Hatman kicks off with a mysterious opening—your character crawls out of a coffin. Are you undead? Punished? The game doesn’t say, but triangle-shaped beings believe you’re the only one who can retrieve a crucial item from a castle. From the first few moments, oozes classic platformer vibes. The CRT-style visuals—complete with scanlines and curved screen edges—instantly recall gaming’s early days, while chiptune-infused music and stripped-down mechanics reinforce the retro aesthetic. The controls are simple: move left or right, jump, and attack. However, due to Hatman’s sluggish movement, jumping isn’t ideal for crossing gaps. On the other hand, there’s a fair wall-jumping system, which offers unlimited vertical scaling by mashing jump against certain walls. The jump button, together with the attack button, also activates your first form of attack—a flying kick. It’s more of a backup move, since you quickly find a crowbar just steps into the game. The crowbar is your main weapon and keeps things simple: one attack type, no combos. Holding down the attack button unleashes continuous strikes, so there’s no need for button mashing. There are no weapon upgrades, but maintaining a damage multiplier adds an extra layer of skill-based progression—lose it when hit, but regain it easily with a few solid attacks. Although enemies respawn often, they come in only a few types that don't pose a problem. Though underwhelming in combat, the flying kick shines after you beat the first boss. You unlock a rechargeable power that lets you fly kick across long distances, and this becomes a crucial traversal tool. Given Hatman’s slow pace, this move makes jumping across gaps or reaching far-off enemies much easier. Health is cleverly visualized—each hit knocks a hat off your character, which enemies can catch. Defeat the hat-wearing foe, and you can retrieve your lost health. Coins scattered around the stage slowly add to your health pool, granting extra hats. Dying isn’t frustrating here. You respawn immediately—either on the spot or at the last checkpoint—without losing much except time. It’s especially useful during boss fights, which focus on dodging and waiting for weak points. Bosses grow a bit faster and slightly switch tactics as they take damage, but they’re manageable. The only hiccup is that the flying kick's cooldown prevents fluid dodging and attacking. The game progresses linearly but teases metroidvania elements. Hidden coins and health boosts are tucked away, while major secrets—like three artifacts required for the best endings—lurk in hidden parts. Except for the short tutorial stage, the entire game takes place inside the castle. One playthrough takes around 2–3 hours, but you can keep exploring for artifacts even when you reach a bad ending.
Hatone – A Surprisingly Awesome Platformer with Soul Imagine if VVVVVV and Portal had a minimalist lovechild – that would be Hatone. At first glance, it looks like a simple black-and-white arcade game, but after just a couple of levels, you realize there’s real magic here. The game cleverly plays with perception, forcing you to constantly switch between dimensions. What’s impossible in one world becomes solvable in another. The mechanic is brilliant in its simplicity, yet it leaves tons of room for clever puzzles. Sure, the controls feel a bit unusual at first, but once you get the hang of it, the pure fun begins. Every completed level gives you that sweet "I’m a genius!" feeling. And the electronic soundtrack perfectly keeps you in the zone. Of course, I wish there were more content – just as you’re getting hooked, the levels end too soon. And the physics could be a bit tighter in places. But even as it is, Hatone is a fresh, original experience that sticks with you. If you love unique indie games where mechanics matter more than graphics, and difficulty feels like a challenge rather than frustration, then Hatone absolutely deserves a spot in your library. A small but proud gem that proves a great game doesn’t need a million-dollar budget – just one killer idea. 9/10 – would’ve been a 10 with twice as many levels!!!
If you’re looking for a game that doesn’t require a huge time commitment but still delivers a satisfying experience, HATONE is the answer. The game is packed with easter eggs 🥚 and nostalgic references that’ll make any retro gaming fan smile. It’s clear that the developer poured their heart into this project, crafting every detail with care and precision.
Well, completed this game with all flawless victories on bosses and i can say that combat system in this game is good. It's complecated enought to have you unique EXP with bosses or just some random mobs. Visuals are great, retro style plays a good role in all of this because its very inspired by all the retro games. Music is great too! References are great put and well done. So if you want to give you 3hours of your time and have some fun you need to try it out
HATONE offers a perfect mix of challenge and satisfaction. The boss fights are tough, but beating them feels incredibly rewarding. It’s short, sweet, and packed with action—exactly what I wanted!
I didn’t expect much from this little indie game, but damn, it was totally worth the time. It starts off pretty chill and seems like your average experience at first. But the game quickly picks up speed, throwing more challenges at you… I was hooked and just wanted more!
A true gem of a retro action-platformer! Perfect for players who crave fast-paced, unpredictable challenges. Though short, the game delivers non-stop action and leaves you wanting more. And the music? Absolutely killer — it’s worth the price of admission alone. It blends modern design with retro charm in a way that feels fresh yet authentic. A must-play for fans of retro classics and the action-platformer genre!
Nice retro platformer with metroidvania elements, beat 100% in about 7 hours. Be waiting for the new levels or sequel.
