In A Nutshell
Imperatum is a sci-fi Action RPG set in a distant future where humanity has spread through the galaxy, but has nearly been wiped out by a mysterious alien threat. You, as one of mankind's best agents, will need to find a scientist that has critical information about the threat. As in any ARPG, the main activities you will perform in Imperatum are exploration, looting, quests, customizing your character choosing from different build possibilities, and of course fight tons of enemies. This game chooses a pretty classic approach, delivering the classic formula in most things. The exploration part is average, but also crippled by the game map not being reliable and displaying structures and paths that do not reflect the actual level layout most of the time, so it will be mostly useless. Looting is aswell average as in any other ARPG, but it has some quality of life problems, because you actually will soon have too much loot on your hands, and will constantly be using your Drone Companion to recycle unwanted stuff, because of your inventory filling at an alarming rate. Also, absence of loot filters, sorting or any form of auto-loot or auto-sell functions are issues in a game of this kind. Class builds will feature only three branches: Psyker, Marksman and Brawler, respectively the archetypes of Mage, Ranger and Warrior. Each skill tree only has 16 skills, both active and passive ones, each with five levels, that will just scale the ability effects further each stage. This is below average for a modern ARPGs. Classes will also feature four attributes, Strenght, Intelligence, Dexterity and Stamina, that will passively increase health, or dodge, or psi power, but be of little use for anything else as there are no attribute requirements for any armor, skill or weapon (!). Combat is barely sufficient and will consist in nothing more than mowing down copy-pasted enemies with no real differences between them, forget about having Elites, Special Enemies or Mini-Bosses with meaningful powers, unique skills, and advanced tactics like in any decent ARPG, even stronger enemies will just be a copy of normal ones with just a shinier name and a bit more health, or the occasional unique trait such as damage reflect or regeneration. This boils down combat to a repetitive slog, far more than what is allowed by this genre. Only exception are Bosses, with at least an hint of special moves, but nothing impressive or epic. This game's worst flaw is not gameplay, which is bare-bones and barely sufficient, but the technical side, an absolute disaster, especially for a game recently graduating from Early Access. Ridiculous loading times of several minutes, random crashes, severe game-breaking bugs forcing reload, frame-drops to 10 or even 1 FPS for no reason at random times, inventory bugs, are only some of the many technical issues with Imperatum, and this is so severe it actually forced me to restart the whole game once because it crashed when it did not automatically save yet and made me lose 2 hours of gameplay. Yes, auto save only, on game exit only (!!!), so if it crashes while playing, your progress is lost. The game is borderline unplayable with these issues, and be prepared to data loss, progress loss, crashes and bugs of all kinds and severity if you wish to embark on this terrible journey. Check out Tamaster's Review Archive to see all my Reviews in a single, convenient location.

Gameplay Analysis
General Gameplay Gameplay will mainly be divided between exploration, questing and combat. As said before, exploration is unreliable thanks to the map being inconsistent, while the environments are bleak, feel empty, and just look like a bunch of assets thrown there without much care, they do not give out the cohesion they should. Quests will consist of single-objective targets, given by basic NPCs with one or two lines of dialogue at most, without any form of side talk or other interactions. NPCs outside of quest givers will not even speak or do anything, just stand there. Combat is not very well balanced, boring, and very repetitive, also because the class builds do not give that sense of progression and customization most ARPGs give out, but skills will often be uninspired and mediocre, not contributing at all to making the combat exciting and stimulating for the player. Story Story is just hinted at, with few dialogues, no additional lore or information, not very well written or engaging in any sense. Mediocre at best. This is however to be expected from an ARPG and is not a major issue. Combat System Combat is classic ARPG style, but just the basics of it. Skills and character progression are not very exciting, tactical options are limited, skills are boring and mediocre, enemies are not well diversified and just feel like an endless copy paste. Not good. Content & Pricing Priced at 20€, and with immense technical issues, mediocre gameplay, graphics and story, i do not recommend getting this game, even on sale. I recommend not getting this game at all. I cannot say about duration because the problems prevented me from actually playing it properly and finishing it. Balancing & Challenge On Hard, the enemies are tough at the beginning, but then it becomes much easier with a few basic item combinations. For the balance i will just say this: my marksman build was a better tank than my previous brawler build, because high rate of fire plus health regen plus AoE on base attack made me basically invincible against huge groups of mobs and even bosses. Balance is not good at all.
