What starts as a simple campfire and a sleeping bag can grow into a thriving town with shops, fountains, flower beds, and windmills.

Sell your harvest and foraged goods to earn Dinks, and reinvest them to help your town flourish.
As your town grows, new shops will open, visitors will stop by—and some might even decide to stay for good. Celebrate with festivals and build a vibrant, lively town, whether you're playing solo or with friends.

I have spent a lot of time in this game and there are elements I truly enjoy. In this review I'm focusing on the negatives because my friend just got kicked from a multiplayer save we have together at the end of a long in-game day. They lost an in-game day's worth of work, time, and about ~.5 million in game money (earned by selling trapped blooming frillies for a board quest. they also got 2 perfect emeralds and those have disappeared). This is very frustrating and I'm unsure if we'll play this game together again after that. These are why I am rating it 'do not recommend': 1. Multiplayer keeps crashing and losing all my coop players' progress. It is incredibly frustrating and going to stop my group from playing it together entirely because it keeps happening. There are other comments mentioning this. This should be fixed by now or remove being described as 'multiplayer'. 2. Combat mechanics are abysmal. 3. NPCs repeat phrases too often/say similar things. More on this below. 4. Often when I click 'accept' to an NPC quest it says I didn't agree. This keeps happening IDK WHY 5. Not being able to put insects/fish in chests is annoying. If the point is to not save them why can I set them on the ground in terrariums? 6. Why does the fish pond rely on the trophy to build? same with the bug breeding container thing? I sold them for money only to realize I'd have to wait another whole year to be able to build those. I shouldn't have to check the wiki before making decisions. And it doesn't even make sense to use a trophy to build a pond. 7. Why do I have to buy a mine pass every time I want to go down to the mines? 30,000$ is a lot early game and it's just an annoying thing I need to remember every time. Furthermore if John is closed it's a pain. It doesn't make sense story-wise to need a pass either. I already paid for the mine shaft and materials it doesn't make sense to have to pay for a pass every time I go down. 8. Why are there license for EVERYTHING? it's so annoying. Some NPCs even joke about needing a license for everything in the game itself, so you know it's too much. 9. Why do hearts go down so fast with NPCs? It's gotten to the point where I am doing like a quest for each and every NPCs (so 10+) per a day. that's not why I'm playing this game especially with the lack of uniqueness/individuality of NPCs (Discussed later). 10. Setting up renter houses to maximize rent is a pain to balance foot path space and valuable items 11. I like having the animals but I didn't realize I have to pet AND clean them with the brush this whole time I've been playing 12. Why can't I craft a basic pickaxe, fishing rod, etc. (I have to buy from John)? I can't craft those but I can make a copper pickaxe/etc. It's just an annoying limiter. 13. Why can I only buy things from NPCs that I've been given/bought before? For instance, Melvin's catalogue only has furniture I've bought or been given before. This is the same for multiple NPCs like Clover. If you don't want to just put it all in the catalogue, maybe put a randomized X subset of the Y total potential clothes/furniture/etc. in the catalogue every day? 14. Why are so many NPC quests random fish/bugs? The narrative doesn't make sense. Like why does John want a fly repeatedly? Why does Rayne, who per the wiki doesn't like animal products, want a fish? 15. Building on 3, NPCs don't really have distinct enough stories/backgrounds/dialogue. I wouldn't mind this if NPC interaction wasn't pushed so hard with valuable quests, the permit points relying on interactions sometimes, having new people move in to sell things relying on it, etc. Also I get some NPCs being rude initially like Franklin, but it doesn't make sense for them to be equally as rude when I get their hearts higher. Also, NPC voices are annoying. 16. The whole square nature of the ground can be frustrating at times, for instance trying to trap an animal and it's at the perfect spot to not be able to put it right on top of them. 17. Why is stuff at Jimmy's boat so expensive? And why is it so hard to find certain things like the 'doggo collar'? I want a dog but this is going to take forever. 18. It makes more sense for Theodore to give permit points for stuff donated to the museum scaled to the value of the item. I didn't want to donate expensive fish/bugs because it'd be better to get the money. But if you scale permit points with the value of the item (and maybe just have a floor value like 100), it motivates donation and makes more sense overall. 19. There are a lot more small irritations. For instance when I harvest some pumpkins, I have to click harvest and then click pick up. It should automatically go into my inventory when I harvest something. It should automatically go in my inventory when I break iron/copper/etc., AND SO ON. Why can Rayne still sell duplicate seeds, I've seen year old complaints from this? Quality of life stuff in general is lacking. 20. It just feels like there's no true 'heart' in it and I can't describe it any other way. This cannot be compared to Stardew as I've seen many times. I don't need games to be groundbreaking to enjoy them but this didn't make the mark for me.
