I played the first Morbid: Acolytes of Sin and was genuinely excited to play the sequel in the form of a Souls-like game. I am thoroughly disappointed with the final product as the animations are choppy, the camera angles are buggy and overall, this game feels like it was created by a College Student. Refunding so I can buy more Hentai games to cleanse the memory of this game.
This game is bad feels like not playtested. Horrible mob placement. Ganks everywhere even worse than DS2 and the game locks you in them for no reason just because. After I got to the 3rd region I just run to the next bonfires as enemies are flooding all areas. Upgrading though unique feels like nothing I am not even sure if it works. So many weapons but upgrade materials are limited I didn't even see my weapon in max level. Weapons themselves just looking at their stat numbers are horribly balance. The main bosses though I say are decent specially the last 2 Main Bosses but most of them are just bad specially the side bosses. After beating the final boss there is not even a cutscene just straight to credits. All that pain for nothing.
I am giving a positive review with some caveats - in particular a pretty big one. The game is technically well done: level design and environments are nice, performances are more than decent, the combat is very good. Character design and animations are more than decent. The story and the camera are passable - let's just say that they don't get in your way... most of the time. The last two bosses are great, even if the last one is a bit too aggressive, but the penultimate is as good as some of the bosses in the From games. I didn't like much the leveling system and the rune power ups - it feels like it just wanted to be different from the other games of the genre, and it sucked out most of the reward of beating enemies and becoming stronger, as the pace of progression is glacial, some of the bonuses are not very good and at times too cryptic (i.e. cleansing rune which I figured out too late). The enemy variation is also quite low and they are reused all the time. Now onto the nitty gritty, that is, the caveat mentioned at the beginning: as many other reviews say, the elephant in the room in this game is the bizarre enemy placement. I don't know what the 14 developers of this otherwise quite talented indie software house were thinking, when they decided to spam/duplicate/quadruple some of the enemies, and what's even worse, to place them in some enclosed areas where you are forced to defeat them all. The game is not too hard otherwise, but some of these "arenas" are very frustrating, and considering the issues with the progression system mentioned earlier, they are not rewarding either - at the opposite you will end up losing your exp multiplier. So, in conclusion: I had fun with this game, for a good 80% - 90% of the time. The remaining 10% was so bad at times that I had to keep playing stubbornly instead of giving up and probably leave a negative review - as many did it seems. It's a pity really, because I played many soulslikes, including indie and free ones, and these developers are clearly talented and got most of the stuff right, but shot themselves in the foot with that bizarre enemy placement decision. I feel that otherwise It could have been a product on the same level and commercial success of say Steel Rising or The Surge. Hopefully they will give another shot to the genre and do a sequel - I would be interested and I'm following these devs.
It looks like a decent soulslike with a fitting atmosphere and visual ideas but the gameplay just isn't great. Combat feels clunky, movement feels stiff and too many fights feel awkward instead of satisfying. The fight against the controls and the overall jank was harder than the enemies themselves. What makes it worse is that the game never really gives you that "one more try" feeling. Everytime I died I wasn't motivated to improve, I was mostly annoyed because of enemy placement and the unpolished gameplay. The whole experience comes across like a game with decent ideas but not enough polishment to make them actually work. There's maybe an audience that can still feel enjoyment but it never really clicked for me. The game has style but not enough substance where it matters.
It was a decent enough, but clunky experience until the first boss fight. I don't know what the developers were thinking, but apparently the only realistic way to beat the first boss is to stay still and directly in front of the enemy and just riposte the same three attacks the enemy does in an infite loop. Sure you can move around and then riposte the attacks that actually become more varied if you move around, but why bother if you can just stand still and get through easier. I have no idea if the other boss fights are as bad, but this was just too much for me. There's a reason the vast majority of souls-like games, and especially the good ones, don't force you to riposte the boss attacks to beat them. Not everybody wants to do that.
No.
better luck next time
It's so incredible bland and uninspired and relies almost a 100% on parry and 'stance'-bar criticals, otherwise you deal barely any damage.
