A spiritual successor to Samu's free Mothlight, Orogenesis is another one of those weird RPG Maker games I like so much. + Samu's artstyle is, obviously, the main draw. It's a bit similar to Mortis Ghost's grotesque characters, with extra demons and knights. All the enemies have original designs, and even if I probably preferred Mothlight's lanky demonknights, they look good in this game too. The maps are pretty nice, each using a specific color palette. The dungeons are a bit more generic, but they're still competently mapped, which isn't common in RPG Maker games. + The world has the same strange setting as Mothlight (with a few returning characters), which is more or less OFF meets Space Funeral meets Dark Souls. It sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it actually... kinda works? The plot can be a bit hard to understand at times, but it's both tragic and ridiculous, and assuming you can suspend your disbelief at a world that's got both talking animals, gangsters, steampunk knights, and eldritch entities on the same screen, it's pretty enjoyable. + The music is extremely "experimental" so it's hard to tell if it's good or not. I liked it a lot though. + The dungeons have some light Zelda elements (block puzzles, looking for keys, these kinds of things). Not particularly challenging, but at least it's fun, unlike the following thing. - The combats were an utter chore. The game uses RPG Maker VX's default battle system, which is about as balanced as a bag of whales. Debuffs are completely overpowered (poison will destroy you in 5 seconds, sleep and silence will turn bosses into sitting ducks), enemy AI is non-existent (most of the difficulty comes from whether the RNG likes you or not), tactics are thrown out of the window thanks to the way speed works (there's literally no way to predict if the enemy can attack before you can heal since the turn order seems completely random), but, thankfully, in this game you can't go above the defense thresholds so you won't have to deal with 0 damage attacks. The first half of the game is extremely painful, then you get to use the broken debuffs and become unstoppable. If the enemy designs weren't so original, the game would probably have been better if the combats were removed entirely. - While the world itself is interesting, the dialogues are often poorly written, and the playable characters don't have much in the way of personality or development. 7/10 Despite the poor combats, it's still fun to explore the world of Orogenesis. If Samu makes a third game in this universe, I hope he'll tone down the combats and focus more on puzzles and exploration.

If you are looking for a classic JRPG/RPGMaker game that is different and unconventional, here you have it. Orogenesis is unconventional and rather crazy in an interesting way. It contains bizarre, sometimes uncomfortable, maybe even triggering,
and in the extra endings undeniable disgusting, speaking x-rated,
elements. Therefore, it cannot be generally recommended. The other thing that could put off people is the lack of a convincing, cohesive story (maybe that's just me), the atmosphere, though, is mostly consistent. After finishing the game (~9h), I have a bleaker view on Orogenesis and can only mildly recommend it. The main reason for this is, apart from the graphics, it is a rather uninnovative RPG(Maker) experience. The main points for me are: - The battle system is almost a step back, very little tactical elements. Only the sleep spell is worth to consider, and once you have it, you can pretty much apply it to any enemy. Boring. - The story is very flat - The characters are extremely flat, one of them does not have a single line in the entire game if I remember correctly. - gold economics are a joke: 'Dang, we would need to implement an arena, or so to counter the outrageous amount of money you need later on.. ah, let's just add a casino with a money farm option..' well, sort of. - The sound design does not work for me in the long run. Switching BG/atmosphere music in dungeons annoyes me a lot.. and these are just the main points. Sad, to say: 55/100. Mostly a collectors item, in my book. I still have to check out Mothlight, the spiritual predecessor of this game from the same dev to see if it is any better.
Beat it, all endings and side stuff unless there's something hidden very well. Thought it would be longer with the play times on other reviews. There's a weird bit of antisemitism in one of the last areas which makes me less forgiving of all the other jank that comes with small, odd indie games. This game has great art and music but fails in every other area. Combat is brain-dead and goes from being difficult very early game to a cakewalk once you get equipment. 95% of battles was me just spamming attack to damage race enemies since the healing options and spells were terrible until the very overpowered party full-heal you get towards the end. The final battles are really weak and anti-climatic. Story's standard fantasy fare and dialogue is sparse. Generally these sort of games offer an interesting story that's different from more established developers, but it seems like they used up all their creativity with the visuals. Just don't support the dev. I had their other games on my to-play list but I'm going to steer clear of everything Samu after this.
Got stopped by a softlock issue at the Edna the Witch encounter that's never been resolved in all the years this game has been on Steam. Additionally, there's an anti-semitic caricature later in the game... wtf? Outside of this and the limited time I played, I got the impression this was something of a lower effort for the creator. The story is simplistic and bland. Graphics are very remiscent of a Zelda gameboy game with the usual weird npc designs from SAMU, although they're somewhat less creative this time. The music was very good, which is something else his works are known for. But... it was a very basic experience with the usual linear adventure direction. I used to love SAMU titles like Mothlight, but this felt phoned in and unpolished. I'm also really not down with a racist character design that makes no sense in a fantasy world like this. I dunno... maybe this well is dry. This was well below what SAMU can do with a plot and overall design. Can't recommend it.
Dude, sick reference to Snoop Dogg smoking weed. I can’t believe you’re so clever.
As funny as adding a sheckle Jew sterotype into the game was to imagine you really shoudn't do that dude lol
meh
abstract sicc game about sicc dude :D
