Finished Mafia II Definitive Edition in 15 hours. Good old fashioned video game for men. Empire Bay is a love letter to mid-century America. The cars, the music, the suits, the buildings, the whole atmosphere just oozes that postwar cool. No hand-holding, no safe spaces, no lecturing. Just a story about war, loyalty, family, ambition, and the consequences of the choices you make. Vito Scaletta isn't trying to be a role model. He's trying to survive and get ahead. That's it. That's the whole thing. The gunplay still hits hard. Recoil, weight, impact. Fists feel like fists. Driving feels deliberate, not arcade-y. The cops actually pull you over for speeding, which I personally loved. World ain't a sandbox full of checklists and map markers. It's a city you live in while the story unfolds around you. Every mission exists to serve the narrative, not pad out a playtime number or funnel you toward microtransactions. Henry, Joe, Leo, Falcone, Vinci, Clemente. Every character is memorable because they're written like real men with real motivations, not cardboard stand-ins designed to satisfy a checklist. Joe Barbaro alone is worth the price of admission. The restaurant sitdowns, the cigarette breaks, the quiet drives where nothing gets said but everything hangs in the air. That's cinema. Joe Barbaro alone is worth the price of admission. He's loud, funny, loyal to a fault, and he'd take a bullet for you without thinking. The restaurant sitdowns, the cigarette breaks, the quiet drives where nothing gets said but everything hangs in the air. That's cinema. Compare this to what we get now. Most modern games can't go five minutes without reminding you of the message. Politics jammed into every line of dialogue. Characters with no edge, no flaws, no humanity. Story by committee. Design by focus group. Mafia II didn't care about any of that. It had a vision and committed to it fully. Pros: - Authentic 1940s/50s atmosphere - Straightforward, gripping crime story - Great cast of characters with actual depth - Gunplay and driving still feel good - soundtrack is perfection - Chapters are paced like episodes of a prestige drama Cons: - Could've used more side content - Some textures in the Definitive Edition could be better - Ended and I wanted more Verdict: 9/10. A game that respected its audience and trusted its tone. They don't make them like this anymore. Play it, soak it in, and pour one out for Joe.
beauty game.
Solid Mafia title, even though Mafia !'s definitive edition entry is much better. A few bugs here and there but overall fun, however I do prefer Mafia's I's story over this one. Game cleverly ties into the story of Mafia I. The DLCs are trash. I do not recommend playing them. Joe's adventures does tell some nice details to the main story though, and I recommend looking up the story online instead of playing it. Seriously the DLCs are painful to play; full of annoying time trial arcade missions.
Outdated GTA wannabe. The gameplay is old and outdated but has its moments of fun. The gameplay would be forgivable if I had enjoyed the story, but the story was also bad and not as good as the first Mafia. The Mafia 1 remake is stunning visually compared to this game. This is because Mafia 1 was essentially a full remake compared to this low effort "remake". I have such an issue with the story because it is such a monumental downgrade compared to the first Mafia. In the first game Tommy has actual character development and is faced with the realities of the decisions he has made. It shows that he contemplates the murder of people and how it affects him. It also shows how he really opposes the killings of innocent people but he is in too deep to really do anything about it. When you compare the first game to the story of Mafia 2 you have Vito who just does whatever all of these other evil men tell him to do without any sort of character development or contemplation. He is just a brainless goon that shows no depth. The choices he makes and how the story progresses do not make sense to me at times.
Vito vouches for Henry even though he was the whole reason he went to prison. It makes no damn sense for Vito to think he would be a good addition to the crew. Poor story writing where the main character is too stupid to realize this and turns out Henry is the rat, wow big surprise.
