3/5
In comparision to Final Fantasy I this game is absolutely awful: -The map is awfully empty and unlike in the first game you can just go everywhere and have to just be lucky that you dont run into a zone with high level monsters -The leveling system is just nonsense And one thing in general: Its an absolute joke that they recycled all the sprites from the FF1 Pixel Remaster
The game kinda sucks overall, but the thing that really set me over the edge is after i beat the game, not only did i not get the achievment for beating the game (i'm probably going to beat the final boss again just for it) but also I like to watch the developer credits, only for them to stop working 20 seconds in. I'm never going to play this game ever again.
worth a playthrough this version offers fixes for some of the odd choices devs made on the original but beware not all of the issues
Still simplistic by todays standards, but a radical jump in story-telling compared to the original. Also a radical shift in leveling mechanics which at least held my interest more than III.
Before playing Final Fantasy II, it was the only entry in the franchise (except Final Fantasy XI) I knew almost nothing about, aside from what I’d seen in the Dissidia games. The story was honestly quite good: the looming threat of the Palamecian Empire, led by the cunning Emperor, creates a dark, oppressive atmosphere that drives the entire narrative. Unlike Final Fantasy I's more straightforward story, this one is filled with political intrigue, emotional depth, and its fair share of deaths and tragedies, making every victory feel hard-earned. However, the leveling system was a bit frustrating. While the concept isn’t bad, the execution falls short. Not having a static fourth team member until the end of the story was destabilizing at first, but you get used to it. Some enemies inflict status effects on 100% of their hits (even 0 dmg attacks), and mobs like Coeurls can kill you on hit, even with death-protecting equipment. The final dungeon, Pandaemonium, was harsh but still fun. Its design was breathtaking, and the music was absolutely gorgeous. Overall, a flawed but rewarding adventure.
