Jeepers, the gameplay is boring mun. Neato Let's defeat cheddar. If you here because of Studio Ghibli aesthetic(only did the character designs, background art, and animated cutscenes), you're gonna have a bad time, save yourself and go watch some anime instead.
The game is aimed at very young children. I really like the art style and the music. Those are the two very redeeming points of the game. I will say that the music overpowers the actual game. It just doesn't fit with the childish story and gameplay. The story is very childish almost Barney levels of childness. The combat is just abysmal. You get thrown way too many battles pers walking distance that is just becomes a chore. The actual combat in the game is kind of like pokemon. However, it's not entirely obvious what traits of your characters will actually be better than the opponent. It's extremely grindy and tedious so I won't be playing it anymore.
The first hour is a real test, It feels like you're playing an episode of Telly Tubbies or some shiii, its slow, its childish and the story is pretty bland. The animation is really well done and I really like the art style. The game itself seems to be aimed towards 7 to 9 year olds and their Nintendo Switch's. I'm going to give it another go at some point but for now, its coming across as a children's game, and I just can't get into it! Maybe it gets better the longer you play, or the younger you are?
I tried, I was so keen for a Ghibli RPG but it feels like this is a game for very young children. The combat is very 2 dimensional and story (as far as I got) was uninspired.

Ni No Kuni is a very unique JRPG in a number of ways, the aesthetic and setting are extremely well crafted and there are a number of characters that are so fun to listen to talk that I would almost play the game just for them (shoutout drippy). But the uniqueness of it's combat definitely holds it back, lots of good ideas but a fairly sloppy execution. The story is great, very heartwarming while still being engaging throughout, you get to see characters grow as the story unfolds and by the end I felt a little proud of everybody. Overall I would say if you are a fan of the genre and are open to combat that doesn't totally hit the mark this is a must play, one of the most good natured games I have ever played.
Ni No Kuni: Wraith of the White Witch is a BEAUTIFUL GAME with gripping plotline. I've played it 3 times over with my mother (who has the BEST Drippy voice ever) since i was a wee little child before purchasing it on my own. Oliver
and Esther
are such strong MCs for being so young, the gameplay is captivating and fun for a RPG- a mix of Pokemon with an average magic system and free-flow combat, the graphics are gorgeous and HAVE BEEN even since 2013 when it first released to North America and just- UGH this game will STICK TO YOUR SOUL YOU GUYS!!!! There's not a massive list of familiars, but each one has such unique designs they're so refreshing from most "tame a battle animal" games and the actual plotline is so sad??? There's even some enemys/bosses/encounters that are genuinely unnerving even as an adult.
I HATE HATE HATE THE NIGHTMARES THEY'RE SO CREEPY AND SO HARD TO FIGHT UGH I UGHHHHH
Anyways- despite not having finished the game on Steam yet- please trust me as a veteran player who first played this when i was 5-6 and am now an adult when i tell you this is PEAK.
very good game, 10/10
Watching this was my childhood
