About
Ultra Mega Cats is a fast-paced roguelike cooperative third-person shooter. In it, you control one of the Mega Cats, armed to the fangs with the goal of escaping corporate captivity while battling hordes of enemies. Fight through a series of randomly selected rooms and perform feats of dexterity and skill in an extremely dynamic environment – solo or with friends.
Imagine living in a world flipped upside down, where rodents and feathered forces rule and cats are shunned. You're one of the last cats standing – disgraced, brainwashed, and trained to serve your former prey as their personal killing machine. But that is not enough, as the cat’s soul knows no master! Awaken your inner predator and restore balance to this world!
While your rage-fuelled instinct and millenia of evolutionary experience may make you think that pouncing with claws and fangs at your enemies will get the job done, well, things have changed drastically, and your enemies have caught on. You’ll need to make good use of your skills, especially against the likes of bomb-carrying hamsters.
Utilize a wide range of abilities and playstyles to survive the onslaught of enemies in your way.
As you move throughout the world with cat-like agility, you’re able to tailor your experience to your liking. Choose your favorite Mega Cat, personalize your loadout, and discover thousands of build possibilities, allowing you to play however you want.
At your disposal: Choose from five different ultra cats (two at Early Access launch) with different play styles and personalities. Each cat has 50 different M.O.D.s that can be unlocked, offering more variety.
Friends fur-ever: Streamlined, arena-based co-op PvE combat for up to three players in Early Access.
Gods of the Arena: Each arena is arranged into ever-changing biomes through level generation. Thanks to different Coalitions (each consisting of different Aspects), no two playthroughs are the same.
It’s purrdy: The game’s stunning, vibrant art style packs as much of a punch as your cat hero will, ka-pow!
Who wants to live in a world ruled by mice anyway?: Work together to free the three Ancient Cats from their enslavement, defeat your rodent and bird enemies and create a new cattopia for felines everywhere.

TL:DR; Released too early, needs a LOT of small improvements in many systems. Has some promise if they keep at it. Its an early access game, but I feel like it came out a little TOO early. there's only 3 playable classes right now and not much map/enemy variety. There's little to no story as of now that isn't in the trailers, and its basically just all gameplay. Attacks and ability's feel very hollow. there's little satisfying feedback for when you fire a missile or throw an enemy at an another. It's all just flashes of impact confirmation and numbers floating off. Sound design and animation of this need a big improvement. This game really needs a mantling ability, especially for the more agile/fragile characters. it's never fun to be half a centimeter off the top of a ledge and you just can't reach it. This is often fatal to the fragile characters in the thick of combat. The art style is nice, not too oversaturated with colours and neon or special effects. It does feel a little like its stuck between choosing a more interesting stylised look matching 80/90's cartoons and a more modern generic and safe style. I'd prefer more of the former than the latter. I *think* there's some missing pieces in the story/onboarding. I'm getting dialog from someone about being a goddess of electricity after selecting a mid-room upgrade and I have no idea who it is or why they're talking. I don't know if its not been implemented yet or if its a bug, but its very odd. Some of the perks are very lame. A choice between 1% chance to dodge attacks and a 5% damage increase when hit sometimes isn't worth the time it takes to select between them. Either make the choices more distinctive, interesting, or powerful. I want to be excited when presented with upgrades and perks. Meta-upgrades are decent and easy enough to get. I like the system where you can have as many as fit into a grid, its unique and makes you think a bit more about what ones you want to use. Movement is a little floaty. Its not like you'll *need* precise platforming in this arena shooter most of the time but if you're playing a fragile class its often the difference between life and death. Current music, dialog and sound effects are very repetitive. I think I heard the gunslinger cat say "I HAVE A DATE WITH DESTINYYYYY" about 6 times in a row. Overall its an okay-ish start but it definitely released way too early and needs a LOT of polishing. I can see it being quite fun when its tooled up properly and I'm looking forward to it.
The movements are so incredibly slow.. aren't cats known for their speed and nimble movements?
