Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition

Maybe wait for a sale if you're not sure (it gets very cheap occasionally), but this is a classic for a reason. The combat is a little strange by modern standards, but good - it's somewhere in-between a typical modern RPG and a MOBA. It'll run on a potato - given the age of the game, it's not a shock that it'll do OK on modern integrated graphics (!), but it still looks surprisingly decent. The worldbuilding and immersion is just [chef's kiss] - twenty seconds and two dialog choices in and I had a feel for the character I was playing; and most of the ongoing political, moral, and personal quandaries add layers to the world and main character. The writing isn't flawless, but it works with complicated social and political issues without pretending they don't exist or being preaching and condescending. It's crashing semi-regularly (memory leak?), but that's not a huge deal if you save frequently, and scaling on large monitors isn't great. Possibly mods help with one or both of those? TLDR; despite the limitations and age, I'd put it on the shortlist of 'games you really ought to play at some point'. If you like RPGs, do yourself a favor and pick it up next time it's on sale. Or if you're bored, not to price sensitive, and like the old Bioware stuff (in some ways it very much reminds me of ME1), go ahead and pay list, you'll still get your money's worth.

This game has aged horribly. Awful dumbed down game coming off Baldur's Gate 2. Less tactics, shallow combat that is basically nuke everything with your mage. Everyone moves like they're on ice skates and melee classes are extremely dull. Insufferable characters who whine and moan and a major player choice in this game involving the death of a companion gets completely retconned in the later games. Ur ChOicEz MaDDuR....not after BG2 apparently. For all the turds thrown at Veilguard, DAO is FILLED with just as many problems but nostalgia glasses make people dumb. "Dark fantasy" because it was dark for YOU since you were 11 when you played it. It is not dark at all. It feels like nü-metal Lord of the Rings at best. This game is one of the main reasons gamers are weird dorks about demanding romance in all RPGs these days because people are too scared to talk to someone in the real world. Four thumbs down.

The game is constantly crashing, there is nothing else to say, except don't buy..

This game refuses to be played on my machine, I've tried everything. Spent more time troubleshooting than actually playing the game and it still won't behave. I've tried reinstalling it, I've tried reinstalling ancient reditributables, I've tried editing XML files, I've tried modding in unofficial patches, nothing will tame this program. Crashes constantly and when it doesn't textures fail to load in, visual effects becoming permanent, the lighting doesn't know what it's supposed to be doing as it rapidly flickers back and forth, menus becoming stuck and so many others.

Game is currently unplayable on modern machines.
