First thing's first, the original game is much better. This is still fun though, even with alllllllll the technical problems. read other reviews if you want more in-depth ideas of the problems with the game. End of the day though, it's still a winning formula.
Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics is a roguelike role-playing game developed and published by Spike Chunsoft, expanding upon the foundation established by the indie title One Way Heroics. Released on Steam and consoles, the game blends traditional roguelike mechanics with elements from the long-running Mystery Dungeon series, creating a unique hybrid experience that mixes strategic turn-based exploration with constant forward momentum. At first glance, it appears to follow familiar dungeon-crawling conventions, but the game quickly distinguishes itself with an unusual mechanic that fundamentally shapes every decision the player makes throughout the adventure. The story takes place in a world threatened by a mysterious and unstoppable force known as the Shine Raid, a destructive wall of light that slowly consumes everything in its path. As the chosen hero, the player must journey across the land to defeat the fallen angel Alma and put an end to the catastrophe before the entire world is erased. Unlike most role-playing games where players can take their time exploring the environment, Mystery Chronicle forces players to keep moving forward. The Shine Raid advances steadily from the left side of the screen, gradually closing in on the player’s position. If the hero lingers too long or attempts to retreat too far, the advancing light will catch up and instantly end the journey. This mechanic introduces constant tension and creates a sense of urgency that drives the entire gameplay experience. The world itself is procedurally generated, meaning that every playthrough presents a different map filled with villages, forests, ruins, mountains, and other terrain types. Each area contains its own set of monsters, items, and events, ensuring that no two runs unfold exactly the same way. Players move across a grid-based map where every action—whether it is moving, attacking, using an item, or interacting with an object—counts as a turn. Enemies also act during these turns, making positioning and timing extremely important. This classic roguelike structure encourages careful planning, but the ever-approaching Shine Raid ensures that players cannot spend too long thinking about their decisions. Combat in Mystery Chronicle is turn-based and tactical, requiring players to make smart use of their abilities, equipment, and positioning. Enemies vary widely in strength and behavior, and careless battles can quickly result in defeat. Players must manage health, hunger, and item durability while deciding when to fight and when to avoid confrontation entirely. Because the game’s world is constantly moving forward, sometimes the best strategy is to escape dangerous situations rather than engage in prolonged combat. This creates a dynamic where survival and progress are often more important than defeating every enemy encountered along the way. One of the game’s strengths lies in its variety of playable classes. Each class introduces a different playstyle and set of abilities, allowing players to approach the journey in multiple ways. Some characters specialize in melee combat, wielding powerful weapons and armor that allow them to withstand heavy damage. Others rely on magic or ranged attacks to defeat enemies from a distance. There are also more unconventional classes that focus on stealth, speed, or unique mechanics that alter how players interact with the world. As players complete runs and achieve certain milestones, additional classes and abilities become available, expanding the range of strategies that can be used in future attempts. Although individual runs can end quickly due to the harsh nature of roguelike gameplay, Mystery Chronicle includes a persistent progression system that rewards players for repeated attempts. Items, characters, and upgrades gradually become available as players continue exploring the world, even if previous journeys ended in failure. This structure encourages experimentation, as players learn from past mistakes and refine their strategies for future runs. Over time, players develop a deeper understanding of the game’s systems, enemy patterns, and item combinations, making each new attempt feel more purposeful. Visually, the game adopts a colorful pixel art style reminiscent of classic role-playing games from the 16-bit era. The environments are simple but charming, with varied landscapes that scroll by as the player moves eastward across the map. Character sprites are expressive and recognizable, while enemy designs range from traditional fantasy monsters to more unusual creatures. Although the graphics are not technically advanced, they successfully capture the nostalgic spirit of older RPGs while maintaining clarity during gameplay. The soundtrack complements the adventurous tone of the game with energetic and atmospheric music that underscores the urgency of the journey. Tracks often shift depending on the area or situation, helping create a sense of progression as players move deeper into the world. Combined with simple but effective sound effects for combat and exploration, the audio presentation reinforces the feeling of embarking on a perilous quest against an unstoppable force. Despite its originality, the game does have some drawbacks. The heavy reliance on procedural generation means that certain runs can feel unfair due to unfortunate enemy placement or a lack of useful items early in the journey. Luck can sometimes play a significant role in determining success or failure, which may frustrate players who prefer more predictable progression systems. Additionally, the story itself remains relatively minimal, serving primarily as a framework for the gameplay rather than delivering a deeply developed narrative. Another potential issue is the repetitive nature of the gameplay loop. While the constantly advancing Shine Raid keeps each run tense, the overall objective—travel east while surviving encounters—remains largely the same across playthroughs. For players who are not deeply invested in roguelike systems, the repeated attempts required to progress may begin to feel monotonous over time. Nevertheless, Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics stands out for its innovative twist on the roguelike formula. The ever-present threat of the Shine Raid transforms exploration into a race against time, forcing players to make difficult decisions about when to fight, when to explore, and when to move forward. This mechanic gives the game a sense of urgency rarely seen in traditional dungeon crawlers and ensures that every moment carries weight. In the end, Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics offers a unique and challenging adventure that successfully blends roguelike mechanics with fast-paced strategic decision making. Its combination of procedural worlds, diverse character classes, and relentless forward momentum creates an experience that is both tense and addictive. While the game’s simplicity and reliance on luck may not appeal to everyone, players who enjoy roguelike RPGs and experimentation will likely find it to be a memorable and rewarding journey. Cool game just like the first one! I really enjoy the game and recommend it if you like a simple but cool game that you can play over and over again to see if you can unlock more stuff = )
The game is good, casual. I'm not sure why the negative. The only thing people mention is 30 FPS cap; it doesn't really matter because the game is turn-based and saves power when you run on portable consoles. If it is super important, just use Lossless Scaling [1][2] and increase to whatever FPS you need. The game works great using Steam Link [3][4][5] or Steam Deck. [6] Some unfair complaints are about hidden traps that can be turned on/off in the system settings. Other settings you can use to fit your gameplay style: Caution Mode, Advice, Auto Collect, Auto Target. You may as well disable the intro, "Startup MSG Skip" from the system settings if that is something that bothers you. Simple little grid-based game where you go right The game itself is not the problem, but you will seemingly randomly have very powerful enemies chasing after you. There's an identify mechanic so you won't even know what your items do most of the time. Spam runs to learn and use your "break the game" ability frequently.
