Good Job Administrator
I'm not too familiar with city builders as a genre, but IXION manages to tell a compelling story of exploration and survival, full of tense moments and uncertainty, while maintaining a solid city / space station simulation. It's not perfect, there have been a few bugs and glitches I encountered, but even so it is well worth playing. Just make sure you save regularly and don't play until 3am if you can help it.
This is one of my favorite games. I love the gameplay, the mechanics, and the space theme of running a colony ship. I just wish there was an free roam mode or something. the story is very linear. It is a lot of fun, but get old the third or fourth time.
This review is not easy to write. Why? Because I really liked the concept to this game, and the story beats and they felt different. I would recommend it for this reason, and also the fact that you can change the difficulty of things. I don't know if it's just personally experience or what, but this game was very stressful to me on normal default settings that eventually I just had to lower it because it was too much micromanaging for me to keep up with, and I play Hearts of Iron. This game had a lot of issues with it that really bothered me, especially the last chapter. I won't spoil anything, but I had to reattempt the last chapter multiple times. Overall, I thought that the music, the environment, and the space jumping really kept me hooked. Hopefully the team behind this game will make other games around this IP, not necessarily the same genre, but more like it. Maybe the next game could be the colonists building their lives on the new planet. None of the issues presented in my review take away from this game, it delivers.
Kind of boring. A lot of waiting around gathering and processing resources. Entropic elements feel very contrived and consist almost exclusively of the hull constantly degrading and accidents occurring. The rate of decay and frequency of accident occurrence are both so high that it completely breaks the suspension of disbelief. There are some morale and stability mechanics too, but so far, 6.5 hours in, they're not a factor. I really wanted to like this game, but have to rate it a solid 'meh'. It has some good elements, but there are far better games out there. Will probably try at least one more session and might update or at least add more detail. Another thing I found challenging to believe is that they spent all this effort building a giant mobile space station, but had no plans for the interior layout? There are these insects farms, but no inputs to the farms...what exactly are the insects eating? Waste is being purged? Into space? That's a lot of mass that could probably be used for something else...there is eventually a recycling plant of sorts but it takes a lot of research to get there. There's a lot of things like this that just seem to violate basic space engineering concepts. The probe situation is pretty boring too. I don't want to spend half an hour moving my pointer around to figure out where to send the probe...and how about a confirmation popup? Several times I accidentally clicked and deployed a probe to the wrong location. The resource collection algorithm is broken, have the silicon resource on high priority on the map and on the shuttles for collection, but they don't collect it. Can't build electronics. There is some good stuff too, don't get me wrong, it's a decent game, just overrated and not always well thought out. Beautiful graphics. Building space is an extremely limited resource and figuring out how to lay out your city in a bottle is and interesting and sometimes frustrating exercise in optimization. Personnel management is a little clunky...and what exactly are non-workers doing? Can I put the useless eaters back in cryostasis? Oh wait this was supposed to be the good parts...oh well.
One of the very few games to make my clean plate club. It managed to keep me engaged enough in the progression and story, increasing the difficulty but still rewarding planning and perseverance, which is a difficult balance to make for a game like this.
