About
Story
Step into a tale of parallel universes...
Iris was born in World DE-1, a world that mirrors Earth in the 2000s. With her birth, a series of tragic loops was set in motion, which were gradually unraveled by the efforts of Arata Mizunashi and his team.
With her goodwill restored, Iris created a copy of World DE-1 named World DE-1.5. Here, feuds gave way to friendship, each person a perfect cog in a perfect world. But a new crisis threatens the peace...
A mysterious man has entered the fray, and he leads a group of people who look identical to the world's former heroes. Our new hero, Sayaka Hiwatari, confronts the rising chaos, where friends and foes seem impossible to distinguish.
And so the battle with another world enters a new phase...

Once the boss is defeated, it's time to save your friend and try to make it out of the Strain Area alive, your new companion in tow.

I will start with saying: Do not, absolutely do not, play this if you haven't experienced both DERQ and DERQ2's true ends. It is heavily tied into the story, and this is not like some neptunia game where they just conveniently forget everything, every character development that happened. it's a real and fluid and ongoing story, and this is the thirdish game, but it's a bit of a side story. (Also stop before the story section of this review if you haven't experienced those true ends yet) Now, onto the game itself: it was a bug ridden, nightmarish mess...before it was released on Steam. This is the only release of Code Z that was actually good on release. For once, the PC port was the good one. Most anything that was a problem with it before it hit Steam, is a thing of the past. Getting the true end is much much easier. That out of the way, the gameplay is like the "Mystery dungeon" series (aka Shiren the Wanderer). Everything is RNG, the drops, the enemies, the maps themselves. This can be a good and a bad thing. I've had nightmarish rolls where the Glitch girls appear every single floor and I find myself drowned by the oppressive attacks. But then I had a roll one time where I only saw them very rarely, and the exits just kept on being close (which actually happened my second run of the final dungeon). As something of this genre, it felt mostly fine to me. I got a little in despair when dealing with the second to last chapter, but after the 4th run, I finally pulled through. How the game works, is it's a turn-based system, but not like a traditional JRPG. You're on a grid, and every action (including movement) allows the enmies to act. If you don't act/move (unless you're under certain status effects) the enemies do not act. So, you get plenty of time to think through things, and if you have enough sanity, you can even scan around the current room you're in (but you cannot do this in hallways). It's not an action game, even if it might appear to be that, so hopefully that helps make the experience less stressful. The gameplay can get frustrating, but that really is the genre for the most part. STORY Moving forward to things like the story: I felt it was a good story, but possibly not the best way to present it. Sayaka, the main character, could have been handled a little better, but where the game really shines in how it handles the links to the other games. There's one thing I found disappointing, but overall this is an amazing way to handle soemthing for fans of this series. Just really pay attention to things. Everything makes a lot of sense, and it's built up to nicely. Even things that seem kind of random, end up making sense when you know the whole story. I'm really excited for DERQ 3 too. it sets up for that very nicely. But I can't really say more without spoiling something. Just, this is defintiely something that should be played for anyone who wants to be ready for DERQ 3. Death ends started off good, but then got pretty lazy. I really do hope DERQ 3 they improve upon the level of the death ends in 2, rather than another lackluster text swap style. Also, them only being related to dying to monsters, versus being story related, was a real poor decision. Ideally, they could have had both, and the monster death ends could have been the lesser effort, but such was not the case. They can do much better than this. Still, a few were really good. Just really hoping DERQ 3 does a more story based version. The graphics are about what you'd expect out of this style of game. not great compared to the previous games, but it's okay, I mean, 90% of hte time you're just watching Sayaka/monsters anyway, so it would have felt like a waste if the other characters had quality models and you barely saw them. Which brings me to my second really big problem with this game: You can only play as Sayaka. They really really need to not do this again. Still, I really did enjoy myself overall, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed DERQ 1 and DERQ 2. But I will probably not jump on another side game if it were done in this style, without some real research. I would especially be disappointed if they do DERQ 3 like this. Also, I need "MAI-CHAN!" dakishimete against Mai's tsundere wishes. this game had a serious low supply of that...
This is the 28th IF game I've played, and this might be the worst game they have put out. Both the gameplay and story independently suck: 1. Gameplay - At first, the simultaneous turn-based system functions just fine, because it's so simple that there's not much to mess up. As long as it keeps humming along and doesn't overstay its welcome, then it's functional, albeit kind of boring/one-note. Then we get to the problem: the main collectable in the game (and how you progress the skill tree) is bad endings, which are all acquired by dying. "Death ends". This starts off tedious enough when you have to die to each enemy 3 times, but it gets to a whole new level when dungeons get to 20, 30, or even 40 floors. Why? Because you separately have to die to the boss, let your escort die after the boss, AND die at the same time as your escort after the boss. And each of them require you to redo the entire randomized dungeon AGAIN FROM THE START. 3 TIMES. You might argue "Oh but you don't HAVE to get those death ends!" This is supposed to be the primary character progression system, where you'll find most of the CG's, and THE NAME OF THE GAME IS "DEATH END". If I don't try to find and watch the Death Ends, what are we even doing here? 2. Story - How well do you remember every major/minor character and plot twist of the 1st game from 2019? How familiar are you with the content exclusive to the $2 extra character DLC? How about the exclusive-to-New-Game+ scenes from the 2nd game? If not, GOOD LUCK. All of that is required background knowledge, where it is ASSUMED that you played all of that IMMEDIATELY before jumping onto this. I practically had to leave the wiki open on the other monitor to understand ANYTHING that was happening, and it wasn't worth it. I understand that the devs all know this lore front-to-back and want to make something they themselves enjoy, but what about everyone you expect to BUY this? They're kind of important too, right? What I just played is a death end for the series.
Great horror game, it REALLY makes you feel like you're losing sanity. man that "ghost" or "wraith" is horrifying as heck I always buy Death end request games on day 1, such a good time Still didn't complete the game, enjoying it slowly I love it so far, but there are things that are annoying: -some dungeons are super long and it's annoying. -game sometimes automatically save, so the game might auto save itself in times you DON'T WANT it to. -the inventory space is so small. -in dungeons, some monsters can destroy random items in your inventory per attack. The story is so good, especially the first 3 chapters are pure psychological horror If they make another sequel in the future, I'll 100% buy it on day 1
I really liked the game but mostly plot-like, too many revelations and seeing the characters from both previous games, even the faces of some characters without a previously established appearance was one of my favorite things, plus they confirmed the developing of the next game in an exciting ending. The gameplay, saving system and death ends could've been better, though.
