About
Set off on an amazing journey through Unknown Fate, a strongly story-driven first-person adventure with many puzzles to solve and enemies to beat. Become Richard, who suddenly passes seamlessly from the real world into a surreal universe. You’ll encounter strange characters, unfamiliar artifacts and scenes resembling Richard’s former life, of which he has lost all memory. Yet, he knows that this is not where he is supposed to be. The world he has come to inhabit is strange and distant. He feels the urge to find out more about this surreal universe and the creatures inhabiting it, in order to find a way out – out and back to his real self, his real life that he knows he has yet to fully recall.
Engulfed in mystery, you take cautious steps deep into the unknown, only to have your mind swept away by yet more questions, nibbling at your grasp of what you think is real and true – your certainties will start to crumble.
With no way back and a strong urge for answers beating in your temples, you push on, striving to get a grip on the odd difficulties surrounding you, eagerly awaiting the moment your mind will become untangled when the thread of your journey finally unravels all the way. But there is some way yet to go…
In A Nutshell
🔵 Pros + Atmospheric setting that blends well abstraction and reality. + Possibility of playing with or without VR. + Mysterious narrative with several hidden meanings and allegories. + Good voice acting and soundtrack. 🔴 Cons - Below average graphics lacking in detail, polishing and complexity. - Inconsistent quality of level design, ranging from good to poor. - Puzzles and combat are way too simple, posing basically zero engagement. - Presence of level-breaking and collision bugs on occasion. Unknown Fate is a very surreal story-driven game, that I somewhat enjoyed playing, as some of its elements such as storytelling and setting, are pretty good. Still, some other issues and design choices prevented this game from being really good: for starters, atmospheric games like this, often based on a short but engaging experience, make of graphics one of their strong suits to impress and convey the narration at best, but this is not the case, as graphics are generally underwhelming, with significant lack of detail not suitable for current standards, even in Indies. Secondly, as much as combat should not be hard in games like this, the one proposed in Unknown Fate is way too simplistic and becomes stale very fast, also because there is only one type of enemy for the entire experience, except a "boss" encounter which honestly was just pitiful. Puzzles should instead be at least engaging if not challenging, but also in this, expectations were not met, with very few sections giving out a remotely passable challenge. The presence of level-breaking problems such as not being able to reach a level critical item anymore if restarting from checkpoint, are also an issue, but luckily quite rare. Overall, let me say this is not a bad game, but it's not a really good one either. It sits on that very fine line in-between, making it a suitable purchase right now only for fans of the genre, which i'm sure will enjoy this as I did, but for the average player just casually interested in this, i'd say to wait for a sale and a few patches to get better experience and value. As the adventure progresses, you will acquire more powers for the Artifact, eventually allowing it to shoot orbs of light to activate devices, stun enemies with flashes, move and rotate specific objects, and even locally slow down time to pass dangerous areas. Mostly, you will be spending your time performing classic, not particularly intriguing platform sections, aided by your supernatural trinket, stun and kill the occasional group of enemies that honestly are more decoration that a threat, and explore the levels in search of additional Memories, red crystals unlocking additional lore about your past. There is nothing else apart these to find around levels, exploring every corner accurately will result in just a waste of time, sadly. Even for a story-driven experience, the proposed gameplay is fairly dull, not enough to be outright bad of course, but could use a good spicing up to step up the game. 📖 Story The strong suit of the title, Unknown Fate's story is well-narrated, riddled with allegories and hidden meanings, and most of all, full of mystery and events which interpretation is left in the hands of each player. It may not be the most clear of stories, or the most complex, but has definitely its charm and be pleasant to follow. 👊 Combat System Combat is not expected to be a major point in a game like this, granted, but even with this premise, it is laughably accessory and trivial. Only one enemy type is present, whose pattern consists in slowly walking towards you to strike. Your artifact can stun and attack enemies with its basic power, killing them in three hits, very few considering the fire rate. A "boss fight" is present, but is aswell trivial and more a puzzle than anything else, getting killed in it will really take effort. The fact that the "main enemy" of this title is not a proper boss at any point, is quite a letdown. 💰 Content & Pricing Priced at 15€ as base price tag, and offering 3-4 hours of average-ish quality content without replay-ability, i'd say this is a good purchase, i repeat, only for fans of the genre right now, while for everyone else, wait for some improvements and maybe a sale. 🔗 Balance & Challenge Challenge level, as expected, is set on low standards.