Somehow I do not like this game. Maybe in the future after some updates.
from what i can see all the negative reviews are pretty much 3 hours or less of playtime, so ima call that a skill issue, goated game, fun as hell, a little unstable atleast on my system (2 crashes in 1,5 hours) 10/10 would recommend, this deserves more love and attention Edit: After further playing the game and just experiencing what it has to offer, i find a lot of the choices/decisions taken in the game are at best questionable in my opinion, most items and effects are calculated only once (at the point of purchase), so certain buffs/items are only good when bought after purchasing certain other items or only at certain points of the run, the game overall just lacks content, it has great potential but feels lackluster thats the best way i can describe the game in its current state
I like the game its a bit unpolished right now but it is in early access also the game needs more difficulty its just too easy right now Pros - Really fun movement if you know what you're doing decent gun play with rewards for hitting shots since 90 percent of the items are crit items Cool bosses DEEP upgrade trees Build variety 3 cool characters CONS - too few maps last boss isn't really finished rn not very hard beat the game on like second or third run no upgrades thats it for like $11.99 its easily a 7/10 pretty good game me likey
TL:DR It still needs a lot of work. Sadly this game was released too early, I want to love it and the style and overall premise is wonderful, however.... 1. The game needs SERIOUS balancing. Of the three characters, Clint is BY FAR a level above the rest. BBkat is almost unusable without upgrades due to being way to slow, large and with very low damage, Kagero is usable, but still incredibly underwhelming to the point that its exhausting just to get through the beginning floors. Clint actually feels worth playing and has skills that actually do something ( however his entire kit does feel way too strong). Beyond the characters, a lot of the in run upgrades feel like the prices are all over the place. Some of the items feel completely useless while others make you essentially unkillable. 2. There is a serious lack of information in the game. Tooltips and key phrases in skills and upgrades with no explanation. No real information about how the rank vs rarity system works. There is no way to check what they skills do while in a run and multiple skills leave you guessing as to what they actually do. 3. This game is seriously buggy, like game breaking at times. One of the post prevalent bugs is that skills often wont go off when you press the button for them, especially with the primary fire. Leaving you clicking over and over with a skill that's not on cooldown or with ammo and it does nothing, sometimes not working for 10-15 seconds which is a death sentence in a game like this. However the worst is once you get to to the second area. I'm not sure how common this is but i experienced artifacting over the whole screen and enemies disappearing. As someone who never gets motion sick, this was bad enough that it made me sick to my stomach, and if someone was epileptic or sensitive to flashing, this could cause some serious trouble. Like I said I truly want to love this game, but it honestly feels like an alpha at best, I really TRULY hope this game gets better and I can recommend it but sadly at its current state I just can't. Ill stick through and support the creators, and if you are willing to go on that journey, get it on sale. Just know what you are getting into.
After playing for a bit more time, and being able to explore it a bit further, i can say this : This game is on the right tracks. It's honestly fun to play it in solo, so i am sure it will be a blast, to try it with friends! though, just like every game, there are things to change. i'll try to resume them with the negative points first, and the positivity! let's go with the negative traits of the game : -Character animations : I'm dissapointed to see that the characters have not much animating... don't get me wrong, they don't T-pose while you play or anything like that, they even have death animations! But... no blinking animations at all, no idle pose animation (From what i saw), no emotes either? that's a bit sad. A cat has MANY ways to express themselves, either with paws, claws, licks, meows, and let's not talk about their "zoomies"... it would be a blast to see more of all that! i encourage working a lot on animations. -Difficulty balancing : The game is either super hard, or super easy, depending on what you will be choosing as traits, and what you will obtain (it's a roguelike, that's common sense.) but the second zone ennemies are clearly less of a menace than the first zone of the game. They are much slower, much less reactive, and as long as you keep your distance and make sure that you hit from afar, they can't do anything to you. Especially the mortar frogs (or however they are called.) they are too slow. i suggest reworking on the second zone to make it more challenging. -"What's the game about, again?" : I would suggest adding more cat features. It's a game about cats, and yet i never hear a meow in it! no purring either? don't be afraid to make a feline carnage! cats are messy, they knock down stuff, they are small tornados running around! make us feel like cats, don't be afraid