Here to tip the scales back the other way, Most these reviews were when the game came out and it apparently had a bug then. As of this review I haven't had any problems at all. I have the board game in real life, and have all the Brotherwise Boss Monster related games also. Great games and lots of repeatability. Same can be said for this game here on steam. Plays just like the board game does. Multiplayer and solo are both fantastic and run smoothly. As for the campaign I do find it a bit odd you have to get exactly what its asking for since its RNG. so that's tough, but not impossible. Personally I think they should of gone with a more Yugioh or Pokemon style campaign where you "Duel" other people, or in this case, other bosses just by playing a match. Maybe have some different match challenges or something to put an edge on it like Star Realms does. Anyways I just came here to say I really enjoy this steam version of the board game. Love playing with others or solo, and I hope they add to this game in the future with more bosses and tiles. leader boards would be fun too. I want this game to do good so that more adaptations make its way to steam. Hinting at you Boss Monster.
Idk if the game is bugged or what. But the single player campaign made no sense. Collect 4 of the same monster type on a tile but you dont get credit. The game is basically a Roguelike where you have hearts and if you fail objectives then you lose. The game doesnt tell you if you accomplished them or not till the very end. Sooo not sure if im doing something wrong or not but it seems pretty straight forward on what to do for these quests. Wanted to like this game and was excited to try it out. but not going to waste time on a game where its main objectives are bugged
Overboss is fixed! Overboss is fixed!!! It's a great implementation of the board game with a lot of visual flair. It's not quite Monster Couch or Dire Wolf when it comes to the flair, but it's a few steps above the majority of board game adaptations on here. It's unfortunate that the initial outpouring of negative reviews due to bugs may have cursed this game permanently. If you consider yourself at all a fan of board games like Cascadia or Calico from Flatout Games, Overboss carries the same tile placement DNA. It's a bit more simple than those two in strategy -- and, if I'm honest, the gameplay lacks the polish of either* -- but there's certainly room on the digital shelf for it. One of the biggest bonuses and let downs is the inclusion of a solo campaign mode, with limited chances to complete three challenges across a series of levels. Here's where I hope the developers are able to put more work into it and take some nods from Monster Couch's Calico adaptation, because as it stands, the challenges are far, far, far too reliant on RNG. I keep coming back for more, but it doesn't mean I'm enjoying having to put down three castles all occupied by vampires when RNG means I never see three of either total, and subsequently just lose a life. A bit silly. * (I really wish they Brotherwise dedicated some time to expansions and improvements more consistently beyond the Duel implementation, because if we got those...Overboss would be a strong contender against the aforementioned titles. The style and gameplay loop don't need improvements, just the tile balance and asymmetry.)
TL;DR: Between Overboss and the old Boss Monster mobile app that was so bad they pulled it from stores, I cannot in good conscience ever give another dollar to Brotherwise Games, even for cardboard. They are openly hostile to players. _______________________ It's such a simple game. I have the game and its two-player sequel in cardboard. There's so little to it that honestly you can play it on Table Top Simulator without feeling like you needed automation. And this is what we got officially? A lazy mobile-phone game that should be $2 max? - If you are play campaign mode, there's no option to quit between stages. And if you force quit, it may corrupt your progress like mine and be impossible to continue. - It does not remember if you like playing Windowed or Full Screen. (Use Alt-Enter, because there is no UI for it.) - In fact, there is no Settings option at all. The main menu has a gear button, but it doesn't do anything. - There is no public matchmaking whatsoever. - It seems completely random whether it will auto-advance turns after I place a land and monster. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I haven't figured out the logic yet. - The size of UI elements is all over the place and a poor choice for both mobile and desktops. This is a student project, not a professional offering. I only paid for the base game because I got the DLC for free as a kickstarter supporter. (Nice of them to manipulate me into buying it by offering part of the content as a timed freebie, buy it now or lose it!) It's still not worth it. _______________________ Edit 1: There is no Settings Menu. I got the Settings to pull up, once. Changed from Full Screen to Windowed. Played with resolution options. Then tried to get BACK into Settings. Nope. Never again. Locked out. Button does nothing. So ok, try Alt-Enter to put it back full screen. It went full screen but all the UI elements are screwed up and falling off the screen. And no Settings. Alt Enter back, it's a window again, but still at full screen resolution, not where I left it. And no Settings. Tried to close/reopen. Verified files. Found and deleted the Settings.json file. Nope. You get ONE chance to set settings then never again. That's the state of the game after this long. I have never seen a more broken mobile port where even the main menu buttons don't work. Then I try to just launch a new game in Solo High Score, hoping for a different button that might work. There is no menu (or it's off screen). I managed to get a menu up once, but the Options button is still dead. Just dead. I closed and tried to reopen that menu, but cannot get it back again. Esc, Enter, Backspace, right-click, Space... there is no key I can find that gets a menu at all, even to quit. I need the Task Manager in Windows to close the menu-less game. Why is every UI element only usable one time? Is this an April Fools joke? Windows 10 and 11 tested, PC. Current rig 9800X3D, 2080Super, 64GB DDR5. Playing on a 3440x1440 display. _______________________ Edit 2: I found that it's an Ultrawide Monitor. If you have an Ultrawide, you don't have settings. It tries to inspect available resolutions, fails, and just gives up. I've seen the mixed reviews, but after playing the game post-patch, I can confidently say there's nothing wrong with it. Both single-player and multiplayer modes run flawlessly in my experience, and I honestly don’t understand the complaints. It seems like we're in a time where negativity and complaints often overshadow genuine quality. The game looks fantastic, plays smoothly, and the sound design is on point. What more can you ask for? On top of that, the makers have promised future updates with new content, so there's even more to look forward to. For full transparency, yes, I paid for the game with my own money—even though I received a copy through backing one of their other Kickstarter projects. I'm a long-time fan and own every Boss Monster board game, including expansions, Boss Monster 2, and Overboss, along with physical editions of their other games like Dungeon Kart. So, I know what I’m talking about. Overall, this game delivers, and I highly recommend it.
