This game is a serious mixed bag. Perhaps the best way to approach this is to compare it to its predecessor, The Banner Saga. Then I'll go into Pros and Cons. Gameplay Overall, the gameplay is better than Banner Saga. Combat is better. The addition of magic cards adds some flexibility to gameplay. There is also a greater variety of characters to use. Banner Saga discouraged the player from taking out one enemy at a time because the remaining enemies would get more turns, and this game has corrected that. The game hops between three groups, but... I'll get to that later. Characters Generally, the characters are deeper and more thought-out than the ones in Banner Saga, though most of them don't matter in the slightest. The game also gives some time to talk to each of the characters and get to know more about them, which fills in a couple details about the world. There are also more characters. Plot Compared to Banner Saga, the plot is... larger. I'll get into more details further on, but the simple version here is that the story of Banner Saga was less complicated but ultimately made sense from a certain point of view. That is not true of this game. Music The music is on par with Banner Saga's, and there's more of it, I think. Now I'll get into the Pros and Cons. This is all from one complete playthrough. Pros Gameplay - Gameplay is overall solid. The hopping between groups of characters is a bit off-putting, and is, in my opinion, a squandered idea. Characters - The characters are generally good, interesting and likeable. Most of them have more depth than alot of games' characters. Unfortunately, many of them are completely irrelevant, and you don't find out what happens to them after the story. Music - The same kind of music from Banner Saga. It fits the game well, even if none of it is particularly memorable. Cons The Map - The map is technically an upgrade to Banner Saga, but it fails overall. The map doesn't show political boundaries, so everything that is talked about between characters is not able to be found on the map. The game offers different paths to choose, but in almost every case the only difference is whether you want a fight or to get to where you're going faster. Lastly, the map has many details that are utterly meaningless, which creates the facade of depth. Overall, I like the idea, but it's poorly executed. The Plot - Without spoiling too much, the plot is convoluted and nothing is truly explained, even by the people who know everything. The game introduces no fewer than eight ethnic/cultural groups, but tells you almost nothing about each of them, and the map doesn't help. There are parts of the world's history that is important to the plot but are never really explained. It's not even clear why the things in the plot happen. All you get is guesses and supposition, which sometimes contradict each other. While the game could have explored three different perspectives and areas to build the world, they don't. All three groups are basically the same, plot-wise, just with different characters. There are certain elements that depend on how soon you got to a place. but you have no idea of this. While that's realistic, it feels oppressive because you don't have much control over how fast you travel. Overall, I believe that the writers had grand ideas and a well thought-out plot, but it wasn't properly executed in the game. This makes it difficult to care about the characters. Bugs There are a few cases where things happen but there is no explanation and no one seems to notice. There are various typos. So overall, a fairly enjoyable game, but it has serious shortcomings that prevent it from being a true work of art.
Disappointed is the word I'd use to describe my feeling playing this game, and the best way I can describe this game is it's a pizza cutter; all edge and no point. It has a beautiful art style reminiscent of Banner Saga, but that's honestly the best thing going for it. The combat lacks the depth of strategy in that series, and feels very unrewarding and clunky. the characters are needlessly edgy and trying too hard to be "cool", or at least what someone might find cool. I think I've seen more descriptions of dead fetuses and pregnant women in this game than I have the rest of my life combined, and it just comes across as rather tasteless and trying too hard to be dark. It really feels like someone didn't understand the subtle horror of Banner Saga and how grim that setting really is and thought "nah, this needs more dead babies and masochists, THAT is dark". It's just pointless shock value without any reason behind it. I tried to keep going with this, but time and again when it had an opportunity to develop the story or characters, it just decided to try and be edgy and dark for the sake of it, and not even doing a good job of it. You're way better off playing Banner Saga and not this, you get the same beautiful art and interesting ideas but with better writing and execution without the endless try hard edgy stuff.
Ash of Gods: A "Younger Sibling" That Shines and Stumbles on Its Own
Quick Verdict: A compelling "choose your own adventure" experience with a solid tactical system and unbeatable visuals. However, it is hindered by a subpar Spanish translation and combat mechanics that eventually become predictable. Art & Sound A Visual Masterpiece: If you appreciate hand-drawn art, this game is a constant delight. Every frame oozes personality and detail. Enthralling Soundtrack: Simply masterful. The music doesn't just accompany the game; it enkindles the narrative and heightens the tension of every moment. Charismatic Cast: The characters are well-written and manage to immerse you in their struggle from the very beginning. Gameplay & Combat The Card System: A brilliant addition that injects the right amount of randomness into a system that might otherwise feel like pure arithmetic. Difficulty Curve: Deceptive. Having completed the game on Hardcore (in my 4th run), I can say it forces you to plan meticulously, especially regarding caravan injuries. However, once you "solve" the class mechanics, the mid-game difficulty evaporates as the AI fails to adapt. Lack of Dynamism: This is the game's weakest link. The battles cry out for special events, reinforcements, or specific objectives beyond simply wiping out the enemy. Without these, the tactical layer eventually feels static. Narrative & Management Overwhelming Lore: The world-building is vast—packed with regions, races, and names—to the point where it can be difficult to follow the thread. The story has enough depth for a trilogy, but it demands significant effort from the player to keep track of everything. Caravan & Strixes Management: Making choices feels "unrewarding" in the sense that you never truly know if you made the right call. I consider this a design success; it perfectly captures the uncertainty of a desperate journey. The Major Flaw: Localization The Spanish Translation: Terrible. It’s a genuine shame that a game with such rich vocabulary and a heavy focus on reading suffers from such a poor translation. It frequently breaks the immersion in a story that relies on its prose. Final Thoughts: Ash of Gods: Redemption is a great spiritual successor to The Banner Saga. Despite the lack of variety in combat objectives and the disastrous translation, it offers a deeply enjoyable experience for those who love to read and strategize. If you are looking for a dark plot to lose yourself in and aren't afraid of high-stakes resource management, it is well worth your time. Recommended for: Fans of tactical strategy and dark fantasy who prioritize atmosphere and narrative consequences over mechanical perfection.
