The Ascent is an action-shooter RPG set in a cyberpunk world where you deal with corporate power and how it affects society. The game hits you right away with its amazing visuals, and they look fantastic. The lighting and reflections, especially with ray tracing on, are incredible. The soundtrack is great too and really pulls you into the cyberpunk atmosphere. I did not expect the characters to be fully voiced, and the dialogue is pretty good for an indie game of this size. The combat is done really well. It gives you exactly what you would expect from an action-shooter. Fights feel smooth, your character moves well, and you never feel slowed down or clunky, which is the most important thing. The RPG systems are pretty simple and are clearly meant for casual players who do not want to deal with complicated gear and talent combinations. So if you are looking for deep complexity, you will not find it here. The weapons that drop also give you an illusion of choice. Most of them feel like they did not get any balancing, and a lot of them are just useless. On top of that, important tooltips for attributes are missing. You collect gear with different stats throughout the whole game, but you have no idea what they actually do. In the end, you just pick whatever has the higher number, which is a huge letdown for a game that calls itself an RPG. We played the game in co-op, and that works fine. Shared loot, shared quests, everything works like it should. On the technical side, though, it is not so great. The stability is shaky, and you will run into a few crashes here and there. There are also some weird bugs, like getting stuck in the revive animation or the interaction button just not working. TLDR; Despite the technical issues, I would still recommend The Ascent. It is a great action-shooter with excellent atmosphere and style.
Pros:
- Stunning visuals - Great soundtrack that adds to the cyberpunk atmosphere - Fully voiced characters with decent dialogue - Smooth and responsive combat - Great co-op
Cons:
- Some crashes and stability issues - Occasional bugs - The RPG system could be more advanced - Most weapons feel unbalanced and useless, giving you an illusion of choice - Missing tooltips for attributes - Enemies feel too bullet-spongy in the later stages of the game.
Overall rating: 7/10
The visual are stunning, the music is passable and it really feels like a cyberpunk game. The downside is everything else: the story, the bullet sponge enemies, the underwhelming weapon upgrades, the clothes and the list can go on.
The gameplay was fun, and I can see the potential. But everything else felt mediocre. The game is poorly optimized, suffers from performance issues/crash, and overall wasn't a great experience.

While the basic setting is characterful and gameplay is fun (if light in options or complexity), constant crashes this many years after release, and some truly awful mission design for the last few sections of the main story - pointless difficulty spikes and dips, with no relation to the alleged mission level requirement -make finishing the game a boorish, unskilled and chaotic grind, killing any charm the game had. Perhaps worth it if on a very large discount, but don't expect to enjoy the closing sections.
Awesome and thrilling environmental art & graphics. The cyberpunk astetic is perfectly represented. Gameplay is POE / Diablo like and is well balanced; on normal diffiiculty, I didn't need to grind up levels inorder to advance, as I did the side missions along the way. Main Story was compelling and the highlight of the game. Covering interesting and "realistic" concepts. Thoroughly enjoyed my time with this.
I liked it a lot. The cyberpunk world looks amazing, with tons of detail packed into every area, and the atmosphere is easily one of the strongest parts of the game. It feels dirty, crowded, neon-lit, and alive. The combat is also satisfying once you get used to it. The weapons feel good. It is not perfect, and there are moments where it can feel a little repetitive, but the world, visuals, and overall feel of the game made it worth playing for me.
This game is strong 7.3/10. This is why: The game soundtrack is absolutely amazing, they really picked good good songs for each situation, fight/city/cutscene/etc. Graphics looks amazing, I played on max and the reflections, water, neon lights looked so beautiful and it did created amazing cyberpunk atmoshphere, plus the build of the map where you have stairs and can just switch levels and amazing looking interiors really caught my eye, this is one of the best looking cyberpunk games what I played. The Main story was good but little too much dialogue on my taste, cutscenes look amazing and there is lot of them in second half of the game, I didn't do much side quests but the ones what I did have some story and were made to be interesting not the classic go kill/pick up and go back. There is big selection of armors and weapons but one of my main problems was enemy scaling most weapons just didn't do any damage and due to lack of upgrade resources and enemies level, I was using one weapon from start of the game till end since it was only weapon upgraded and only what did some damage. On the other side the augment system is amazing and it can help you to kill enemies with ease so don't sleep on it. Overall the gun play and movement was fun and entertaining for me. I played the game in coop and there is some issues game was frequently lagging the other player cutscenes audio was delayed for one of us, or if you were in shop when other player started talking you missed cutscene completely, also the game kept crashing and it did needed to be shut and restarted. Overall I would say the game is worth the $$$ even if you do mostly the story like me and finish in 12h.
