and paste. They rebuilt this thing from the ground up and it's fun as hell. This is the only bank robbing simulation out there and it scratches that itch completely, highly recommended.
After playing approximately 1k hours Payday2, I can definitely say that Payday3 is way way better, has more interesting mechanics regarding both skill and levels. Finally all builds are viable for loud heist. Again comparing to PD2, where only evasion shotgun build was available (wo dlcs). Here we have more complex mechanic of the tactical vest, You can also play as grenadier, rifle, pistol, shotgun, evasive build with smokes. And also tanky build are completely doing its work even for 4 star loud heists So all who are huge fans/community of Pd and PD2 lets PD3 as it is worth it
