Pros: You can build actual working castles with walls, gates, towers, and rain arrows on Viking boats like you’re in a movie. Plus the devs never quit – they’re still dropping free updates years later, which is wild. Cons: you kinda see everything the game has to offer in one or two runs. It’s not some 500-hour monster. You build, you defend, you probably die to fire, you start over. But honestly? Starting over is half the fun. For the price of Brunch you get a kingdom to rule and a 90% chance to watch it burn. It’s cozy, chaotic, and weirdly addictive. Not a hardcore strategy brain-burner, more like “I’ll just play 20 minutes” and then it’s 2am. If you like cute games that suddenly get stressful, this is your thing. Go be king. Just… build some wells first. Trust me.
This game is in dire need of a tutorial. So many things that could be explained by little tooltips as you play out your first run. Maybe some people find this kind of "figure it out yourself" thing fun but its just an absolute headache for me. Also just a straight up live supply/demand infographic would be nice instead of "last years report". And having seperate food storages is a management nightmare and feels like a waste of resources if you don't get it exactly right because of the fact that your citizens have to man each and every building you place. Carts don't transfer specific items and getting iron to a blacksmith seems impossible for some reason. Idk it feels like there needs to be a UI that better explains what is going on at all times, instead of having to click into specific buildings and play detective all the time.
I absolutely adore this game. It's a simple enough gameplay loop that it's the game I go to when I want to play *something*, but don't have the brain energy for too many micro-decisions. It's not a time waster but it's not demanding. It's the level of sandbox that I crave, something where all my decisions are technically allowed but it's always pretty clear what the goals are and what the path forward is. The music is fairly pleasing, I don't get tired of listening to it after a long play session. I'm not frustrated by the time scaling either, where I've found in other games the top speed is far too slow or where the normal speed is already overwhelming. Flicking between each time scale is always purposeful and the game ticks by at a nice pace on max speed when you just want to see your resource numbers change. The flavour is fun, like each peasant having its own little digestible humorous profile, and having statues for the dragons that visit. There are some UI bugs that make it... interesting... to navigate at times, like some UI popups that require me to click next to a button to actually click on the button. But as long as you figure out what to do it's still playable and doesn't do this often. And maybe it's just that I still have more yet to learn about some of the mechanics (stockpiles and transport vehicles) but they never actually seem to work for me/contribute anything to the gameplay. Each time I try something gets stuck, like the peasants are so slow to fill up a dock or stockpile with the resource I want, and it's just easier to let them walk to get the items they need rather than using transporters. So I just filter them out of my islands - it's much easier to finetune the resource management when there's less moving parts, and it still works perfectly fine (as evidenced by managing to get all of the achievements without understanding how to make these work properly). The only other negative I'd throw here is that in coming back to the store page and seeing the pricetag, I don't know if its a "full" enough game to warrant nearly $30AUD. One playthrough standalone, I'd say the features and gameplay feel like $20ish, maybe. But to be honest I've enjoyed it so much over the past many years that I definitely feel like its earned it's price for me, purely based on it's replayability. Thank you to Vikkstar for exposing me to this game all those years ago. This is a game where you don't need to rely on goals to push you forward and the dopamine that comes with it (if you're like me and feel like you get the most enjoyment out of the first 30mins of a game and then get bored when you have to start doing things on your own/making your own decisions). You just plod along, doing what you need to do to fill out your island and balance the resources and watch the numbers go up. It's nice to see the developers are still putting content updates out as well, even after nearly 10 years. TL;DR: Very satisfying, 100% recommend for any cosy casual resource management game lovers.
This was one of the first city-builder games I had played, in fact this game was the reason I bought a pc back in 2018. This game has just so much raw gameplay enjoyment for me I believe this is worth almost anyones money. Of course I doubt many people will put more than 100+ hours into it, but it is a game you can always revisit and build your kingdom in a different way. I encourage this for people new to city-builder games and anyone in general.
I'm not super into city builders but to me it felt pretty simplistic. A limited number of buildings and not many ways for things to spiral out of control kept me feeling like I was always firmly on top of things. I didn't try the survival mode so perhaps the game is more unforgiving there, but my time was spent building an aesthetically pleasing city more than anything. This could be a negative to some, however I found myself wanting to play more city builder games so maybe it's best to think of this game as an onboarding ramp to the genre. My only real gripe with the game is with quality of life features. I wish I could move buildings or least move the keep after placing it. I wish ogres weren't limited to attacking only if you build a wall around everything. I had fortified areas with small towns outside the walls, but because of that every time Vikings attacked they were ogreless and therefore such a non-issue I barely noticed them after a point. Overall though, the game was fun and I've enjoyed my time with it.
The game is just fun and pleasing. It has creative so I could get adjusted to controls, mechanics and more so im ready for the main game and it's so fun. Already spent an actual day on it from waking up to going to bed. Easily 10/10 game for me.
Kingdoms and Castles is definitely my city builder of choice. It’s really easy to get into if you’re new to the genre because it’s so straightforward and quite basic, but I mean that in a good way. I hadn’t played it since 2020, so I had to get back to it this year because it has been updated so many times that I really felt like it was my first time playing it. It’s the kind of game you can get lost in for hours, no matter if you’re a casual or a hardcore player. I lean towards casual, but still like the thrill of viking and dragon attacks every once in a while
As a newcomer to this genre, I found this game a very fun introduction at a low cost and low size. Though the late game is a little repetitive, I think the simplicity works in its favor.
