I have rarely played a game with more love put into it by the developer. An incredibly dense and interesting world with very fun gameplay. Excellent support by the dev, I reported an issue today and it literally was fixed within less than 24 hours. If you have any interest in RPGs, please throw some money their way.
Fantastic game for RPG fans with an absolutely amazing developer. You can just feel the effort and consideration put into this game.
This game is overly complex with so many menus, sub menus and sub-sub menus, it's ridiculous. Then, it gives you instructions/quests to use items that you don't have, doesn't give you any clarification of where to go or what to do next and is basically aimless from what I can tell. It's very confusing and frustrating from the beginning. I've started it twice now and still can't figure out how to save game, so I'll have to start from scratch a third time if I want to give it another try. I wouldn't recommend it unless you enjoy figuring out how to play games without the basic instructions needed to do so. Update: After giving it a third try, I still can't recommend it. I finally figured out one of the first quests, which was to wear an item, which seams simple enough. However, the item is not in your inventory. You have to go to the Equipment menu, click on the location of the body where you would wear the item and then it gives you the option to equip the item. But it still never appears in your inventory and it doesn't show up in the equipment menu until you have it equipped. So if you didn't have a quest to use it you would never know you even had it. I finally figured out how to save game, which is another trip down the menu, sub menu, sub sub menu rabbit hole. I then continued trying to work on the quests I had been given, but walking to the edge of the map doesn't cause the next map to load. I searched the menus and the world map. Walked all around the map I was on, but gained nothing. So now I am left to spend who knows how much time figuring out how to leave the map I am on so I can continue my journey? It's ridiculous. I've played actual "Mystery" games that are easier to figure out than this.
This game is easy to spend all day playing; it's got a surprising amount of game customizations available, has fun quests and a solid (if not slightly generic) world to explore. I do wish that there was more color/less dreariness, but for the price you get a lot of hours of content to play through in multiple ways.
This was made in RPG Maker, which comes with a whole lot of baggage. It means some things that would be a UI selection are instead items you need to use to get said UI to pop up (see: using your Fame to upgrade things like "able to have more companions" and "get a few more stat points", which I found out quite a while in) but once you learn it, it just becomes an annoyance. That said, it's very well made and largely lets you do what you want, Skyrim-style. There's a main story that you'll need to follow at some point, but there's so much content, characters you can recruit, and stuff to do that will keep you entertained for quite a while. I spent a whole lot of time just wandering around and doing stuff before doing the storyline after a while, because I am an explorer. The combat is turn-based and kind of familiar to anyone who plays this stuff, but it's been changed enough to be both awesome and painful. Awesome in that there's a lot of ways to affect combat (bleeding, knocking someone off balance, stunning, arrows that do all kinds of status things. That said, it's all percentages, and I think it's a pretty raw percentage so there's an awful lot of RNGesus happening with these. With three levels of bad guy, it can get REAL difficult with some fights. That said, it's a low magic fantasy world. Magic's there, but it's pretty fickle, and the most powerful spells can only be cast through staves. There's also crafting. Unfortunately, there's also encumbrance, which is really important to know that you can upgrade your party size. I am a collector. I grab everything. Also worth noting: There's levels, but no classes. Your companions have a list of equipment they can and cannot use (but also a unique ability!) , but your main character can do anything they want to spend points on. The main story is pretty good - not a tear-jerker, but a solid one. The side quests range from rote to rather interesting. Overall, this is a pretty positive, solid experience. You'll find a couple of stressful spots depending on how you approach things with your character, but I enjoyed it as a nice, open-world romp from an indie developer.
I'm giving this game a very qualified thumbs-up, mostly because I love this big messy kitchen sink. Plague everywhere, a million little towns, a ton of quests, resource scarcity, permadeath. Mechanically, it is a mess - battles quickly become monotonous, skills are pointless, and you can do more damage to ghosts with a sword than the "kill ghosts" spell. It feels like a fun sandbox to romp around in, but most towns are very samey. I doubt I'll finish the game, but I'm glad it exists.
Best time I ever had in a game that I died all the time lol took restarting the game 4 times to get the hang of the things you can pick from but after that its still not easy to beat things but in a good way had a lot of fun so far tons of side quests and stuff to do! 9/10 for sure
While there are several things about the game I am unhappy with, I overall do really enjoy the game and would recommend it further. Personally I really enjoy the lore, vibe and setting, but movement is almost unbearably slow and does take a lot of patience although for me, I would rank it 3# on a list of annoyances. In the end I am having fun and I think you might too.
Like other Corrosive Studios games, Lawless Lands is a bit of a rough gem - the settings are usually grim, dialogue is serviceable, but where the games truly shine is the sense of slowly growing your character into someone more powerful and more able to navigate the grim world they inhabit. In that sense, Lawless Lands is no exception and stands out as in my view the best of what Corrosive Studios has to offer. This is IMO their best setting and with the best balance of progression in their games. The studio also still continues to add on to their games, even to this day. Easy recommend for me.