Technical Analysis
Graphics Blurry, dirty graphics with mediocre models, poor environments, clunky animations, and lacking effects. This game looks like from 10 years ago if not more. Sound Soundtrack and effects are aswell mediocre, especially sounds of bullets and attacks make into a terrible cacophony that is just annoying most of the time. Performance & Stability Severe FPS drops, crashes and slowdowns are very frequent. Stability is poor. This on an i7 4820K, GTX 1080 and 16GB RAM configuration. AI Enemy AI uses a basic follow and attack pattern. Boss enemies sometimes use special attacks at regular intervals. Quality of Life Inventory management and loot sorting could use vast improvement as they are not very good as they are now, and require a lot of fiddling all the time. The UI is decent enough and does the job. Bugs / Issues Game breaking bugs that prevent you from picking up loot, make enemies stop performing death animations, duplicate weapons, wrong equipment swapping, and more are commonplace in Imperatum. On the side, targeting does not adjust for height so it is impossible to target enemies higher or lower than you, and this can be surprisingly crippling in some locations.
Conclusion & Rating
A very poorly executed attempt in doing a good Sci-Fi ARPG, suffering from vast technical and gameplay issues, Imperatum is one game you certainly want to avoid, unless at least the technical issues are solved.
RATING: 3.5 / 10
You can tell this game is in early access, but I think it has some potential. The game-play itself has the basics down, though it could use some polishing in some areas (would be nice to be able to zoom in, the terrain blocks view sometimes, interface is slightly confusing). Audio feels sub-par. You can barely hear any background music for some reason. First Impression Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrgfHFlz5b0 The biggest issue so far is a blandness of quests. At least from what I've seen in about a half hour of game-play. There are quest markers and things to do, but feels like there is no overarching motivation or core quest going on. It's possible the devs wanted to get the game working well before adding some good story, but I'm just speculating here. Despite that, there are some good quality's as well. The graphics look pretty good, combat feels familiar, and there are a huge selection of weapons and abilities. The maps feel very large and are fairly detailed. While I feel $17.00 is a bit expensive for what this game is right now, I'm going to recommend it. Fans of Diablo will most likely enjoy it, and I think with a few tweaks by the devs, this will turn out to be pretty good.

This is a post-release review. I've been wanting a spacey sci-fi Diablo-esque game for some time. Sadly, Imperatum falls short of the mark. After playing the first level, I'm considering going back to Shadowgrounds (which was really good) and Space Hack, of all things. Total play time is just shy of 90 minutes so take this with however much salt you want. Imperatum does have potential but this is not a pro. This is an indication of being incomplete. PROS Sci-fi spacey-ness (instead of yet another fantasy setting). Item recycling allows for cleaning out the inventory on the fly. Guns. Lots of guns, including various energy guns, chain guns, rocket launchers, and the staple of the laser gun. Lots of equipment options. Decent graphics. Picking up loot is a matter of clicking on it. The item goes to the character instead of the character going to the item. Loot view is a toggle, so you can turn off the loot when you need to kill stuff instead of picking stuff up. I like the stim slots and health stims simply having a cooldown instead of carrying hundreds of health pots. Default key config utilizes the WASD position for the action hotkeys. There are eight hotkeys in all (1-4, Q-R), plus L/RMB. Slotting skills you don't use into passive slots within other skills is an interesting idea. I never tested it because I needed the skills I had on active use. That said, each skill appears to have four passive slots. CONS Way too much loot. I spent almost as much time picking up loot, evaluating and equipping loot, and recycling loot as I did shooting enemies. Not cool. I play these games to kill stuff and progress through the game not act like a portable warehouse. Solutions: Auto-loot. I don't want to click on dozens of items on the ground. That takes away from the game. Let the character pick up the loot by walking near it or have the companion pick it up automatically. Auto-Recycling: If the game handles item recycling automatically according to a quality level set by the player, inventory management is not taking away from the game. Shift-attack doesn't adjust for elevation differences. If I am at the top of a hill and I have line of sight to an enemy lower than me, using shift-attack should shoot the enemy. Instead, it fires straight horizontally, completely missing the enemy. However, using normal attack lets the player shoot downhill or uphill normally. This creates tactical problems. As soon as the target is dead, the character moves. This probably means the shift-attack code is flawed. It should only prevent the character from moving. It should not affect the attack aim or accuracy. Solution: Fix it. Some weapons don't fire right away when I press LMB. Notably, these are slow fire weapons like the rocket launcher and the plasma rifle. This creates two problems. First, by the time the weapon fires, the player has to move to avoid being swarmed. A rocket launcher should allow a player to wreck a swarm before it gets too close. Maybe not destroy it but wreck it. Second, if the mouse moves before the shot actually happens, the shot goes where the mouse is at the time of actual firing instead of the target that the LMB was pressed on. This typically results in a clean miss. Now, imagine the difficulty this causes in a boss fight. This automatically makes rapid fire weapons the most effective weapons in the game. Solutions: Do what everybody else does. Make the attack happen when the attack button is used, then have a cooldown for the refire rate. Intro video is a waste of time. The video does nothing to set the stage for the game. This is all handled by the click-through text within said video. For what little it accomplishes, it still requires a loading screen. No weapon switching or alternate weapon sets. The alternate weapon slot is actually the off hand. Screen rotation is only a look-rotate. Unlike Grim Dawn, it doesn't retain the new view position. So, Imperatum does have potential but I can't recommend a game based on its potential. It needs to work properly, have smooth implementation of all features, and look good for me to recommend it.