Technical Analysis
🎥 Graphics Sufficient, but nowhere near as good as it would be expected from this kind of game in 2018. Many textures are of mediocre or very low quality especially up-close, props in many occasions are evidently resized, bloating polygons and textures in unpleasant ways. Lighting effects and shaders are quite basic. Particle effects are mediocre and few. Overall it passes the mark but barely. 🔊 Sound Good voice acting and soundtracks will ensure better immersion in the experience. 🔩 Performance & Stability Nothing to report, performance is acceptable. 💻 Artificial Intelligence Enemies just use a follow and attack pattern, there is not real AI to speak of. 🏠 Quality of Life A sound options menu is missing. Graphical options could use a bit more settings such as disabling of DOF, Bloom and Motion Blur. For the rest, nothing else. 🐛 Bugs & Issues A critical issue currently can lead to progress reset if the ENTER key is pressed more than once when selecting Quit to close the game, as the game will wrongly read inputs and start a new game! Apart from this, levels can be bypassed or broken in several occasions, but most of the time you really need to want to do that in the first place.
Conclusion
Unknown Fate is a sufficient story-driven platformer with some good elements to it, while some other mediocre and poor ones. It's a mixed bag really, being on that tiny bit in-between good and bad games.
RATING: 6.0 / 10
If you liked the review and interested in completion and perfection time of games with additional useful information (for example: how difficult to get all achievements, is MP or DLC required and so on) or interested in reviews like this, then please follow my Average Achievement Hunter curator.
This game is available for keyboard+mouse normal play, it is not a VR only game.
I wish there would be an informative or neutral review option. The game is not total garbage, but it is not something I would recommend. It is neither something I would „not recommend”. It has few ok platforming puzzle areas. Other parts are forgettable. Overall, I’ll still give a thumbs down for it, because the quality of the content is way too low for the asking price.
The Story
Let’s start with the worst part of the game. It is the story. Perhaps, it is just me, but it felt like the developers did not have a direct concept about the story. Perhaps, they had multiple writers, and in the end, they created a mixed story based on the ideas. It will be never clear in what kind of world we playing. How we got there? What is it going about? Nothing. It is not a problem if some secrets or story left for the fantasy of the players, but not offering something different than just filler dialogues and an unclear story is a bad minus.
Gameplay content
Combat, enemies, boss The game offers two different types of action in the game. One is puzzles and platforming. The second is some kind of combat. Now, this last part is a total joke. Right now I think, if the game doesn’t have any enemies, then it would have been a better experience as they were disappointing. They simply move towards you slowly. All enemies are easy prey for you. The boss „battle” is probably the easiest fight in the universe. If you ever manage to die to that battle, then you are probably the worst gamer on the Globe. Nvm, make that to the whole universe. You need to trap the legs of the boss. You can die only if you go to those spots, where the boss stamping with his legs. He attacking the very same spots, every single time. Sounds challenging right? No, it isn’t. BORING. Puzzles and platforming The game starts with very basic puzzles. Just hit a platform with your weapon, then it moves to its position, and you can pass the jumping „challenge”. It offers some more interesting concepts and puzzle-jump scenes later, but it takes some time to be interesting. That will happen only near the end of the game. And then? Then the game ends.
Quality of the content
Visual Sometimes the game has professional models, nice-looking characters/ creatures and detailed objects/textures. Sometimes it is just terrible. What is a bad graphic? It is hard to describe. Even pixel games could be fun, look cool, but then the game should be consistent. If a game wants to have a better visual, then it should cover the full game. Another problem is, that there are hidden walls in the game. The rooms and areas already cover a small area. Still, I cant explore the whole area as a hidden wall stops me. Then why not placed the actual wall there, instead of placing it about few meters away? Voice Acting and Music I think music and sound effects are fine. It works very well for a surreal world. The voice acting, however, sounds unprofessional. Powerless. No „strength” in the voice of the characters. Just like the game, the voice acting stays on the ground of averageness too.
Conclusion
Unknown Fate has its moments. Overall it feels so, that the game missing some creativity. If it is a puzzle game, then it should have more puzzles. More object moving. More object manipulation. Sometimes it feels like just a walking simulator: You walk, you jump a few times, but nothing happens. This is what affected the result of my review the most. The content the game offers, on its quality, is far too low for the asking price of 14.99EUR. Even the lowest recorded steam sale price, which is 2.99, is on the edge of the „ok price”. Not questionable, that the developers spent some time on this game, but I have a question. Just because I spend a lot of time on something, does that make it cool? Nope, especially if I could buy something better and more polished at a cheaper, or similar price. It is worth a playthrough if you don’t have anything else to play and you got it from a bundle. Direct purchase on these prices is not recommended.
Hey, I am an achievement hunter!
