I don't have the luxury of nostalgia for classic Final Fantasy, and have not played JRPGs until very recently, and this game still slaps incredibly hard. The music, story, gameplay, characters, all of it bangs. The newly arranged soundtrack by itself is incredible. Go in blind and don't use a guide. This game really is worth playing fresh.
I want to be clear, most of this game is great, and once I get it working, it runs fine. However the fact that it wont respond to either keyboard or controller button presses is completely unacceptable. It's 2026, Square is a big company...you would think they could figure out something as simple as controller compatibility. The fact that I have to reload the game and tab out multiple times just to get ANY input at all to work is just bonkers. Especially with the price you are charging. And this isn't the only Square game that does stuff like this. BE BETTER!! You guys have become such a disappointment as a game company :(
I'm gonna start with the obvious, this game is a masterpiece. The characters, story and music are exceptional and easily some of the best I've seen from this series. Terra, Celes and Locke stand out especially as amazing characters and easily three of my favourite Final Fantasy characters now. Kefka is one of the best villains I've ever seen, I can't go into detail because of spoilers but he is incredible. Espers were a great addition to the combat system (which is already really fun) allowing massive freedom for each party member. And that opera house scene... One of a kind.
Gonna be a hot take/unpopular opinion because this game is LOVED by many but overall i DID NOT like final fantasy 6. The GOOD: ---The graphics and overall pixel art feels like an UPGRADE over previous final fantasy games. ---Music. Pixel remaster music was so well done for ALL of the pixel remasters. sounds so good! --- Story I thought the story was interesting but i didnt really enjoy how we progress through it and the things you had to do. The half way/ END GAME point was a VERY interesting turn of events which you dont see often in RPGs THE BAD: ----Party splitting is something i HATE doing in RPGs and most final fantasy games dont make you do this but FF6 is the WORST with it constantly making you split parties up to 2 or even 3 groups when i only want to use 1 party to progress the game. This is simply NOT enjoyable for me and i dont like being forced to do this. I dont mind this on the rare ocasion but it happened way too often in FF6 ---- on top of FORCED party splitting p[arty members would leave way too often and i never felt like i had a solid party that im leveling and working with. Just felt all over the place and very unstable. This game would have been better with less character and less party splitting and leaving. ---- SHADOW.... I DIDNT KNOW MAN.... HOW WAS I SUPPOSE TO KNOW! Do your research if you are confused.. I dont wana add spoilers.... ---- The battle system and esper system was not really enjoyable for me to engage with. For example i got a large amount of dopamine from the job system in FFV. The system in FF6 feels boring and plus with so many characters and party splitting and leaving its hard to keep track of progression. --- Wonky story moments and confusing objectives. There were many times where i just didnt know what to do or where to go. END GAME is VERY bad on this. Had to constantly look up guides on where to go and what to do. Also the opera house moment during the first half of the game felt like a complete waste of time. just many moments like that i didnt enjoy. --- Pretty mixed on the characters. I liked terra and her backstory. Sabin is my favorite character and edgar and locke is pretty cool as well. Kefka was a pretty great villain for the most party. Outside of them the characters were pretty boring and some straight up dont make sense and feel so random like Setzer. I honestly felt like less characters with little to no party splitting or leaving would have been so much better. Overall i didnt really enjoy FF6 and i went in with VERY high expectations because people claim this game is one of the best final fantasy games. I had one friend warn me he thought the game was VERY overrated and honestly i 100 percent agree with him. This is not the masterpiece people are saying it is.. I have no desire to touch this game ever again. And now i have finished ALL the the pixel remasters. My favorite was Final fantasy V.
TL:DR : The story is mid, the combat is mid and usually people like it for nostalgia reasons. Honestly the biggest mistake was probably believing the general opinion that this is the best final fantasy. The first half is decent, but then it changes pacing (after one important event) which I wasnt ready for and did not appreciate (it made sense in the story tho) and the final boss fight isnt fun at all (maybe I am just bad, but since I was able to clear everything else In the main story, I dont think so). Nevertheless, the main villain sucks regardless (Gestahl would have probably been better because of spoiler reasons) and there is way to many characters (14) which makes the final dungeon super not fun when you played with your favorites for most of the game. I really REALLY dont like the ATB system, because very often, the enemy has his turn before yours when you have already chosen your move and would have done something else knowing what they would do (in other words RNG can screw you over and I like strategy like in FFX or the ability to leave the danger zone to do something in FF7R). I will probably come back at some point to beat the final boss to have closure, but maybe enough time will pass that it will no longer matter to me.
Revived my interests in SNES games overall.
Welp, I finally finished the FF Pixel Remasters! Although I didn't quite get the 100% since I burned out trying after my second time miss a few chests an monster entries, maybe I'll get it in another playthrough! I still absolutely LOVED this game with every ounce of my being, and it definitely made me teary eyed at the end! I recommend this game so deeply! Especially if you haven't played a FF game before!
FF6 is careful. The story pulls the rug out from under you in staisfying ways, and the gameplay is some of the best. I only wish kefka's tower didnt do that to me but whatever
