Prices
The United States storefront in every case, so this compares stores and not countries.
Prices
Each in the currency that store quoted — not converted: the gap between two rows is the publisher's pricing, not an exchange rate.
13 of 15 markets; the rest we haven't asked for this title, not markets where it is unavailable.
Availability
We put this game to every storefront we collect. A market that answered not sold has told us something about the game; a market we never asked has not, and the two are never drawn the same.
Charts
Each storefront's own chart, in its own country — the closest public signal to sales where none is published. A country missing from a list is one we don't collect there, not one where the game doesn't chart.
No United States chart position — it charts only in the markets below.

Each DLC is estimated with the same model as a game, then summed — a modeled figure, not reported DLC sales.

This game was a technical marvel for years and had a dedicated modding community making it one of the best if not THE BEST open world stealth games... cue to 9th June of 2026 and new DRM update not only makes most of those mods unplayable, but also the game itself runs awfully without any mods installed. Konami really hates money, so DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!
Adding denuvo to an 11 year old game is beyond anti consumer, it's frankly pathetic and konami should be ashamed of themselves. Acquire this game through other means I'll say.

13 on sale2 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 2 “not sold” markets are read from the Steam price pass of Sep 11: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price in those. The 13 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

The last and best Metal Gear Solid game. RIP to one of the best game series.
MGSV - A Requiem for a Legend
We need to address the heavy heart in the room before we even talk about gameplay. The Phantom Pain isn’t just a game, it is a monument, a farewell, and a beautiful, fractured masterpiece. It is the final Metal Gear Solid project helmed by Hideo Kojima, and let’s be brutally honest, there is no Metal Gear Solid without him. Playing this today, knowing it was the end of that specific, brilliant era, feels like reading a final letter from a mentor. It is a haunting experience, a game that leaves you feeling empty, inspired, and deeply nostalgic all at once. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3763118224
The Sandbox of Our Dreams
If you want to talk about raw mechanics, The Phantom Pain is untouchable. It is, quite simply, the greatest stealth-action game ever conceived. The level of player agency here is terrifying, it gives you a massive, open sandbox in Afghanistan or the Angola-Zaire border, drops you in with a pile of gear, and essentially says, "Figure it out." Whether you want to be a ghost, a tactical mastermind, or a loud, reckless agent of chaos, the game supports you with a level of systems-driven depth that modern games are still struggling to copy. The way the AI adapts to your playstyle is genius. If you start headshotting everyone at night, they’ll start wearing helmets. If you keep using smoke grenades, they’ll equip gas masks. It forces you to evolve, to be creative, and to treat every infiltration like a high-stakes puzzle. It’s an intoxicating loop of planning, execution, and that glorious moment when the plan falls apart and you have to improvise your way out of certain death. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1305155891
A Narrative of Loss and Silence
The story of The Phantom Pain is, much like its protagonist Venom Snake, a ghost. It isn't a loud, exposition-heavy blockbuster like MGS4. Instead, it’s a quiet, introspective journey into trauma, language, and revenge. It’s a tragedy written in silence. Some people complain about the "gaps" in the narrative or the feeling that it was left unfinished, but I think that was always the point. The game is literally called The Phantom Pain. It’s about the things that are missing, the friends we lost, the limbs we sacrificed, and the legacy that ended too soon. When you listen to the cassette tapes, when you walk through the sterile, industrial halls of Mother Base, you feel the weight of every choice. It is a lonely, melancholic, and deeply profound experience that stays with you long after the final mission ends. It doesn't give you easy answers; it leaves you with scars.
Mother Base - The Heart of the Beast
Managing Mother Base is a meta-game that could have been a standalone title. Watching your private army grow from a handful of loyalists into a global superpower is an emotional investment. Every soldier you fulton out of the field isn't just a number, they are a recruit you saved, someone who now owes you their life. When things go wrong, or when you’re forced to face the harsh realities of your mission, it hurts. You aren't just playing a soldier, you are the Commander, the Big Boss, the man who lost everything. The bond you feel with your staff, with D-Dog, and even with the crumbling foundations of your own organization is a testament to Kojima’s ability to make us care about the mundane.
Pros:

Mechanical Perfection: The controls are buttery smooth, and the "freedom of choice" in how you approach missions is unparalleled.
Masterful Atmosphere: The desert sunsets, the rain-slicked bases, and the lonely, haunting score create an atmosphere that feels truly heavy and lived-in.
The Mother Base Loop: The addictive nature of recruiting, upgrading, and expanding your own private military is a stroke of pure genius.
Venom Snake: A protagonist who speaks very little but expresses everything through his eyes. A truly unique character study.

Cons:

Narrative Closure: The "missing" pieces of the story can feel frustrating if you’re looking for a neat, wrapped-up conclusion to the entire Metal Gear saga.
Repetitive Side Ops: Some of the smaller, procedural side missions can feel a bit repetitive after you’ve cleared the main objectives.
The "Kojima Void": The lingering realization that this is the last of his vision for the franchise is a weight that never really goes away.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3738024030
Verdict
METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN is a flawed, brilliant, and deeply emotional farewell. It is the pinnacle of the stealth genre, a game that pushes the boundaries of what a player can do in a virtual space. But more than that, it is a goodbye. It’s a testament to a visionary who dared to make games that weren't just "content," but pieces of art that challenged our morality and our understanding of heroism. We will never see another Metal Gear like this because we will never see another project lead by Hideo Kojima in this universe again. It’s a phantom limb, you feel the ache of its absence, but you cherish the memory of what it was. Do you ever find yourself just standing in the middle of the desert, looking at the stars, and realizing how much this journey meant to you?
Konami decided to add Denuvo to a ten-year-old game and broke it on steam deck. What a terrible company.
I love the game, hate the company. They updated it just a few days ago and broke all of my mods. I play the game exclusively in single player. Don't feel like dealing with trying to fix it or waiting for mods to get updated (which many probably won't.) I hear it was updated for political reasons, to block certain countries. Can you imagine one day finding that you can no longer play a game you paid for because the Konami decided that they don't like your country?