Perfection time: around 4-5hours. 1 playthrough enough if you use a guide or some hints about the missable collectible mementos. Not a hard game to 100%. Planing to play it? Use my steam guide for achievements or hints about walkthrough if you get stuck: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2052875767
This review was created for Average Achievement Hunter curator
Follow my curator if you like to see achievement-related information (completion time, difficulty to get all achievements) on the store page of the games. https://store.steampowered.com/curator/30168383-Average-Achievement-Hunter/ The curator group doesn't mark any game as recommended so it shows useful information about achievements on the store page of the games without influencing the main store page of steam with recommendations + all games sorted to lists based on expected completion times. These devs dont know what checkpoints are, so have fun starting the whole level again if something goes wrong.
needs a lot more work, combat is like someone brought me to the 90s and if you ignore this and all the voice acting it can actually be interesting, plot is.. wierd to say the least. No audio sliders, no mouse cursor to select settings. Feels a bit rushed and some scenes are out of place, but some story concepts meshed well together!
The twisted dreamlike world the game is set in is really good but unfortunately the mechanics of this game are poor so i'm not willing to support the game. 1.No options for anything. 2.No free locomotion or snap/smooth turning. 3.Poor support for the Oculus Rift touch. So a refund for me which is a shame as i would of liked to explore more.
More like known fate
First of all this game is available for both VR and non VR and I only played the non VR version. Between the music, sounds and linear paths with some secondary roads to get distracted it's easy to know what the structure of the game is, go here and there without knowing why, we will try to confuse you and tell you the truth at the very end. Not saying that this is bad, but is predictable.
Gameplay
Scenario The developers don't know who to change one scenario to other so we are teleported from one place to another with a flash light covering it all after a change of events is made. Even the character is asking himself how the hell is everything happening, mostly the feeling of the player at that very moment. We will swap between vision of our real life remembering past memories and the new realm we will mostly play in, trying to guess what is happening in this world. Sound The game use frightening sounds whenever it pleases either for intimidate or create stress to the player, anyway the music used won't reach a scary level and it's overused (music and sounds in the background all the time) so after the first 10 minutes you won't care about the music at all. Also for VR users this can make a very exhaustive experience since having weird music running through the ears 24/7 can ruin the gameplay.
More deeply
Enemies Enemies or hostile creatures exist in this game, this evil but weak creature will try to hunt you as soon as they see you, but you will be able to defend yourself with some ancient weapon that you will be given during the gameplay. Hostile characters in this game are really simply and generally based on the same mechanics and combat style, stun them using light and defeat them with three shots, anyway, if you let any of them get too close to you, they will consume you and you will be sent to the last respawn point. Graphics Could run the game at max settings with 60 fps with no freezing, so performance is not a problem, the game uses a dark theme most of the time using the topic of light and dark sides fighting for that little space in the screen. Apart from that all the environment is very well detailed with abstract elements that may get meaning throughout the game. Characters and environment The game sets you in a closed environment where your movement is limited to solve certain puzzles and go straight forward, with secondary paths as exceptions using collectibles shaped as memories of our character. But even being a closed environment can make you get lost if you don't pay attention to the dialogue or, take a rest meanwhile as well as you can miss some important pieces to unlock your way. We are an human being who was been teleported to another dimension to complete a task, first without even knowing our name, kinda like that anime series called RE:ZERO.
Rating
Pros • Difficulty friendly: Most of the puzzles of this game will be easy to complete and sometimes we will be given hints about how to deal with them. Cons •With our second perk we will be able to manipulate elements and move then whenever we want, if we move one too much we can mix it with another element and make it get stuck, ending in a level restart and in a frustrate shriek with all the people around us wondering what went wrong.
Final thoughts.
A good game to play on free time or between pauses since it's divided into several chapters of no longer than 30 minutes each. Being one of that games that need to be played till the end to get the full meaning of the story. I had the opportunity to play the game with a friend with VR and I really recommend it if you are a VR user (but lower the music), play something you like and everything will be fine because as I said it can be a little very annoying. And also a good point of this game is that I consider it family friendly, so even with the dark themes and the painful music people from all ages can play the game.