If you buy this game and start then know this: The first map you land on is the tutorial! No items that you get there will make it into the actual game, so don't bother with anything and just rush it. I didn't know that and spent most of my ~3h play time in the tutorial sorting items because some item that gave me a higher chance to receive items probably glitched and instead of getting +28% more items it felt like 2800% more items. It got so ridiculous that killing one enemy filled almost both inventories (my pet's and mine) completely. But I was happy because more items are always better and who doesn't like nice loot? And after about 2 hours or more they reveal that it was just a tutorial and I get to start with a fresh character without any of my poxing loot. To be honest I was very close to ragequitting at that moment but I endured and played on. FYI: There are four difficulty levels: Easy, normal, hard and bitcoin. The last one isn't the highest difficulty level it's just listed last because it's odd. The difficulty level of this setting is variable and depends on the value of Bitcoins, if it's rising you have a higher chance on getting good loot but also fight harder monsters, if the value is dropping so does your loot chance and the monster's HP and damage. The gameplay after the tutorial doesn't get any better, btw. The quests are still dull, the skills and the weapon lack a decent amount of OOMPH when used and I fear they will not make their set due date as it is nearly april and they said they'd be done six to eight months after their EA launch in august (27.8.17). But be fair I should also mention what I liked about the game: The different guns felt different and were to fun to test. The sniper rifle for example pierces the enemy and hits multiple targets behind the first one. The flame thrower burns a lot in close proximity and the rockets of the RPG explodes and does AOE damage. Also the various other rifles and guns are balanced on speed or damage or something in between which makes them fun to try out to see which one you like most. There also melee weapons but I didn't play them a lot. If I were to chose between buying this or to try another game, I'd probably try another game or maybe just replay Torchlight 2 with a friend again. (Reminder: TL2 costs a bit less than this and is a lot better.) This is my opinion until they deliver on their promises. I wish them good luck with fixing and oophing the game up because I want to see them succeed!
Read: there have been a few updates since I played this game, I have not had time to revisit. This review and the gameplay video are from an older version. ------------------------------------------------ Tl;dr - Not great (in its current state) Pros - has some potential Cons - animations are lacking - sound and music unimpactful - gameplay is clunky Gameplay video - https://youtu.be/suP2Jf7lxlY Will revisit after a few updates.
Feels like alpha stage at this point. Clunky gameplay, sounds are horrible.
Imperatum may look great based on the screenshots, but the game has a lot of technical errors which cause it to be a not-so-pleasant experience. For example, there appears to be a music volume setting, but that setting does not affect the volume of anything. Sound effects are loud, and the music is obnoxious. I wish I could just disable all audio in the game, but I can't. The combat is also fairly dull. You can't shoot and run a the same time, so you just have to take hits from the enemies in classic MMORPG style or run to a great distance with the teleport mechanic and shoot from the safe distance over and over. There are no redeemable qualities in this game at this moment (aside from good use of see-through shader effects), so I'm surprised the developer is charging $20 for it. I hope the developer continues to improve upon the game, but in Imperatum's current state, I cannot recommend it at any price. Some improvements I think should be focused on: 1. Fix the audio problems. The inability to disable the music really tested my patience and resulted in me quitting out of the game within a few minutes rather than giving it the time to really explore its combat more. 2. Controller support! I would like to be able to run-and-gun with joysticks rather than a mouse. 3. WASD movement! While I appreciate the classic mouse-controlled movement scheme, I don't really see why you would want to limit your use of the mouse to just movement. Let players use the mouse for aiming the gun! 4. A better UI and dialogue interaction design. I would appreciate a more intuitive dialogue system with branching dialogue choices. Currently, it appears to have very basic functionality.
