Reviews
A lot of the reviews mention invisible traps, unfortunately for this game's review score, while they've since updated it with patches to fix that, the top reviews haven't reflected that change. So I just wanted to post this one review to let people know you can set traps to visible in the options menu, or play with invisible traps if you like the thrill. Now for an actual review, if you've played the original One Way Heroics, this is more of the same. If you haven't, well, this is a spin on a traditional roguelike. Just like the original, there's a simplistic hunger system(energy, but you can't die from not eating, just severely weakened at 0 energy), weight/inventory management, and of course tile-based turn based combat. The spin is the same, the player is forced to move east as the screen is slowly consumed from the west. I'll mostly compare this to the original OWH. I think there's a lot more variety in this game compared to the original, for better or worse. Player classes feel like they have a bit more variety now, for better or worse. The noncombat classes I feel are worse off in combat compared to the original, but their support abilities do feel stronger. There's a pretty large number of classes now compared to the original, I especially liked the Samurai class for their unique skill that became stronger every time it was used. On the continued topic of variety, for better or worse, I feel like this game is much harder, partially due to the increased enemy variety. There's a lot more threatening enemy types you can potentially encounter early on, and a lot of interesting boss type monsters that weren't in the original. A notable change, golems and dragon monsters are 2x2 tiles in this game, compared to the 1x1 monsters in the original, which lets you manouever around the environment when dealing with these enemy types in different ways compared to the original. Even more on the topic of variety, there's quite a few different NPC companions compared to the original. Some of them do feel quite weak to me, and some quite strong. Compared to the original though, I do feel like there's less charm to these NPCs, and they do feel less unique. On the flipside, I do believe they are generally easier to recruit in this game. EVEN MORE on the variety, there's a lot of new items and even equipment classes. I was especially happy to see the Fist type weapons in this game, something sadly lacking in the original. More on the gameplay, there's an odd Versus mode in this game that I've only tried minimally, it seems to be an odd asynchronous 1v1 adventure where you occasionally fight a copy of your opponent. There's an issue with the UI removing the analog clock in the original game, the boss and miniboss squad still spawn at certain times, but with the removal of the analog clock there's no indicator on when they arrive, which means you have less ability to carefully plan against these encounters. The music was nice, but unfortunately there's a relatively small number of tracks in this compared to the original - but that's to be expected since the original OWH just uses hundreds of freeware tracks, this game has unique BGM. And on the continued topic of audio, though I forgot to mention it at the companion section, but this game has voiced lines for a lot of the companion dialogues. Visual wise, it definitely looks a lot more polished here, both in sprite art and portrait art. Though I do have an issue with the screen layout, it feels a bit crunched for space vertically in comparison to the original. Speaking of screen layouts, the UI in this isn't optimal, it's definitely showing as a PC port of a console game, and lacking in customization options for certain buttons. While you may see some comments about it being 30FPS and how that may seem strange for a turn based game, it definitely feel a bit sluggish in responsiveness of controls, especially when compared to the original OWH. This game likes to go on sale fairly often these days, I would definitely recommend people to pick this up and give it a shot.
Compared to the original One Way Heroics, it's better in some ways, but worse in a lot more. I don't know that I'd recommend it over OWH+, given how extremely frustrating the parts that are worse are, but if you think you can live with them, it's definitely worth the 99 cents on sale. Things I liked:

More classes (like, a lot more, probably double the original game at least)
More types of weapons (knuckles, boomerangs, throwing bombs, guns)
Greater enemy variety (but this also kind of sucks, more on that later)
Large enemies like Golems and Dragons are now 2x2 instead of 1x1, allowing you to avoid them using terrain
Things I hated:

Many characters and much of the dialogue has been... "punched up" to be edgier and more in-your-face. Most notable is that characters are frequently lewd and inappropriate to a gratuitous degree, including a scene (text-only) where Dosey now licks your naked body to heal your wounds. This sort of thing doesn't usually bother me, but it really put me off here because of how tonally off all of it feels.
Slimes are a new type of common enemy that are completely immune to physical damage, which is funny, given how many of the classes in the game function purely off physical damage. They're difficult, if not impossible to avoid in most cases and if you can't deal with them, you're stuck with them following you everywhere.
Voice acting, while a nice touch, is frustrating as allies now vocally comment every single time you defeat an enemy. If you don't want to hear "Yatta! Yatta! Yatta! Yatta! Yatta!" every two seconds, you need to mute voices completely, as there's no toggle for ally chatter.
30 FPS lock, which, you might think, isn't that big of a deal for a strictly turn-based game, but boy do you feel it.
Oh, yeah, and they added traps to the game. You can toggle them to always be visible in the options menu (I'd suggest that you do). They're occasionally useful, but mostly a nothingburger; anyone complaining about them probably didn't play the game for longer than an hour.
Turn away now and go play "One Way Heroics" instead. If your here after playing "One Way Heroics" because you wanted more and got told this was a sequel - it isn't, do yourself a favour and don't subject yourself to this. You won't be getting more here. The game's base framerate feels awful, the controls are clunky, many changes have been made to the gameplay to make it frustrating and random. Its not a sequel to One Way Heroics, its a game inspired by it and just wants to use its name.
The 30fps compared to the original's 60fps is the only thing needed to mention how bad this is. Forget everything else.
Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics is a side scrolling roguelike where the world is consumed by darkness from the left side of the screen. The forced scroll creates constant forward pressure. Pixel art is clean and readable. Performance is stable with minimal load times. Combat is turn based on a grid. Movement and attacks each consume turns. Enemy variety introduces status effects and ranged threats. Positioning matters near cliffs and obstacles. Boss fights require resource planning rather than raw stats. Progression depends on loot drops and class selection. Equipment rarity influences damage and defense spread. Food and stamina items prevent attrition. Classes alter starting skills. Unlocks persist between runs and expand build options. Exploration rewards detours. Villages offer shops and quests. Treasure rooms contain high tier gear but cost time. Random map events provide bonuses or traps. The scrolling wall limits backtracking. Route choice defines risk. Audio uses simple chiptune loops. Sound effects confirm hits and item pickups. Music varies slightly by biome. No voice acting is present. Audio clarity keeps combat feedback clean. Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics succeeds through constant forward tension and light build variety. Narrative depth is low. It fits players who enjoy fast roguelike loops and positional resource management.
I just forgot to rate this game but yeah it's good. Play it. Forever.