But is their ambition worthwhile for the average player, or is Unknown Fate more of a special genre? The story of Unknown Fate is set in a curious place, a surreal world full of strange objects. Of course you have no idea who you are or why you are here at all. The story is quite confusing, the hero basically explores the mysterious world, which is a crude manifestation of his memories, and thus learns more and more about the background. There are flashbacks into the past in black and white and in a hard comic style and also one or the other monster to fight. Can you believe the creatures you meet that look like strange bird-like creatures and call themselves Guardians? Unknown Fate is certainly a story that asks more questions than it answers.... The hero can move by teleportation. Free movement would be possible, according to the developers, but since the player has many obstacles to overcome, teleportation is very useful. So you can hop merrily through the curious worlds and get annoyed about the many clipping errors if you accidentally get too close to a wall and stand in the black nothing. Especially annoying are doors that do not open. There you can only pass through by clipping. Since there is also no snap turn, the player has to turn himself to change the direction. In the VR version, unfortunately, no hand models are shown either. Unlike in some flat versions, the tool simply floats - the artifact simply "in" the invisible hand of the hero. Up to now there is no support for the index controllers. The puzzles you find in the course of the story are all easy to solve and so the story never really comes to a halt. The unfortunately very limited fight against monsters, in Unknown Fate, consists unfortunately only of stunning the same creatures and then shooting a glowing bullet on their tail. If this doesn't work and the creatures come too close to the hero, the hero is put back a few meters and can start the cramping again. There are also no save points, but the game is divided into short levels (temples), which cannot be started individually. Unfortunately, only the start and continue button works in the menu, after all. All in all the graphics and design of Unkonwn Fate is really good, but mixing real objects and fantasy elements looks very organic and somehow never out of place. The monster design and that of the NPC, could be a bit more lively, especially the monsters. The black and white cut scenes into the past are again very nice. Also the sound has two sides again, the good thing is the sound effects and the great piano soundtrack and the English dubbing voices. The bad thing is that there are always audio errors and the great sounds are not played at all. I already liked Unknown Fate VR. I liked the design of the world and also the story was interesting enough to play through the game in just under four hours. On the other hand, although it was released on really every platform, it is still very buggy. I somewhat enjoyed this game, the graphics and sound was amazing but the game play was lack luster. The combat first of was un-enjoyable its right click then three left clicks and there is only 1 enemy that's more just there to fill in the space between the story cut scenes or the puzzles. The puzzles aren't overly hard the only thing I found difficult was clipping through the platforms you jump onto and the physics sometimes throwing you around. The story is enjoyable but also confusing. The game on sale is a fun few hours of gameplay but I would not recommend you pay full price for this game. You can always check out my play through here if you aren't interest in paying the full price! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBeapyQ_Z-o&list=PL6ICmPsarl3UK0lkbr3jxBfumDxIpFAb_
6/10 Unfortunately, I just can't quite recommend Unknown Fate. There are absolutely some great aspects of the title, but in the end I regretted the time I spent with the game. It could most easily be described as a first-person puzzle platformer. It also can be played in VR, but I played it with a standard setup. You'll play as Richard, a man who finds himself in a strange, visually-bizarre world that seems to be constructed from his memories. You'll progress through the world by completing jumps across platforms, and through the completion of puzzles. You're aided in your task through the acquisition of "the artifact," a hand-held device that eventually gains three separate functions. The first function includes a stunning blast and projectile shot, the second allows Richard to relocate and spin platforms, and the third allows him to slow down time in a small, specific zone. The only particularly confusing puzzle I recall was when I was asked to modify the text of four computer screens to create a certain phrase. I had no clue what phrase I was attempting to create, and the game lost some momentum for me here. The game also includes some very simple combat, but this is basically inconsequential. As I traversed the strange in-game world, I was struck not only by the generally high level of production, but also by the inspired world design. Enemies (and allies) have colorful, flowing, and creative designs. It is obvious that the world is constructed from Richard's memories, as the landscape is littered with cassette and VHS tapes, push pins, pencils, keys from a computer keyboard, books, file cabinets, cigarettes, and even a locale that presents itself as a carnival. Although I was also a bit disappointed with the voice acting, my biggest gripe was with the story. As other reviewers have mentioned, the story is extremely vague and open to interpretation. It seems possible that perhaps RIchard committed some heinous act as a child which led to his unconscious creation of the game's world, but it's equally plausible that he is actually a mystical gatekeeper for this remote world instead. From time to time as you traverse through the world, you'll find memory fragments that allow you to view a stylized scene from Richard's life. I took my time with the game, often pausing to reflect, and I was able to locate all but one of the aforementioned memory fragments. However, the story still didn't add up to anything significant for me. It doesn't help matters that the final moments of the game were cutscenes in which control was taken out of my hands. Unknown Fate features clever visual design, is bug-free (as far as I can tell), and I love the idea of a secret world populated with the memories of my protagonist. Unfortunately, I just wasn't able to create any sort of coherent takeaway from my time in that world, which just made the whole endeavor feel aimless.
The option for turning off motion blur is broken. I turned it off in the tutorial, but it returned in the next area. Since then I haven't been able to turn it off again, no matter what I try. It really ruins the game for me, and since I'm not playing it in VR it never did any good for immersion anyway. I was really looking forward to playing it, since it has such interesting character designs and an interesting concept. But I just can't play it, the motion blur makes me motion sick.
