Surprisingly a very typical Rockstar game... Manhunt is the representation of the average GTA player in a linear-game with a generic sadistic-artsy storyline. Throughout the game you go through 20 levels (or "scenes" as they call it due to the movie theme they were aiming for) of hunting down lunatics of all kinds in a variety of ways. Considering the time of the game's release I assume this game was Rockstar's take on the stealth genre with games like Metal Gear Solid and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell and I think their overall idea is a welcome addition to the genre. However, you can expect the typical Rockstar Games features of the early 2000's... Little to no balance, unexplained/too quickly explained controls, bad PC port and overall a game clearly not meant to be played on PC. Let's start with the good. I think the game's age does very well for the game in terms of aesthetics - the old graphics and uncanny characters make the game much darker and scarier, the sound design helps a lot aswell with the music changing depending on the status (hidden/spotted), when you're spotted a (somewhat) loud music plays - making getting spotted scarier due to the drastic sudden change in sound. In addition, the heartbeart sounds are a bit tacky but I think they are a good way to represent the needed focus and silence when you're hidden. The game overall gives a large variety of weapons and tools which is very unexpected from a game like this. Something that really stuck out to me is the steady progress in the game and the fresh take on the stealth genre - yes you start the game like any other stealth (and most horror) games but as the game progresses it becomes more action oriented, while still keeping stealth optional for most levels. In Rockstar's defense they managed to avoid or atleast minimize some of the annoying features commonly found in games at the time - 'hostage' levels where you need to protect/save an NPC are very short or forgiving. The one level where you need to save hostages gives you a pretty creative concept - for every time you get spotted, a hostage dies, while it sounds like a typical unbeatable level from a 2000's game it's actually much easier than you'd think - you only need to rescue one hostage and once you free them they're gone - no need to transport them. There are 2 transport levels, both of which let you control the NPC by telling it when to follow you and when to stay, and for minor adjustments you can just push them. The complexity of the transport progresses, the first one lets you leave the NPC behind until you need to progress further and the second one requires you to stay close to the NPC or they will automatically run to you and risk you being detected. Thankfully these 2 levels, especially the second one, are insanely short. I also highly appreciate their take on both the stealth and the horror genres where they understand the stealth only sections get boring eventually so we get to actually fight with rapid action and guns blazing, but yes - for those who still like it most levels are playable with stealth. I also found the stealth execution system to be a nice addition - basically to get higher score from the execution you need to hold your attack for a longer time, the longer you hold it the more brutal the execution will be, with there being 3 levels - white (barely holding the attack), yellow (medium) and red (most brutal), I think it's also a nice addition because it requires you to truly plan your stealth and not just rely on a quick one-second luck with the detection system. And now for the bad... As expected from Rockstar this game didn't age well in terms of optimizations and most of the mechanics. You need to download a community-made patch to play this, otherwise you wouldn't even be able to finish the first level - while downloading the patch really isn't the end of the world, I think a company like Rockstar should still take care of their games. As for their mechanics, most of them are bad just because the game is old but a few stand out as inherently flawed. While the enemy vision system is overall pretty fair and stable, sometimes it has some quirks, the enemy paths can be at times very random and spot you just one milliesecond before you were about to execute them. Firearms are also a bit of a hit or miss (pun unintended), they were clearly not made for mouse and keyboard as sometimes you would just be clearing waves of enemies via headshots and in other times you would struggle to land even a handshot on one static enemy. The game also suffers from flaws of 2000's game design - levels either barely have any enemies and end before you notice or they have too many enemies, checkpoints while pretty innovative for the game's time can still be annoying sometimes, special mechanics which in this game is the crane level are insanely hard to control, I found myself just exiting the crane, leading the enemies to an open space and using stealth to hunt them down. I also think this game suffers from a common Rockstar Games flaw of tutorials being very short messages at the corner that appear for a few seconds and then never return again - I only found out executions have different levels by complete accident around the middle of the game. I also found myself in many levels not knowing what to do which resulted in me having to redo them multiple times. The story is very minimal and by today's standards from movies, TV shows and games it's rather predictable but I understand the story is mostly for the aesthetics of the game and it's clearly not a core feature of the game. It took me 11 hours to complete the game which I think is more than enough for a linear game of this genre. There are also 4 bonus levels you unlock by getting a high enough scores throughout the story mode levels. These bonus levels aren't anything too unique - challenges built on the game's mechanics but I appreciate the additional content. Overall I think that for it's time this is a phenomenal game, I finished it in 3 days and for me personally getting the motivation to play a new game nowadays and to also finish it so quickly is quite rare and should prove that this game is pretty fun. I think it's a very high quality PS2 game but given it's age I would only recommend it for people willing to deal with all the flaws of games from that era - I can only imagine how cool it was to play this game on the PS2 back in the day. 6/10 can't believe they never explored this game's city in one of the GTA games -einstein
great up until the shooting overtook the melee, then it lost me, still sick tho
