I really enjoyed playing Old Gods Rising. It is a first person exploratory adventure seen through the eyes of Professor Winston. At the request of a movie director, he visits Ashcraft University to research it for a movie location. The university is empty (film crew nowhere to be found) and the story is told through phone calls made by Tom and his radio conversations with the director. The sound track and voice overs are well done. You will need to listen to them, as you can't click through dialog or leave a scene during many of the conversations or narrations. The university is vast and has been created with great details. It was very authentic, with many buildings, corridors, rooms, gardens, artwork, etc. Tom soon begins to find some oddities in the artifacts he is examining (which he describes in great detail) and suspects that all is not as it appears. To tell more would be to enter spoiler territory so I will leave it at that. The game is really a huge hidden object exercise. The story leads you down a basic path but there are several sets of items to find if you are achievement oriented. The university is maze-like and you will need to explore every doorway, room, and corridor that you can access. There are 'you are here' maps posted which are helpful if you get lost. There are a handful of easy puzzles to access certain gates. Otherwise, it is just explore at your own pace, getting through objectives as they are presented, and trying to find as many of the 'objects of interest' that you are inclined to search for. Towards the end, there is a 'point of no return.' I stumbled through this doorway prior to finding everything I was looking for. After seeing the end, I replayed from the beginning. Although you have to repeat some conversations and puzzles, your achievement progress is saved so you only have to find items missed on previous games. Although none were game breaking, there were some minor bugs. Doorways that led to 'blue sky' nothingness and an occasional game freeze. Both required reloading from the last save point. I soon learned to avoid 'blue sky' openings, as they would self-correct if you left the area and returned. The game auto-saves so often that you don't lose progress if you stop playing (either by choice or due to a glitch). I also had some issues with achievements on my second time through - the counts seemed to get out of synch but all corrected in the end and I reached the 100% I was targeting. I thought Old Gods Rising was an interesting story that held my interest and I took pleasure in wandering the halls of a virtual university. I recommend it to those who enjoy a slower paced game with much to see. An added note - there is a bonus chapter available if you load your saved game after completion. It did not make a lot of sense to me, as it added some action elements without explanation so I walked away, feeling quite satisfied with completing just the core game.
Yine de yapılmak istenen iş uğruna geçer not verilebilinir.
"When does mildly meta become aggressively meta?", the game asks itself without a hint of irony. Once again, there should be a more nuanced way to review games besides fully negative or fully positive - because this game deserves your time and money, but it doesn't deserve your respect. The game is riddled to the core with referential humor, to it's own detriment. It's obsessed with undercutting any possible tension with a joke - like playing D&D with someone can't go for more than a few seconds without cracking wise. Even with it's last gasp, the game refuses to take itself seriously. To a point, this works in the games favor. It will make you question if this really a horror game, or some sort of comedy like "Hot Fuzz". But it doesn't ever turn the silliness off and let you be afraid. The sculptures littered across the campus are one of the best examples of this. Some of them are moderately clever puns, which have several layers to them. Others are so garishly out of place they feel like they should be Easter eggs, hidden behind something. The setting is wonderful. The plot is nicely set up. The game-play itself is solid with a few rough edges where you can see the game's seams. The puzzle system is under-utilized and needed more puzzles. The mythological research in the game is spot on and made me think that once the game got to the "third act" it be serious for the big reveal. It was not. It stopped just short of having something jump out at you wearing a giant purple hat that looks like a strangled Muppet. I encourage you to try the game and form your own opinions. It's not wholly un-enjoyable. I had a midly fun three hours. I hope the dev goes on to do more games that are either more serious or more comedic - because they can do both, but not both at once.
Pretty fun game. It's sort of like a Lovecraftian Stanley Parable type game with lots of references to pop culture and nerd humour as well as general humour. This is a walking simulator that has lots to look at and explore as well as a captivating story which keeps you intrigued the whole way through as you try to work out what is going on. You can get the gist of what is actually happening but there is something about the way that is executed that leaves you unsure of yourself the whole way through. The ambient music is superb and so are the sound effects and it really adds depth and immersion to the game along side the fantastic visuals. Some problems I have however include the lack of options in the pause menu; no real saving structure (as I couldn't achieve 100% in one playthrough because the "Empty Graves" achievement seems to have bugged, I found the last grave which is story related and the achievement never unlocked and I am unable to reload a save from that point in order to retry). Ordinarily I would replay the whole game again just to achieve it, but I feel as though one playthrough is enough and doing so would be too tedious, as the final grave is at the end of the story. All in all, I really do recommend "Old Gods Rising", it's a great time-killer!
The graphics are quite nice, but it's basically a very short walking simulator with a mediocre story. The "puzzles" mostly amount to clicking the mouse at the right time; and while I was hoping to experience some sort of suspense or sense of wonderment or intrigue, sadly that did not happen. It's an ok way to blow through a few hours, I guess; but definitely buy it on sale. The experience is worth $2-$3, not $10.
Old Gods Rising is yet another game that surprised me more than expected. It has some rough edges and is very clearly indie, but it still managed to be an interesting experience. The voice acting and art style is pretty good. You're quite simply exploring a regular-looking college campus for most of the game, but you feel like something bigger is at play here, and weird things are happening while you look for a film crew (your character's job is to help work for a new film). This game is really one hard to explain but the best way to put it is that it examines paranoia and conspiracy theories. I'm not sure I could say it's worth $10 because it is probably only about 2 hours in length, assuming you're not exploring every piece of the campus. You can find some hidden optional areas or Easter eggs that point at the plot early on. It can be a couple of hours longer depending upon your pacing and if you go for all of the achievements. At the same time, I don't think the game needed to be longer. However, it could've handled its ending a little better, as it was too abrupt. One thing to note is that they added an extra chapter onto the game, but I thought it made little sense and played pretty poorly. If they had rounded out the main game and fixed up issues, that would've been much better.
This is a hilarious game, one of the most original takes on Lovecraft in a game.
Decent walking sim.
The artwork is nice but the gameplay is repetitive and amounts to walk from here to there and back again.
