A2 is love, A2 is life.

I bought this game to see what is it all about, if it is really the best game ever made. No, it wasn't to me, but that's fine. This game is not meant for everyone, it was not created for that purpose. It is more like a medium for the creator, the director and the team's message, vision and will. The game doesn't pander to the market and perhaps that's also part of its charm. A lot of things are set up to be somewhat pointless, and even seem like an afterthought, but most likely that's the idea. The game can be as difficult as you want or as easy as you want, because that is not the main focus. There are no skill trees or flashy movesets, with an interesting take on equipment and attributes. You can spam recovery items or easily double your damage via a consummable. I guess the headline mechanic is the game combining shooters and bullet hells into an action RPG. There is novelty the first few times, but after that it just becomes repetitive and boring. As for the story, you can only grasp the major plot points after several playthroughs. Personally, the story pattern becomes very obvious, especially with some of the side quests. One of the playthroughs are very similar to another which feels like a waste of time. I am sure there are better ways to approach storytelling but it could also be on purpose. Sometimes there's dialogue during fights and it is very easy to miss them too. Lastly, after the boring playthrough, the game flashes something like an epilogue chapter, taunting the player to continue. Personally, I really wanted to just uninstall the game at that point. As for the post-game content, grinding, fishing and more, it really felt optional, as if the game itself is making it clear about it. It felt weird, like it was made to be a chore, but there is an option to not do it or to cheat. As if the game was testing you. The music was great, but it does get repetitive after a while too. If you remove the individual elements of the game and view it as a whole, it felt like an analogy to life. The wonder, the chores, the repetition, the hope of something new, the satisfaction of it being over. Even one of the endings, it uses the game to deliver that bittersweet feeling of achievement and then knowingly lose something, facing the loss, and moving on. The best part is that the ending itself is also optional. That's life. Personally, I play games to have fun, to explore worlds I cannot even imagine and to escape from life. I admit that Nier Automata is a unique existence and experience, but not something I prefer. I do wonder, if the game was made in 2026, would it be any different? I would still recommend it to people, because in my entire library, there isn't a single game like this.
Was hesitant to buy it due to the game not looking all too special. I bought the game on sale and it was one of the best games I have played. If you are hesitant too then I would push you to get it even if you have to wait for a sale like I did as although the PC controls suck, it was still a worthwhile experience. Although I felt playing the game twice to get to the 2nd part of the game was quite annoying, its worth pushing through it to experience it.
Easily one of the best games of the decade, a must play for the amazing story, soundtrack and ambience, it's one-of-a-kind. Even though hack-n-slashers aren't my type of game, everything else makes up for it. I would definitely recommend somebody to pick this up and experience it.