A Good Game with a Frustrating Dealbreaker
This is a good game. Having only played about 9 hours at this point, I cannot call it great, but it has brought me a lot of fun during these hours. However, there is a huge deal breaker: disconnection in multiplayer resets your progress and inventory for the entire day. I played this game with my girlfriend, with her as the host. We live in the same apartment and played over LAN. In those 9 hours, I experienced three disconnections. The first time, I did not care much — still in the curiosity phase, I simply went back into the game and redid what I had done. The second time, I had worked hard that day doing quests in order to reach a certain permission level and purchase a permit I had been longing for. Then I disconnected, and a whole day's work was wasted. The third time, I had purchased the metal detector permit and happily dug up a lot of treasures — enough to fill my entire travelling bag from Fletcher. I even stumbled upon a mine and managed to collect some copper ore I needed. It had been such a joyful experience, right up until I disconnected just as we were about to call it a night. Everything was gone: my inventory, my travelling bag, and even on the map — the mine would be empty if I were to visit it again. I cannot describe how demoralizing it was. After a long day, I came home looking forward to playing, and this is what I was met with. The game is good and may even be great for players who stick to single player. The disconnection issue is also not something the majority seems to experience. Still, in my frustration, I searched the internet for a solution or workaround, only to find others sharing the same frustration — and no fix in sight. The game holds a very positive overall rating, which reflects that it is genuinely satisfying for most players. I am writing this review to complete the picture, to represent a minority opinion, and to leave a warning for players who are looking forward to enjoying this game with someone close to them.
Good game, but it still has some frustrations.
People will compare this game to "Animal Crossing" on the Nintendo Switch, which is not surprising. If you’ve played AC before like I have, you’ll notice a lot of similarities. You start the game with nothing, placing camps and taking what you can from the wild until you have enough to build new structures and invite people to join your newly created town. The main difference is that there is some light combat in this game in terms of hunting and capturing wild animals. Most of the time, you’ll sell them for money, but some can be kept as pets. Another difference is the vehicles. The vehicles in this game are very cool and a lot of fun, a jet ski that helps you cross the ocean in a heartbeat, a tractor that helps you manage crops in mass, and a helicopter that you can use to fly around. These are great additions and probably the best features that set it apart from Animal Crossing. I found that the early and mid-game are probably the most fun. In the early game, money can be hard to come by, but each upgrade or license is quite cheap, so you unlock a lot of things quickly. There are always new things waiting for you to explore. In the mid-game, you start to get the hang of it. You learn the best schedule for each day and how to maximize your income. However, when you reach the endgame, that’s when the game starts to fall short. You would expect life to become easier because you have all the upgrades and improvements. But instead, the cost of licenses keeps increasing to absurd levels, while the prices of crops, ores, fish, bugs, and everything you find in the wild stay the same. As a result, it becomes a grind, you spend days or even weeks just to get one more upgrade or license. It gets very boring. Another frustration is that all shops have their own opening and closing times, as well as weekly holidays. This becomes confusing to the point where you start to wonder what the purpose is this? just to confuse the player? Sometimes NPCs are stuck inside their closed shops while you have quests that require you to talk to them that same day. Nevertheless, I did have a good time with it. 220 hours of gameplay doesn’t come easily if the game is bad. I managed to get 100% of the achievements. It’s a good game, but not quite the best.
Great alternative for Animal crossing fans, its like Animal crossing and Stardew valley had a baby and sent it to live in Australia. Highly reccomended.
Dinkum is an amazing game! However, if you plan to play it for many hours, there is a serious issue you should be aware of. I also want to make it clear that this is based entirely on my personal experience. After taking a break and coming back, I found that the same core problem is still present. If you enjoy decorating especially creating beautiful lakes, surrounding them with flowers, and placing your animals there, unfortunately, forget about it. Even in enclosed, carefully planned areas with fences and gates, there is still a high chance that crocodiles will spawn and kill your animals. If you are distracted or playing without sound, be extra careful when opening your inventory. At any moment, a crocodile can appear and ruin your experience. It is extremely frustrating to spend hours and hours in such a lovely game, only to see crocodiles spawning in places that were clearly designed to be safe. A cozy game should feel peaceful and relaxing, but unfortunately, that is not the case here. I truly enjoyed this game, but as long as this issue persists, I can no longer recommend it. :((
Bought this game to play with my gf, we both have wired connection and play right next to each other however every 10-15 minutes she gets booted and she looses all her progress and items effectively killing our mood/ambition to play this game. Super chill and relaxing game turned frustrating. i cannot give this game a good review because of that. Both of us would immediately refund if we could.
I've only ever played this in co-op, and I think that's where the issue lies. I have a pet peeve against co-op games that don't let everyone progress and see things, and the main person was the only person being able to progress, where the rest of us had to keep asking what we were meant to do next. It's also insanely frustrating that the store only sells one item a day, so if you and your friend are both out of it at the same time because it broke, only one person can buy it. Only one person can talk to the NPC at a time, too. So most mornings it was aggressively trying to get to the NPC first. The only real goals of the game are the main quest of bringing villagers in and the daily quests, and I really need some sort of motivation to keep going with games rather than just making it pretty. I don't think I saw everything the game has to offer, and everyone keeps telling me to try again because I would have more fun playing it alone, but I feel like it probably just isn't for it with the lack of direction and plot. Finished? No (DNF probably) Steam Achievements? Lots of grinding. Steam Deck? Never tried! Rating? 5/10 My curator page: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45865425-CozyAriGames/ Full videos on Youtube.