The core game is fun, but there is not a lot to it. Campaign mode is too rng. In a game like this you cannot do such specific goals, it becomes frustrating trying to have 3+ tiles of a kind and not getting a single one on a playthrough. Also, it feels like it needs more time in the oven. Sometimes you find bugs when loading a game or while switching screens, and it has some issues like the fact that you do not see your overal score anywhere, or the side quest screen which is a design mess and it is not understandable and it is not covered on the help section. It will probably be better after some updates, but right now it does not feel like 1.0
TL;DR this isn't worth picking up at full price unless you're a big fan of Brotherwise Games. It's functionally dead and there's no indication of it making a comeback. I have lots of things to say about the state of this game and the past and future of Brotherwise titles digitally, but all in all this is a game that really only will be for existing fans. Can it be fun? Absolutely. Will you be able to play online without having friends and/or searching for players on Forums or Discord? Probably not. It's fun, a solid 7:10 title. Needed more time in development clearly. It hurts me to give a negative review of Overboss because I have a complicated stance on Brotherwise and the digital versions of their board games. The first game was in a rough state from the start and was eventually completely pulled from all app stores never to be seen again. The team assured fans this would not happen again with Overboss and yet that's exactly what's going on. Do I believe they learned from past mistakes? Possibly. Do I see that being displayed with this game? No. The delays for launch clearly were needed, but more time was ABSOLUTELY still needed. I want to see Brotherwise and the digital versions of their games do well, but 0 for 2 is a really bad sign for future titles. Overboss is a somewhat complex game and the digital version has a passable at best tutorial that has to be manually selected. You are not initially dropped in to be shown how the game works or how to do effectively anything. The digital version very much assumes you are familiar with the physical game already, much like the digital version of Boss Monster did. Things like achievements were broken at launch and for some still apparently are even now. The multiplayer is effectively dead unless you actively plan to seek out players via an external platform or the Steam Forums due to the game being niche, lacking cross-play and launching in a very unfinished state. I think there are some positives though. The visuals are amazing, the pixel art is top notch and really does bring the physical game to a digital form nicely. For those who understand the game already when going in, it's a pretty smooth move to start playing this version. The team behind the game is also occasionally talking to and working on addressing the community, that's more than could be said for Boss Monster Digital back in the day. All in all, I don't think Overboss is going to succeed, and that's a shame. I think it's going to sell a few copies now and then when on sale, but it's overall likely too late for this game to make a comeback. It's niche and launched in a bad spot. If you like the Brotherwise board games, definitely pick it up. A few words of advice to the teams at Brotherwise and Goblinz: While I love that you made Overboss, it is a shame that you weren't as vocal about the situation with things about the development as you could have been. Steam has a news feature, it would be great for fans if you were using it to talk about why the game was delayed so much and to address player concerns. Overboss is very niche as a title, don't treat it selling small numbers of copies as the brand not being worth another go. If you want to make some serious money, Brotherwise is sitting on solid gold with Dungeon Kart. It's perfect for a racing game. Don't adapt it 1:1 as the board game. Make it a literal Kart racer game, maybe add the board game digitally as a secondary mode if 1:1 adaptations are so important to you. These indie racer titles sell amazingly well, see Garfield Kart and Nightmare Kart for examples of this. Clearly, the 1:1 adaptations aren't working out for digital games, but this is a perfect chance to really branch out. Start off with community focus on platform. Use the News feature, be in the Forum talking. Earn back some good will with the digital player base. There's still hope for digital games with Brotherwise IPs, they just need to be handled differently. A better remake of Boss Monster Digital would probably sell very well if done with community focus and more attention to feedback.
I have played the physical board game many times, and have a general understanding of the rules off the top of my head. There is absolutely zero explanation of points, mechanics, etc. to be found. Even as someone who knows how the game works, I could only guess what this game wanted me to do to succeed.
All in all a cool concept but I'm getting absolutely railed in the easy mode campaign due to not being able to do missions. It basically asks you do do things like make a line of 3 or a 2x2 set of a specific terrain, and then the game just never gives you that terrain or proper tokens for it. Its rng and not really in a good way. That said, it is fun when you get what you want but you might burn through lives re-trying to get it. Still recommended if you can get this on a sale. just something to burn an hour or 2.