to make Kagero walk on some walls or even run on them for some seconds! she is a cat AND a ninja! it fits the character perfectly. maybe just adding a silly button to "Meow" would be great! just one button that would make the character meow or purr. Deeper meows for clint, tinier ones for BB kat. -Some abilities have to be reworked : Mostly, i'm thinking about the ultimates : they don't have much advantages except for Kagero that can be very useful if you try to avoid ennemies and if you want to do more damage. But BB Kat's ultimate is useless on ennemies that will drop dangerous liquids on the ground (Mostly the hamsters) because they will damage you no matter what. Also Clint's ultimate, which consists in lowering your speed to make a barrage of bullets all around you. problem is : you are extremely slow (Even with the upgrade in the shop), AND you still can be damaged by bullets and sniper units. A rework has to be done with these two, because it doesn't make me want to use their ultimate abilities. -Shop prices are unbalanced : a big rework has to be done about the shop prices. sometimes, it feels like they are completely random, except for the nexus tokens that are fixed at the same price every round. I suppose they rise progressively as you get through the levels, but in zone 2, i had a trinket that costed more than 10 000 coins... that's unrealistic. -Some upgrades are useless : Characters gets upgraded with some nexus tokens for a much more efficient gameplay. But i clearly don't understand some of them. Clint has an upgrade for the duration of his smoke bomb. It can be upgraded by 1% that way. i do not know if it's a problem with the french translation of the game, but this is absolutely useless. It's the same with much other upgrades. they need to be worked on, quite carefully. having much upgrades to select is awesome, but if some of them are completely useless, i'd rather not see them. Alright, so far, that's the negative points i noticed. Now, for the pawsitivity! (haha, funny jokes :>) -Musics : Not gonna lie, it was already nice at the beginning of the game. Catchy, groovy, stylish... when i re-played the game, i was surprised to see that they made even better soundtracks! quite repetitive, yes, but honestly, they are awesome! i wouldn't mind listening to them on the side, during other tasks. Perhaps adding a little juke-box in the lobby to listen to the musics of the game while you do your upgrades would be great! -Graphics : They are cool. i don't have the best screen resolution, but the game looks purrfect! From little details on some bottles on the ground, to some decorations or trinkets here and there in some maps, aswell as lots of other designs for ennemies or for the characters, that looks great. And the game also runs smoothly! not a single stutter, no low-rate for the frames... optimized wonderfully, and that's a superb thing! well done! -Voice acting : as a person who wishes to do some voice acting, i can tell that they are doing a wonderful job. but come on now, when i hear clint, i get some chills remembering about a certain cowboy i swear i've heard before... But seriously, i love the voices! I'd love to hear more of them! either when you buy an item, or use a capacity, you can tell that this is top quality! My total respect for that voice acting, it is outstanding! -Translations (French translations exactly) : Not everything is perfect, and not everything is translated, but in all honesty, it is not bad at all! i know some other studios with much more people working in it that uses google translate for their translations. but when i play that game, i can tell that it is fairly translated! they even added little puns or french sayings and sentences used in everyday's life, some puns about rats and cats, and lots of other little jokes. -Gameplay : Let's be honest. This is addictive. Sometimes, i'm frustrated by the stuff i get along the run, and see that i have no luck at all... Sometimes, i get cornered by ennemies and easily fall, and sometimes, it's just a sniper shooting from afar that defeats me. But i cannot think otherwise than "Dang it... okay, another round!". Playing solo for 5 hours was awesome, fun, and i wanna go back to it already! but playing it with friends (if they get the game) is going to be Purretty amazing! My thoughts : This game has a great potential. I'd love to see more of it! i'd love to play more of it too... i'll keep an eye on the game, because honestly, it's a blast. It needs to be updated, yes, it needs improvements... but every great game started with some flaws here and there. Sharpen those claws, purr like an engine, drink that free-lactose milk, and let the zoomies begin!
Good fun, four hours flown by shooting and slashing and smoke bombing and diving around. Looking forward to how it develops and more characters becoming available. The gameplay is engaging and after dying a lot at the start, the rate of getting upgrades kept us going and meant we were able to progress without just getting frustrated. Look forward to the next session.
Steam deck users: beware, the game does not currently work. The game will open, but the screen will be black and eventually crash. You won't see the title screen. I have reported this months ago during the demo period and still has not resolved. I have tried different proton compatibilities and none have worked. Do not purchase, wait for fix.
