Souls-like game for beginners , you can shoot from a distance when not engaging close range combat , you get armour sets and weapons that enhance your stats. Some weapons include a greatsword, axe and shield combo, sword & shield combo, guns , dual blades , pistol , assault rifle and shotgun. There is 4 main elements in the game. Theres check points that can reset the spawns of enemies so you can level up and save. In order to wear armour , you must first upgrade your stat to a required amount in RED, showing on the top right corner of your stats. There are areas and they have a certain theme about them, i wish there was a map because you can get lost. The bosses are good i believe theres 10 of them, they are hard. I got the game on discount. If you like a challenge and interested in starting soul-like game but more forgiving try this out. And is cheap. Its an unappreciated gem souls-like.
Dolmen is an okay souls-like that does nothing particularly wrong but nothing particularly memorable either. If you enjoy the genre and catch it on sale it is worth a few hours of your time, but do not pay full price for something that exists comfortably in the shadow of better games.
Started as a trivial but playable souls-like, then started terribly descending to a mix of long empty corridors, frustrating enemies that, only sometimes, randomly one-shot you, and bullet-sponge bosses vomiting combos on you. And the only way to beat those bosses (i.e. the last ones) is to spam dash and hit, then dash only to recharge your stamina... for something like 10 minutes (watch gameplays on youtube, they're literally 10 minutes of repeating this, and pray not to die). Then, switching between controls is clunky, so for example you're stuck a few seconds after the already too long time to heal, meaning that sometimes, to heal yourself in the middle of bosses' combos, you have to wait minutes for the right moment. The story... they didn't even try to make it more interesting of the most trivial science fiction one. But, most of all, it's narrated through many boring and pointless things to read, and few cutscenes. Of a souls-like it has really little: as I said, the map is either made of long empty corridors or long corridors where you have to rush through enemies - no interesting inter-connecting structure. Moreover, checkpoints are also always in the worst place, all far from the already tedious bosses. To end up, a (partly) positive point. I always appreciate the use of DualSense, and here you have: adaptive triggers, which increase their resistance for melee when you're running out of stamina, and for guns when out of ammo; LED, of the color of your weapon's element (oh, yes, there are 3 elements, but they're useless, never noticed a difference in efficacy against different enemies); haptic feedback (I actually almost never noticed any vibration in the game, though). But, I have to say, in a game where shooting is important (although forgiving, i.e. very easy and at close distance), the dead zone is too high, making even this annoying. Ah, and I almost forgot that, despite the support for all these DualSense functionalities, the type of gamepad isn't recognized automatically, but you have to set the "PlayStation" type from the settings.
Is this a good video game? In my opinion, not really. Just like Dark Souls II is not a good game in my opinion. But just like Dark Souls II, Dolmen grew on me anyway and I love it. It has a strange, dream-like atmosphere that I couldn't really describe to you if I tried, but I feel it. "Vibes" I guess. Best example is the music on the Ship; it is weird, doesn't really fit but is somehow also perfect. If the game is on sale for cheap, boot it up and bask in the weird jankiness and otherworldly ethereal vibe the game exudes. I definitely got my $2 worth and hell I might even keep playing. EDIT: Having just completed the game uh... how do I put this without spoiling. Lets just say they very optimistically bait a sequel. It's both adorable and hilarious. Did my opinion change? No. but I honestly enjoyed my time with this enigma.
Dolmen: A Souls-like that forgot the “good” part I really tried to like this. I love Souls-likes and I’m always happy to support smaller studios. But Dolmen feels like it copied the surface of the genre without understanding why it works. Combat is clunky and unresponsive, enemies repeat constantly, and the levels are mostly gray corridors that blur together. Bosses feel more like damage sponges than real encounters. There are some neat ideas (mixing melee with ranged energy weapons), but they’re never developed enough to matter. The whole time I played, I kept thinking about better Souls-likes I could be playing instead. Not terrible… just very forgettable.