The game came out on PS4, XboxOne and Switch, yet somehow the PC Version does not have controller support?
Score: 6.5 / 10 Ash of Gods: Redemption possesses elements I genuinely like, contrasted by issues that ultimately led me to abandon my playthrough. At times I could see the foundation of something much stronger underneath it all, but the positives could not compensate for larger design issues that drained by desire to play. The world, presentation, and tone all seem on par with the Banner Saga initially, and the game clearly wants to create a serious narrative experience built around difficult choices and emotional consequence as well, but the culmination of the experience felt more forced and emotionally hollow to me rather than immersive. Visuals & Presentation: The artistic presentation is one of the strongest aspects of the game. The environments, portraits, and overall visual style are beautiful and atmospheric, and the game has a very distinct identity. It immediately evokes comparisons to Banner Saga in terms of presentation and structure, though it ultimately didn’t reach the same emotional impact for me. Despite how visually appealing the game is, something about it feels disconnected underneath the surface. The best comparison I can make is that it felt like walking through the Louvre Museum and discovering all the paintings were replicas instead of originals. Everything looks convincing at first glance, but there’s a lack of emotional authenticity that becomes harder to ignore the longer you play. Characters & Narrative: The story initially seemed interesting, and there are definitely moments where the game hints at stronger emotional or philosophical themes. The issue for me was that the decision system constantly undermined my ability to become naturally immersed in the characters or the world. The game repeatedly emphasizes that choices have consequences, but many of those consequences feel arbitrary or poorly telegraphed. Instead of feeling like I was making meaningful decisions based on character motivation or understanding of the world, I often felt like I was stumbling into hidden fail states. This created a strange sense of paranoia while playing. I became hesitant to fully explore dialogue or interact naturally with the narrative because I was worried that simply engaging with the game in good faith might trigger some negative outcome I had no reasonable way to predict. Ironically, this made the story feel less meaningful rather than more impactful. Instead of strengthening immersion, the system made me feel disconnected from the narrative because I no longer trusted the game to respond in a coherent or emotionally satisfying way. And as a result, I found myself looking up guides to try to avoid catastrophe rather than spending time engaging with the game itself. Two examples without too much of a spoiler. Early in the game, asking a character a question will result in their death. Likewise, choosing the fabric for a gift incorrectly will result in a character death. In Banner Saga, you may not always know the outcome of a choice, but most of the significant choices left it very clear that the decision would matter significantly, while many other choices would result in better rewards or artifacts, leaving more room to simply play, and only a few moments where you were keenly aware a person could die if you didn't choose well, as the game and story telegraphed this more naturally. That is not the case here. Gameplay: The tactical gameplay feels almost identical to Banner Saga in some ways, though they do adapt and evolve some of the mechanics to their own design. Overall, gameplay felt good though a bit underwhelming without the same sense of narrative awe that propelled me to play The Banner Saga. Let's be clear, gameplay is meant to support the story and not the other way around, which is why I think I felt so disengaged from playing most of the time. Overall Experience: I wanted to like Ash of Gods: Redemption far more than I actually did. There are clearly good ideas here, and the game has strong atmosphere and presentation, but the execution left me emotionally detached rather than engaged. The constant fear of making the “wrong” decision without meaningful context made the game feel restrictive instead of immersive. Rather than encouraging roleplaying or emotional investment, it pushed me toward second-guessing everything I did. Final Verdict: Ash of Gods: Redemption is a visually striking game with interesting ideas and an ambitious narrative structure, but for me the emotional payoff never matched the design intent. The decision system felt more arbitrary than meaningful, and over time that drained much of the immersion and attachment I wanted to feel toward the world and characters. There’s still an audience for this kind of harsh, consequence-driven design, especially for players who enjoy experimentation and uncertainty, but for me it ultimately felt like a beautiful replica pulling at the heartstrings of past experience, rather than creating an compelling emotional experience of its own. In many ways, it resulted in contrasting nostalgia, reminding me of how much I loved the Banner Saga, rather than developing a personal connection of its own to sustain my experience.
The cartography is spectacular and detailed, the combat is simple yet satisfying, leveling up my characters and keeping them alive is a good feeling, the dialogue is good but sometimes feels rushed or to many sentences in one paragraph-kinda like this. The style and colours of the maps and characters is pleasing to the eye-I've only just started and am about 13 hours in. So far there is a bunch of history and lore throughout the world to make you really think about the events in a wider scale.
